Explain how the organs of the circulatory system work together.
Trace the path of blood as it flows from the heart to the different parts
of the body and back using a model.

functioning of the nervous system.
Key Concepts
(Science 6 LM pp. 62-85)
Respiratory System
Organs and other structures of the respiratory system include the nasal
passages, lungs, and a long tube called the trachea, which carries air between
the nasal passages and lungs. The main function of the respiratory system is
to deliver oxygen to the blood and remove carbon dioxide from the body. Gases
are exchanged between the lungs and blood across the walls of capillaries
lining tiny air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs.
Nose is the outer part of the respiratory system. Nostrils are the two
openings which lead to the nasal cavity.
Nasal cavity is moist because of mucus. Tiny hairs also line this cavity
which filter dust and dirt that may come with the air upon inhaling.

Pharynx is connected to both nose, mouth and acts as passageway for
both air and food.
Larynx is also called the voice box. It is found at the lower end of the
pharynx.
Lungs are enclosed in a coating called pleura which allows the lungs to
slide freely as they expand and contract when you breathe.
Circulatory System
Red blood cells (RBCs), White blood cell (WBCs) and Platelets
(thrombocytes) are the solid part of the blood while plasma of the
blood is the liquid part.
Path of Circulation
The blood that leaves the heart is rich in oxygen. This oxygenated
blood passes through the aorta and travels throughout the body via
the arteries to the capillaries. In the capillaries, exchange of nutrients

and gases occur. Oxygen is absorbed by the body parts while carbon
dioxide is released into the blood. The deoxygenated blood then
travels through the veins and enters the right side of the heart.
The deoxygenated blood flows from the right side of the heart to go
to the lungs. There, another exchange of gases happen as oxygen is
received by the blood and carbon dioxide is released. The oxygenated
blood then returns to the left side of the heart. The blood then leaves
the heart to travel to the different parts of the body.
Nervous System
The nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord, which make up
the central nervous system, and nerves that run throughout the rest of the
body, which make up the peripheral nervous system. The nervous system
controls both voluntary and involuntary responses of the human organism
and also detects and processes sensory information.
