What is the poem “Mayon” by Kristian Sendon Cordero Camarines Sur about?

The Imagery was used in the poem when there are words that creates a pictures on our minds that
have deeper meanings or symbolizes other things. The Theme of the poem is about love and
sacrifice.

What does the first stanza of the poem “Mayon” mean?

The first stanza of the poem showcases the death of Magayon as the cause of birth of the volcano
as if it is like the old saying that “kapag may pumanaw, mayroon ding bagong isisilang” but in
this scenario, the reason why the persona used the image of a graveyard it is because maybe the
graveyard is connected with the volcano most probably when the volcano erupt and many people
who lives down the said volcano may be affected or be in danger because of its eruption that will
cause to the local’s death.

What makes the poem “Mayon” A sample of 21st Cen lit?


It makes the poem “Mayon” as a sample of 21st Century literature because the poem is still
happening in contemporary time where the lovers is sacrificing their love for each other for the
sake of what they think is the right thing to do which is realistic and we can relate. Also, the
author still lives in the present time.

The persona described the lava flowing down from the Mayon looks like liquefied poop or
human waste. The unnamed poet or the “Makata” interprets that the Mayon looks like an old
person who chews areca nut or a betel nut. The poets used light poetry or verses that is humorous
or puns.

The author used a security guard as the final image of persona because it symbolizes the author
itself. The author as a persona because he has a character on the poem and that is the security
guard. The poem implies on how the security personnel are viewed by the author as the security
guard, protects the poem so that it will not be lost or in the other word, the legend will not gonna
die or will be washed away from our literature. It is also because the author knows about the
hidden message of the poem and he reveals the message to us. He just let us in to read the poem
and analyze it by ourselves. He made us guess and let us come up with our own ideas on what is
the message that was hidden on the poem.
What is in a POEM?

A poem requires the use of an image or sense of impressions which may be visual, auditory,
olfactory, gustatory or tactile. The presence of figurative language such as simile, metaphor,
personification, hyperbole and metonymy should be present.

IMAGE - a word or phrase in a literary text that appeals directly to the reader's taste, touch,
hearing, sight, or smell. An image is thus any vivid or picturesque phrase that evokes a particular
sensation in the reader's mind.

METER - is a stressed and unstressed syllabic pattern in a verse, or within the lines of a poem.
Stressed syllables tend to be longer, and unstressed shorter. In simple language, meter is a poetic
device that serves as a linguistic sound pattern for the verses, as it gives poetry a rhythmical and
melodious sound.

ALLUSION is a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical,
cultural, literary or political significance. It does not describe in detail the person or thing to
which it refers.

What is THIRD WORLD GEOGRAPHY about?

The poem describe how the people suffered from the hand of the abusive government. It also
depicts the poverty, hunger and the utter agony of the people but it also talks about hope and how
people clung onto that hope waiting for a day that a miracle will happen.

What is the Dramatic Situation and the Persona?

Oppression has been seen in many instances in our history, and it is natural that our literature
reflects our engagement with this reality. In particular, some poets have used the subject
oppression as a starting point, creating dramatic situation that lead us to a greater understanding
of the issues at hand and how these affect our lives.

What about the Author?

Cirilo F. Bautista’s poem presents us with a situation that is allegorical or not literal but rather
representative of other ideas or personalities. He also uses personification, a figure of speech that
gives some nonhuman objects human qualities. This categorization broadly assigned countries to
group based on their social, political and economic status. Eventually, being labelled a “Third
World Country” that means the economic and power lack.

practiced by repeating a word that can be used in two different context.

A literary trope is the use of figurative language, via word, phrase or an image for artistic effect
such as using a figure speech.

The Haiyan Dead theme is about how the survivors of the typhoon Yolanda or Haiyan feel after
the storm has passed.

What is the interpretation of the poem “The Haiyan Dead”?

Haiyan dead refers to the victims of the Yolanda typhoon. This poem also refers how traumatic
the typhoon is . That night, when the typhoon happened, people are seeking for miracle, they are
hoping for someone to help them . This poem shows that this typhoon indeed made a huge
impact to their lives.

2. Ato is a kind sibling according to Dante’s mother. He always makes to appoint that he
has a strong bonding with his siblings.
3. Ato looks like Roland Dantes because of his huge lean body but he has no mustache. He
speaks in briefly in high-pitched tone.

1. During Uncle Ato’s burial, Nanang warned Ato to do not sweep the floor because if
he disobeys, he will have lice.
