Introduction

In the late 1600’s, the wars that raged across Europe that resulted in an increase in Sweden’s
weapons production. Hydropower was required in the manufacturing process, so in 1689, a
drilling works was established beside the water falls in Husqvarna, southern Sweden, where
many products are still produced today.

As the need for weapons declined, the company saw an opportunity to branch out by applying
precision engineering skills achieved from producing weapons, to a whole new set of other
products ranging from sewing machines, hunting weapons, wood stoves, mincing machines,
bicycles, motorcycles, gas stoves, microwave ovens and much more.

In 1918 Husqvarna acquired “Norrahammars Bruk,” adding two new products to the portfolio,
boilers and manual lawnmowers. In 1919, the company began manufacturing its own engines.

Husqvarna introduced its first motorized lawnmower for commercial use in 1947. In 1959, the first
homeowner model hits the market. It’s a busy period for Husqvarna; in the same year, the first
chainsaw was sold.

This manual will guide the reader through steps that will need to be taken to operate a Huskuvarna
push lawnmower. This manual will also talk about minor troubleshooting steps that can be taken
to possibly fix the mower.

You as the reader should go through these steps carefully and read a couple of times so you can
achieve the best possible result that you are looking for.

• The width of the cutting deck is 20 in wide.
• Minimum cutting height 1.45 inches high.
• Maximum cutting height 4.5 inches high.
3. This Lawnmower is self-propelled.
• Self-propelled is when you squeeze or push a lever and the mower will move on its
own.
• This mower is rear wheel drive.
• Maximum speed is 3 miles per hour.
4. This mower will come with a few essentials
• It will come with a Bagger.
• It will come with a Mulcher
• It will come with a Shoot.

5
1.2 Learning the Engine of the Lawnmower
Knowing a little bit about the lawn mowers engine will help out a great deal when you are
working with the lawnmower.

1. The engine of this Husqvarna push lawnmower is a W520i engine.

2. You must always make sure you have an adequate amount of Gasoline and oil in your
mower.
• The mower takes 87 octane E10 Gasoline
• The oil that the mower requires is Husqvarna 32-oz 4-Cycle SAE 30 Mower

1.3 Learning Other Functions of the Lawnmower

The Husqvarna push lawnmower has some features that can be very useful to everyone and
make the job so much easier.

1. The lawnmower is able to self-propel.

• The lawnmower will have a lever that you will hold
• When you hold this lever down the Lawnmower will begin to move forward.
2. There is a belt in the lawn mower.
• Once you hold the lever it will activate the belt and it will spin and that will move the
tires forward.

6
• The self-propel on this lawnmower is very useful and makes mowing large areas of
land and areas that are not completely flat so much easier to do.

Fig 1.3: Self-propel trigger.

3. The additional pieces to help with mowing tasks.

4. The Mulcher.
• The Mulcher keeps the cut grass underneath of the deck of the mower and continually
chops up the grass until it is in small pieces.
• The Mulcher should be inserted in the back of the mower.
• If you are putting the Mulcher in, you Must make sure your hand is off of the blade
control and the mower is not running.

Fig 1.4: The Mulcher.

5. The Shoot.
• The shoot throws grass that you have just cut off to the side.
• The Shoot is good for spreading all of the grass out.

7
Fig 1.5: The Shoot.

6. The Bagger
• The Bagger comes in very useful when the grass is a bit too high.
• When the mulcher or the shoot is in and the grass is too high it will bog down the
mower and you will be able to tell by the sound the mower is making that it is
struggling.
• When you hear the mower struggling, you should put the bagger on, so all the grass
goes into your bag and doesn't clog the mower.
• When you have your bagger on, and it gets full you will need to empty it into a large
trash bag.
• You will have to do this multiple times when you are mowing a lawn.

Chapter 2: Learning how to Operate your Lawnmower.
Learning how to operate your lawnmower is crucial and these following steps will help aid
you to get started in operating your lawnmower.

2.1. Getting your Lawnmower ready

1. Getting your lawnmower ready to run.

2. Make sure you have gas in your mower. (Refer to 1.2 to see the gas you need)
3. Look at the mower and see the important features that you will be utilizing.
• The Blade controls.
o The Blade control is one of the most important features on the entire
lawnmower.
o In order to start the lawn mower, the blade control lever needs to be held
down and remain to be held down throughout mowing whatever you want to
mow.
o Once you release the blade control the blade will stop spinning and the mower
will turn off.

• The Pull String.

o The pull string is located on the right side of the mower.
o Make sure you look for the pull string and properly identify it.

2.2. Starting the Lawnmower

1. As stated in 2.1 there will be a few steps that will need to be taken in order to start the
mower.
2. The Blade control must be held down for the mower to start.
• The blade control needs to be held down whenever you want the mower to run.
• When you want the mower to stop running and the blade to stop spinning you will
just let off the blade control and the mower will stop.

10
3. The Pull string starts the Lawnmower.
• The pull string is located on the right side of the lawnmower about waist high.
• The cord is wrapped around a spring-loaded hub.
• When you pull the pull string back the spring-loaded hub will engage with a flywheel.

Learning how to
Troubleshoot
problems with your
push lawnmower.

13
Chapter 3: Learning how to Trouble shoot your push Lawnmower
Sometimes your push Lawnmower will have some problems. There are some different things
you can look at and possibly fix on the lawnmower when you are having trouble. This chapter
will go over some simple solutions that you can do with no experience working with engines or
machines.

