Issues caused by ICT

Digital Divide E-waste

• “Digital divide” is an economic and social inequality with regard to access
to, use of, or impact of information and communication technologies.
Access to appropriate technological resources similar and improvements in
ICT education will helpful to overcome digital divide (Digital bridge).
• Electronic products such as computers, television, mobile phones worked using
electricity or powered by batteries have become non working after reaching the end of
their useful life are known as e-waste.
• Hundreds of different materials are used to make electronics and their components,
including heavy metals, gases, plastics and more.

• Stop using dangerous, hazardous materials
• Make eco-friendly products/ green computing

 Stealing / Phishing
• Phishing is the attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames,
passwords, and credit card details by using deceptive e-mails and websites.
(masquerading/ disguised as a trustworthy entity)
• To protect data or information against stealing or phishing:
oProtect your accounts by using multi-factor authentication
oSet the software to update automatically
oProtect your computer by using security software (setup firewall)
oDo not open suspicious emails and clicking on links of untrusted
senders.
oProtect your data by backing it up
Software piracy
• is the illegal distribution, selling, modifying or copying the software.
Copyright / Intellectual Property laws
• Intellectual property is the area of law that deals with protecting the rights
of those who create original works. Copyright refers to the legal right of
the owner of intellectual property. Intellectual Property law deals
with laws to protect and enforce rights of the creators and owners of
inventions, writing, music, designs and other works.

Licensed / unlicensed software

• A software license is a legal instrument governing the use or redistribution of
software.
• Two common categories for software under copyright law are proprietary
software and free and open source software (FOSS). License grants the licensee
specific rights to use, edit or redistribution of software.
• Unlicensed software outside the copyright protection is either public software or
software which is non-distributed, non-licensed and handled as internal resource
of an organization.

Plagiarism
• Plagiarism is the representation of someone else’s thoughts, ideas, expressions or
work and the representation as one's own original work
