Ⅰ. Application
Traveling block is an element for hoisting system of drilling rig. It is used with
crown block, hook and elevator link. It is mainly used in hoisting, tripping in &
tripping out drill stem pole, changing bit and casing during drilling.

Ⅱ. Specifications

1. Model YC 315
2. Max. Static load rating 3150 KN (350 US tons)
3. Numbers of sheaves 6
4. O.D of the sheaves ф1270mm (50”)
5. O.D of wire line ф35mm (1-3/8”)
6. Overall dimensions (Length x Width x Height) 2690 X 1350X 800(mm)
106 X 53 X 31(in)
7. Theoretical Weight 5500kg (121251bs)

Ⅲ. Structure

YC 315 traveling block (see drawing 1) contains 8 major parts: cap, sheaves,
shaft of the sheaves, left housing assembly, right housing assembly, side guard plate,
clevis and clevis pin.
Cap is connected at the top of housing assembly through cap pin, a hole for hoist
could be used for traveling block hoisting wholly.
The sheaves are supported on the shaft with double-row conical roller bearings
(see drawing 2). Each bearing has its lubrication channel and can be individually
lubricated with grease fittings located at the ends of the shaft. The sheave grooves are
machined according to API specification .In order to resist wearing maximum, the
grooves process surface heat treatment.
Side guard plates, which fixed traveling block could resist mud enter into the
inner part of traveling block. Side guard plates are connected with side plate through

1
guard pin and plug.
In order to prevent wire line to jumping from groove, lower plate guard is welded
on the housing assembly to guarantee safety of wire rope.
The clevis is securely fastened to the two housing assemblies with the two-clevis
pins. Contact surface diameter of the connected between clevis and hook is in
accordance with API specification. One segment of each clevis pin is fixed with
slotted nut and cotter pin, the hook can be removed from and reattached to the
traveling block with either of clevis pins or both removed.

Ⅳ. Operating and Maintenance

During running, the traveling block shall be checked frequently the following items.
1. Prior to or during running, all the bearings shall be fully filled with grease.
Bearings should be filled up ZL-3 lithium grease two times a week.
2. Bearings shall run smoothly and noiselessly. Temperature rise of bearings could not
be more than 40℃, the maximum temperature could not be more than 70℃.
3. Excessive noise from the bearings and irregular vibration of the sheaves can be
attributed to the increased clearance of the double – row conical – roller bearings.
Improper lubrication for bearings will result in increased wearing. The service life of
the wire rope will be reduced owing to irregular vibration of the sheaves. Any worn
bearing shall be replaced in time to avoid accidents.
4. Check rotating of sheaves for flexible and non-retardation.
5. If the guards become deformed and impair the sheave’s running, they shall be
rectified as required.
6. In case of the sheaves with damaged rims, the wire ropes are liable to run out of the
grooves or the wire rope will be damaged due to its violent skipping. Such sheaves
shall be replaced promptly.
7. The sheave grooves with corrugated surface will blunt the wire ropes severely on
account of frequent starting or stopping of the sheaves and result in their grave
wearing. In such a case, the sheave grooves shall be re-machined or the sheaves

replaced. For replacing, it is advisable to make sure that the new sheaves of certain
material can bear the predetermined load and possess adequate hardness.
8. In consideration of the great effect of contour and size of the sheave grooves on the
service life of the wire rope, shall be calibrated at regular intervals with special gauge.
Production and application of the gauge are in the accordance with API Spec 8A.

Ⅴ.Transportation and packaging

1. The traveling block is nude transportation integrality. Hole for hoist of hanging
beam is lifted by crane when lifting, drag the traveling block on the ground is
forbidden.
2. Clean the surface when storage and paint the grease in the sheave rope groove.
3. Traveling block should be storage in a warehouse with dry, ventilate and
non-corrosion, solarization and raindrop are forbidden.
