WEEKLY LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS

Science 6, Quarter 2, Week 2

Human Body System
Learning Objective:

Explain how the organs of each organ system work together.

(MELC- CODE: S6LT-IIa-b-1)

Unpacked Competencies:
 Explain how the organs of the respiratory system work together.
 Explain how the organs of the circulatory system work together.
 Trace the path of blood as it flows from the heart to the different parts
of the body and back using a model.
 Describe how the organs of the human body work together to form the
nervous system.
 Make a chart showing healthful habits that promote proper
functioning of the nervous system.

Key Concepts
(Science 6 LM pp. 62-85)

Functionally related organs often cooperate to form whole organ

systems. These systems work together in order to perform life processes for
day to day survival. It works all throughout for when it stops, life will not be
defined.

Respiratory System

Organs and other structures of the respiratory system include the nasal
passages, lungs, and a long tube called the trachea, which carries air between
the nasal passages and lungs. The main function of the respiratory system is
to deliver oxygen to the blood and remove carbon dioxide from the body. Gases
are exchanged between the lungs and blood across the walls of capillaries
lining tiny air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs.

 Nose is the outer part of the respiratory system. Nostrils are the two
openings which lead to the nasal cavity.

 Nasal cavity is moist because of mucus. Tiny hairs also line this cavity
which filter dust and dirt that may come with the air upon inhaling.

 Pharynx is connected to both nose, mouth and acts as passageway for
both air and food.

 Larynx is also called the voice box. It is found at the lower end of the
pharynx.

 Trachea or windpipe is a tube at the bottom of the larynx. It is lined with

mucus that helps prevent dust particles and other things from entering
the lungs.

 Lungs are enclosed in a coating called pleura which allows the lungs to
slide freely as they expand and contract when you breathe.

Circulatory System

The Circulatory System is responsible for distributing nutrients, oxygen

and other essential subastances to all parts of the body. It also removes carbon
dioxide and other waste materials from the different parts of the body.

 Heart is a hollow muscular organ located in the chest, between

the lungs. It is about the size of a clenched fist. It is called the
pumping station of the body.

 Blood vessels are tubes that serve as passageways for blood to

reach the different parts of the body.

 Arteries, veins and capillaries are the blood vessels.

 Blood delivers vital nutrients and oxygen to different parts of the

body. It also carries away waste products like carbon dioxide and
excess water for excretion. It also has whiteblood cells that
protect the body from diseases and infection.

 Red blood cells (RBCs), White blood cell (WBCs) and Platelets
(thrombocytes) are the solid part of the blood while plasma of the
blood is the liquid part.

Path of Circulation

The blood that leaves the heart is rich in oxygen. This oxygenated
blood passes through the aorta and travels throughout the body via
the arteries to the capillaries. In the capillaries, exchange of nutrients

and gases occur. Oxygen is absorbed by the body parts while carbon
dioxide is released into the blood. The deoxygenated blood then
travels through the veins and enters the right side of the heart.

The deoxygenated blood flows from the right side of the heart to go
to the lungs. There, another exchange of gases happen as oxygen is
received by the blood and carbon dioxide is released. The oxygenated
blood then returns to the left side of the heart. The blood then leaves
the heart to travel to the different parts of the body.

Nervous System

The nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord, which make up
the central nervous system, and nerves that run throughout the rest of the
body, which make up the peripheral nervous system. The nervous system
controls both voluntary and involuntary responses of the human organism
and also detects and processes sensory information.

 Brain is protected by the skull and layers of tissues called meninges.

 Cerebrum is the largest structure in the brain. It is responsible for
controlling speech, memory, emotions, intelligence, reasoning, thinking,
and sensations.
 The cerebellum is the second largest part of the brain. It is specifically
responsible for balance, posture and movement coordination.
 Medulla oblongata or brain stem is found at the base of the brain and
connects the brain to the spinal cord. It controls basic life functions
such as heartbeat, breathing, and digestion.
 The spinal cord is very important, as it is the extension of the brain. Its
main function is to serve as a pathway of messages to and from the
brain.
 Nerve cells or neurons are the basic units of the nervous system. Their
main function is to carry and collect messages, or nerve impulses from
the different parts of the body through the sensory nerves. Motor nerves
perform the desired actions interpreted by the brain which is connected
by a connector nerve.

Activity 2B: My Heart Beats

What You Need: Stopwatch (timer in the cellphone/count 1-60), ballpen

What to do:

1. Ask your parents to help you perform the activity.

2. While at rest, let your mother/guardian get your pulse rate by placing
the finger ( the index or the middle finger) on your wrist or on your
neck.
3. Using the timer (timer in the cellphone/count 1-60) , let your
mother/guardian count your heartbeat for one minute.
4. Record your heartbeat in the table below.
5. Ask you mother/father/other members in the family do the same.(only
one is required)

6. Then, record the data.
7. After recording, jog in place for 2 minutes. (if you are asthmatic or
having heart issues DO NOT perform the activity. Ask other healthy
member of the family to do it for you).
8. After doing the exercise, let your mother count your heartbeat by doing
step number 2 for 1 minute.
9. Record the data in the table.
10. Answer the questions that follow.

Activity 3: My Blood Circulation:

Direction: Study the model and fill in the appropriate word in the
paragraph.

The oxygenated blood from the heart passes

leaves the heart to travel to the different parts of
the body happens once more.

Activity 4A: My Nervous System

Directions: Read and answer the questions that follow.

The nervous system, known as the master control, is the communication

network of the body. It controls everything we do. It is made up of the brain.
spinal cord, and nerves. The brain serves as the command center. It receives
information by and interprets then. It sends messages back to the part of the
body that has received the stimulus (a factor capable of producing activity in
an organism). The spinal cord is the main nerve of the nervous system that
extends down the back. It is enclosed in the vertebral column (a series of small
bones.), or spine. The spinal cord is the main pathway for messages that are
received and sent by the brain. Bundles of nerves fibers are called nerves.
Nerves are the carrier of message inside the body. They carry messages from
the brain to other parts of the body.