3.1. Learning about some problems that might arise

1. Gas: If you are trying to get your mower to start and it just won't the first thing you should
check is if your gas tank is full.
• To check and see if gas is in your mower, you will turn the lid on the top of the
mower and do a quick inspection.
• You will be checking to see if there is any gas in the mower.
2. If there is no gas in the mower, then the mower cannot start.
3. The Engine is a combustion engine.
4. When combustion occurs in the engine it forces the down the cylinder.
5. This action rotates the crank shaft which gets your blade to spin.

Fig 1.10: Gas can. Fig 1.11: Mower with gas lid on. Fig 1.12: Gas lid off.

1. Air Filter: You should always make sure your Air Filter is clean.
2. You can find the air filter on the left side of the mower on the engine.

14
3. The Air Filter is in a little black box with two tabs on it.
4. You should push down on these tabs.
5. Once you remove the protective hard plastic cover you will see the air filter.
6. If the Air Filter looks very dirty, then it should be replaced.
7. To replace the Air Filter, look to see how the dirty Air Filter is in place and put the new
Filter in the same way.
• The Air Filter is very important to make sure it is fairly clean.
• If you have a clean air Filter, then your mower will run better.
• If you have a dirty Air Filter, then dirt and debris could get into your engine.
• If dirt was to get into your engine, then that could compromise the engines ability to
run.

Fig 1.13: Mower filter cover on. Fig 1.14 Mower filter cover off and filter visible.

1. Major damage to Lawnmower: There can be certain situations where your mower could
be damaged.
2. There could be times where your mower has reached its last leg and is not sounding great
or having trouble starting
3. There are also other situations where you could have run over something that you did not
see.
4. If any of these situations happen, you should always assess the damage.
5. If you run something over and it does not sound good, you should turn the gas off.
6. The switch for this is on the right side of the mower.
• You want to turn off the gas so there will be no spill of gas
7. Once you turn the gas off you want to flip the lawn mower on its side.
8. When the Mower is on its side you want to feel the blade.
• You are checking for major dents or chips in the blade.
9. While you are looking at the blade you also want to check the center nut that is holding
the blade on.
10. You want to make sure that this nut is not loose at all.
11. If the nut is loose, then you should grab a torque wrench and get the corresponding bit for
the nut that is holding the blade on and tighten the nut until it is tight
15
3.2: Figuring out some possible solutions.

Solutions if there is no gas in your mower.

1. When you are looking to see if there is gas in your mower you should be able to tell right
away.
2. When you see that there is no gas in your lawnmower you will grab your gas can.
3. You will open the lid to the gas tank on the mower.
4. Put the nozzle of the gas can into the gas entrance of the mower
5. Pour gas until the tank is full
6. Once you see the gas rising up you should stop your pouring, so the gas does not spill out
of the tank and make a mess over everything.

Solutions if the oil needs to be changed

1. You should check your oil regularly.

2. You will find your oil on the left side of your mower on the engine.
3. You will twist the cap on the oil gage.
4. You will take the stick out.
5. You should have a paper towel ready.
6. Once you take out the stick you will wipe it on the paper towel.
7. Then you will put the oil stick back in and hold for a few seconds.
8. Once you have held it there for a few seconds take it out and see where the oil is on the
stick
9. There will be a mark on the oil stick that will tell you if you have a good amount of oil in
your engine.
10. If the oil comes in under the mark on the stick, then you know you must add some oil.
11. It is important to have enough oil in the engine.
12. The oil lubricants the engine and keeps everything running smoothly with no additional
stress to the engine.

16
Fig 1.15: Oil cap and stick in the mower. Fig 1.16 Checking oil.

Solutions if the blade is clogged with grass.

1. If you mowed the grass when it was still wet, then the chances that grass is clogged in
between the mower blade and the deck of the mower is very high.
2. You can tell right away when the mower is clogged with grass.
3. When you go to start up your mower you will not be able to pull the pull string back.
4. The pull string won't move because grass is clogged under the mower.
5. To fix this you will turn the gas off on the side of the mower.
6. Then you will flip the mower on its side.
7. Then you will use your hands on a scraper to unclog the grass.
8. Make sure there is no excess grass in your mower that can get clogged.
9. Once you get the grass cleared out of the way you will turn your mower back on its
wheels
10. You will turn the gas back on.
11. Now you will see if the mower starts with ease.

3.3: Learning how to do minor steps to fix your mower

Filter.
1. As stated in 3.1 you can change your air filter.
2. If you notice that your air filter is dirty, then it should be changed.
3. It is very easy to replace.
4. The only thing you have to do is take the old filter out.
5. Get a filter that is the same size.
6. Insert the new filter in the exact same way you took the old filter out.
7. Put the cover over the air filter.
8. Then that is it, the air filter is changed.

Fuel Stabilizer.

17
1. Fuel Stabilizer is something that can help your mower in the long run.
2. If you are having problems with your mower and don’t see any external damages, then it
might be a problem with your fuel.
3. Fuel Stabilizer will extend the life of the gas.
• Fuel Stabilizer will prevent future buildup
4. You will add the Stabilizer to your gas can.
5. A little bit of stabilizer goes a long way.
6. Adding Stabilizer will drastically improve the quality and life of the fuel you are putting
in the engine of your mower.

Mower Belt.

1. Sometimes the Belt can come lose.

2. When this belt comes lose then the mower will not move.
3. To check and see if the belt is lose you will flip the mower on its side.
4. The belt is behind the blade and is easily visible.
5. If you see that the belt has come off its wheel, then you can just slip it back on.
6. Your Mower Belt could completely break.
7. If it breaks, then you will have to get a new one.
8. The process is easy, you will do the same thing that you would do if it slipped off.
9. You just gently put it back on the wheels in the mower.
