Visual analysis on Long term Effects of SUFFERING

$uicideboy$ released their album called “Long Term Effects of SUFFERING” via G*59

RECORD$ on August 13, 2021. $uicideboy$ is an American duo of rappers from New Orleans,

Louisiana. They were founded in 2013 by music artists Ruby Da Cherry and Scrim. The type of

music this duo makes doesn’t have a label but some of the G*59 family members call it

“horrorcore” music. The duo owns the G*59 label and have over 5.3 billion streams. After

listening to “Long Term Effects of SUFFERING” you can get a better understanding of why they

chose this cover. From a first glance at the album, your eyes shift to the lady on fire. You look

more and see a guy with his head down, another guy vomiting blood out and people below the

house on fire. The cover demonstrates how the inside of the mind looks like using imagery found

on the cover and they show everyday struggles they go through in every room.

First of all, the main attraction is the lady with her mouth open who’s surrounded by red,

yellow and orange colors. The Colors that surround her indicate that she’s getting indulged in

flames. Typically when you look at these colors you think of danger, anger and hostility. If you

look closer at her, her skin tone is fading into a gray shade. From how the color scheme is

changing, it’s showing us how the flames around her are slowly burning her. Fire means death,

so this cover might show the viewer how she’s slowly dying. In addition to death, you can see

the lady has her mouth open which shows that she’s trying to catch her breath. The album cover
2

used fire to empathize how she’s drowning and choking in her own surroundings and how she

can’t escape it which can lead to death.

In the room upstairs you can see a man with his head down. The contrast of the man's

body language can tell you that he’s going through an emotional moment. The main color in the

room he’s in is purple. Even though the man is going through a hard time, the color of the wall

indicates that there’s a possible chance of deepening our understanding of our innermost

thoughts and how there’s still hope of picking yourself up from a dark place. There’s a table next

to him with a bottle on it and from this you can indicate that he’s drinking his sorrows away. The

man is just wearing pants with no shirt revealing his tattoos that cover his arms. The tattoos

correlate to the real life look of one of the artists, which indicates that that’s him portraying his

struggles on the album cover.

As you can see in the other room there’s a man with blonde hair throwing up. This man

correlates as well with the other artist because they have the same hair color. The red in the

vomit indicates how the man is slowly dying. The contrast of the man's clothing shows us how

miserable he is. Darkness presents sadness, death and misfortune. He’s presenting his eating

disorder in the drawing. It’s an eye-catching part of the picture because you don’t typically see

vomit that’s red. Furthermore, the vomit contains a unique type of struggle. You can see he’s

holding on to the toilet seat for help because there’s no one around him to help him out. The

main purpose of adding the gray wall is to add a dark setting. Gray relays negative connotations,

depression and loss of hope. Which can represent how his surroundings affect him mentally.

There’s five people, potentially fans of the duo, below the house which are surrounded by

warm colors. The colors that are surrounding the people can indicate that they could be suffering

or that they could possibly be in hell. Red, orange, and yellow flames portray comfort or
3

feelings of anger and hostility. Fans tend to look up to this duo because they make music of their

everyday struggles that many people can relate to. They could be using the potential fans in the

cover as a way to portray that they're praising them or asking them for help by putting their

hands up in the air. Near the fans, there are fragile branches holding up the house. Furthermore,

the branches represent the stability of the house and how in any moment it can fall apart on top

of the fans. This represents how if $uicideboy$ give up, they could affect the fans mental health

as well since they look up to them.

In conclusion, the album covers from the duo always have a deeper message that is

portrayed with their music. In this case, the album cover tells a lot about what struggles the

artists are going through; not only are they using drawings to show their struggles but they’ve

added themselves to it which they don’t mainly do. Their main goal is to not give out as much

information on the album cover as possible but Long Term Effects of SUFFERING is a great

example of showing their emotions to fans. This cover is a great example that visual images can

tell a lot more than an album cover that has words scattered all over the place.
