1.0 PURPOSE
1.1 The purpose of this document is to provide guidelines for generating dynamic graphics for
Distributed Control System and other computerised control systems.
2.0 SCOPE
2.1 This document defines basic guidelines for deciding on graphic page layout, colour scheme,
modifier conditions and to decide the approximate number of dynamic graphic pages required
for a plant when Distributed Control System is used for plant control. This guideline shall
also be applicable for any other computer control system consisting of CRT's as the main man
machine interface.
2.2 For specific job requirements, the job philosophy for graphics as prepared by `Operation
department' must be referred in addition to this document.
2.3 In addition to the dynamic graphics, additional static graphic pages as mentioned below shall
also be included.
a) Title Sheet, indicating plant name, Unit, name, capacity, client's name, Licensors name,
Consultant's name etc.
b) Index -Index of graphic sheets giving graphic title with page number.
c) Block flow diagram.
d) Static graphics
e) Shutdown logic operator guidance.
f) Messages for operator guidance indicating messages for operator for plant startup and
shutdown.
g) Any other special job related static graphic.
2.4 All the graphic pages shall be arranged in the sequence shown in para 2.3 except that dynamic
graphics shall be arranged after Block Flow Diagram.
2.5 Graphic sheets must be sent to Operation department, client and licensor for comments.
2.6 The special features related to selected system must be included after the finalisation of
Control System vendor.

4.0 DETAILS
4.1 Graphic Page layout and presentation
4.1.1 Only main lines and lines having instruments need to be shown in the graphic. Bypass,
equalising and other auxiliary process lines may be omitted.
4.1.2 Utility lines having no instruments shall be omitted. For example, for cooling water inlet
and outlet to exchanger, show only short inlet and outlet lines.

4.1.3 Standby equipment may not be shown on the graphic pages. However, the main equipment
shown shall specify combined details of main and stand-by equipment.
4.1.4 The shape of the equipments shall be as per ISA-S5.5 standard. However proportionate
dimensions must be maintained as per P&IDs.
4.1.5 Number of equipment shall preferably be limited to the following for a neat and clear
presentation:
Number of Main Equipments : 1 Number like columns or a compressor or reactor.
Number of auxiliary equipments :
Exchanger (Reboiler,Condenser) : 2 Numbers
Number of pumps : 2 Numbers
Number of close loops : 4 Numbers
Number of Open loops : 10 Numbers
Or a suitable equivalent mixture of open and close-loops.
4.1.6 Although in practice a much larger information can be displayed on each graphic page, but
the graphic page becomes quite congested with the addition of more and more information.
4.1.7 The information on the graphic page including all modifier conditions shall be less than or
equal to around 28 numbers.
4.2 Data Presentation
4.2.1 Equipment numbers and description shall be written inside the equipment. Long descriptions
shall be avoided.
4.2.2 Flow direction to be marked only at the page inlet and outlet lines, flow into the equipments,
meeting point of lines etc. All other places arrows must be avoided.
4.2.3 Abbreviated tag numbers shall be specified and shall be displayed, only once for a loop. No
separate tag number shall be required for control valve or transmitter associated with the loop.
However, if a control valve associated with controller is also used for shutdown, tag number
need not be specified.
Tag number for control valve designation i.e. A or B must be specified for split-range control
valves.
4.2.4 Process Value (PV) and Set Value (SV) values shall be specified for display for each control-
loop. Manipulated variable shall not be required except for split range controllers.
4.2.5 Engineering units shall be specified for display only for process variables.
4.2.6 Engineering units for pressure and temperature shall be displayed only if these are different
from KG/CM2g and oC respectively. Engineering units must be specified for all flow
measurements.
4.2.7 Alarm points shall not be identified with Tag numbers.
4.2.8 Short description must be specified for all inlet and outlet lines on a page.
4.3 Colour scheme for graphic views shall be as per Appendix-1.
