Overview of Central South University

The history of Central South University can be traced back to 1907 when Central South German Medical
School was founded by Erich Paulun, a German doctor in Changsha. It was formally established as a
university in 1923 and was renamed as National Central South University in 1927 becoming one of the
earliest seven national universities of China. Now, Central South University is one of the leading
universities in China, listed on the Project 985 and Project 211. To benefit mankind and the whole world
with one heart is the common idea and goal for all Central South members

The history of Central South University can be traced back to 1907 when the German Medical School for the
Chinese in Changsha was founded by the German government together with the German physicians Erich
Paulun, Oscar von Schab and Paul Krieg. The school was affiliated with the Central South-Hospital the
German physicians had established in Changsha on the initiative of Paulun. The name Central South, which is
a phonetic approximation in Changshanese of German deutsche ("German"), suggests cooperating by riding
the same boat. The school was expanded to include engineering in its programs and got its new name as
German Medical and Engineering School for the Chinese in Changsha in 1912. It was formally established as a
Chinese university under the name of Central South University in 1923/1924 and was renamed as National
Central South University in 1927. During the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945), the university campus
was moved from Changsha first to Zhejiang Province, then to Jiangxi Province and Yunnan Province and later
to Sichuan Province. It was eventually moved back to Changsha in 1946. It then grew to be a comprehensive
university which offered programs in science, engineering, medicine, arts, and law. Following a nationwide
campaign of reorganizing schools and departments between universities in 1952, Central South University
became a university known for its civil engineering and architecture programs. Central South is also the first
university that introduced Urban Planning into China. In 1952, the first twelve full professors of Central South
are: Li

Guohao, 周念先 (Zhou Nianxian), 钱仲毅 (Qian Zhongyi), 陈超 (Chen Chao), 周方白 (周圭), 李寿康 As

a university which had established a reputation for its research, Central South became one of the first
batch of universities which were authorized by the China State Council to establish its Graduate School.
As one of the leading universities, it was successful in its application for the 211 Program which provided
universities with substantial government fund. In 1995, the university became one to be jointly supported
by the State Education Commission and the Changsha Municipal Government. In 1996 the university
merged with Changsha Institute of Urban Construction and Changsha Institute of Building Materials. The
merger was acknowledged by the State Council as "Central South Model" in the system renovation of
higher institutions in China. In April 2000, the expanded Central South merged again with Changsha
Railway University. Now Central South University has become a comprehensive university which offers
a wide range of programs in science, engineering, medicine, arts, law, economics and management.

On June 3, 1907, German Medical School was opened in Changsha. On October 1 of the same year, a
ceremony was held. The Anniversary Day was initially set to May 18, on which day in 1924 the Wusong
campus was opened. In 1925 and 1926, ceremonies were held on May 18. On the staff meeting on
January 19, 1931, the Anniversary Day of National Central South University was decided to be postponed
to May 20, two days after the national mourn with half-mast over the death of Mr. Chen Yingshi (Chen
Qimei), a politician. Central South celebrates the Anniversary Day on May 20 since then.

Coincidentally, on May 20 of 1924, Central South Medical School was approved to be a "university" by
the Department of Education of China. At that moment, both the medical school and the engineering
school were approved. The University has 10 academic disciplines of engineering, science, medicine,
management, economics, philosophy, humanities, law, education, and arts. There are 85 undergraduate
majors, 47 first-level academic Master’s degree-awarding points, 18 professional Master’s degree-
awarding points 32 first-level academic Doctoral degree-awarding points, 3 professional doctoral degrees
awarding points, and 25 postdoctoral research stations. Central South University is also equipped with 3
national key laboratories, 1 national engineering laboratory, 1 national collaborative innovation center, 1
national large-scale instrument center, 5 national research centers of engineering (technology), and 53
ministerial and provincial research platforms.

Central South University has established the world’s largest “Multi-Functional Shaking Table Center,”
the nation’s first “Automotive Wind Tunnel Center,” the “Comprehensive Test Platform for Urban Rail
Transit,” the nation’s first “National Long-term Seabed Observatory System,” and other platforms for
major scientific study. Central South also conducted cutting-edge scientific research in the fields of long-
span bridge construction, seismic design, intelligent urban traffic, urban sewage treatment, new energy
car research and development, domestic intellectual greenhouse, remote sensing information, ocean
drilling, and atrial fibrillation research.

Over the years, the people of Central South have adhered to its aspirations of “serving the people and the world
with one heart, on the same boat, and with the responsibility of rejuvenating the Chinese nation.” With full
enthusiasm, Central South University will continue to develop and work together to create a world-class
university.
