COMMISSION ON LITURGY AND POPULAR
RELIGIOSITY
In Advent, the use of the organ and other musical instruments should be marked by a
moderation suited to the character of this time of year, without expressing in anticipation
the full joy.
For the succeeding Sundays, the candles are lit without ceremonies before the beginning
of each Mass.
During Advent, the floral decoration of the altar should be marked by a moderation suited
to the character of this time of year, without expressing the full joy of the Nativity of the
Lord. (GIRM, n. 305)
The Sundays of Advent take precedence over any other celebration. Masses for the dead
are not permitted, including Funeral Masses. In case there is genuine need for a funeral
Mass, the texts and prayers to be used must be for Advent.
Misa de Aguinaldo (also Misa de Gallo or Simbang Gabi) is a form of solemn votive Masses held
at dawn for nine consecutive days before Christmas in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
1.1 At these Masses, the Gloria is sung, even on the Third and Fourth Sundays of
Advent, white vestments are used, the Church and sanctuary are festively decorated,
and approved musical instruments are played. If any of these days fall on Sunday,
the Mass formularies and readings are those of Sunday. (The Roman Missal, English
translation according to the third typical edition. For use in the Diocese of the Philippines,
p. 1268)
1.2 At other Masses not intended as the Misa de Aguinaldo, the liturgical norms for Advent
prevail: violet vestments are used and the Gloria is not said nor sung.
It is to be noted that since the Aguinaldo Masses are not categorized as a Solemnity, Mass
formularies and liturgical texts are for the current day, and not for the following day or
“anticipated” unless it falls on Saturday evening.
The terms Aguinaldo Mass, “Simbang Gabi” or “Misa de Gallo” are interchangeable.
Since the Aguinaldo Masses fall within the Advent Season, Christmas hymns are out of
place. However, by reason of Filipino sentimentality, they herald the Christmas spirit
among the faithful.
The Aguinaldo Masses fall within the season of Advent. In keeping with the sobriety of this
period, Christmas decorations must be kept in moderation, and must constantly observe
the principle of noble simplicity.
4.1 The most appropriate decoration aside from the Christmas crèche is the parol, or traditional
Filipino Christmas lantern.
4.2 Christmas trees are more appropriately placed outside of the church.
4.3 The Christmas crèche (Belen) and its images may be displayed gradually within the duration
of the Aguinaldo Masses. There is no need, however, for any ceremonial actions attached to it.
(e.g., bringing in procession during the presentation of the gifts).
