Date: 02/17/22
Subject / grade level: Language Arts/ 5th grade
Materials: The One and Only Ivan

State Standards:
RL.5.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

RL.5.2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from

details in the text, including how characters in a story or
drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem
reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.

RL.5.3 Compare and contrast two or more characters,

setti ngs, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific
details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).

Lesson objective(s):
• Students will be able to identify the main characters of the book and what the author is trying to teach is through her novel.
• I want the students to identify the importance of knowing what is most important to them. I want them to learn that being free is
the best gift they can have.

Differentiation/Accommodation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:

• For Student John Doe who struggles to read we will pair him in a group where he can be comfortable reading but also get the
opportunity to listen to other strong readers who can answer any questions.
• Instead of having John read out loud to the class I will ask him questions to still include him in the group discussions.

ENGAGEMENT
• I want the students to put themselves in place of one of the main characters and see what life would be like through their eyes.
• The students will be able to tell us why it is important to understand how others feel and react.

EXPLORATION
• The students will be doing role play activities as the characters to show what they have learned about each one.
• I want them to see what it is like to be Ivan or the other characters and learn how to express what is on their minds in a way that will
help others know how they are feeling.
• Students will be doing their own art projects through the eyes of Ivan.

EXPLANATION
• How would this story have changed if Julia wasn’t part of the Novel? What about ruby?
• What would have happened if Ivan hadn’t kept his promise with stella.
ELABORATION
• Through this story the students will be able to learn how to use other ways to express themselves and show who they really are.
• Vocabulary such as what it means to be free, abuse, sorrow and what it really means to be happy will be studied and analyzed.
• How is this knowledge applied in our daily lives? It will help them know how to stand up for what they believe in and take action
when it is appropriate to do so.

EVALUATION
• How will students demonstrate that they have achieved the lesson objective?
• This should be embedded throughout the lesson as well as at the end of the lesson
