Course Title: General Botany

Laboratory Exercises No. 8: Seeds Anatomy
Lesson: Identification of Corn and Soybean Seeds Part

Introduction

Seeds are ripened, fertilied ovules. It is composed of an outer covering called the
seed coat which is derived from the integuments: and embryo which is a small plant
within the seed and derived from the mitotic division of the zygote and endosperm which

is a storage tissue. Seed is the final stage in sexual reproduction in flowering plants.
Certain structural adaptations for dispersal are inherent to the fruits and seeds that
determine their agents of dispersal.

Learning outcomes:
At the end of this exercise the student should be able to:

1. Identify parts of monocot and dicot seeds;

2. Distinguish between a monocot seed and a dicot seed.

EXERCISE 8: IDENTIFICATION OF SEEDS PART

In this exercise, you are going to identify and label the parts of monocot and dicot
seeds. You will also be determining how to distinguish between the two. By
experimenting, you will distinguish which group has the entire seed being alive or just

the embryo being alive. Corn is typical of the largest family of monocots (Grass family).
Soybeans are typical of broadleaf species and especially the legume family.

1. Observe the external features of a corn and monggo seed under the
stereomicroscope and/or magniying glass. Draw and label the external
structures.

2. Remove the seed coat and cut the corn and monggo seeds into half to
expose the internal structures. Draw and label the internal structures.

3. The following links will give you some information about the parts of the fruits.
Diligently view some of the video clips and slides and take notes of some
important facts about the parts of the fruits.

II. Procedure:
You will work alone in this activity and prepare all the materials that you
will need for this activity.

1. Obtain 2 Petri dish or glass jar

2. Obtain 10 pre-soaked corn seeds and 10-pre-soaked mongo seeds
3. Obtain a razor blade, and cut the corn and mongo seed laying the
embryo side up. Place in a glass jar or dish
4. Cover halved corn and mongo seeds in the dish or glass jar with water

5. Place the dish or glass jar in a designated area for further reference
6. Now obtain 3 pre-soaked water mongo seeds
7. Take one seed and determine if it a monocot or a dicot
8. Take mongo seed and carefully peel off seed coat and label
9. Split seed in half as it wants to naturally, and label seed parts
10. After 30-45 minutes, go back to the dish or glass jar with corn and
observe what has occurred to the cut surface of the corn seed
11. Identify and label the parts of the corn seed
