Instructions: Respond to the following questions about the article, "Night to His Day". Use extra paper if the
space provided below is insufficient (30 pts.).

1. Is it still so important to mark a child as a girl or a boy? (Why? Why not?)

Yes, let’s not give confusion to a child in his/her childhood years and so as to other
people that see your child. As we all know, girls has its biological references same goes to boys.
Marking a child as a girl or as a boy should be done. Thus, giving attention to societal influences
where they grow up is a different concern to discuss. Giving the fact that 21 st century brings a lot
of changes towards the humankind. However, the importance of marking is to denote an innocent
child where he or she belongs to or as identified. Let us not forget that in this world there is only
two kinds of people; girl and boy. Even we are faced and lived with a lot of changes in societal
norms specifically when we talk about gender, don’t give pretty assumptions to a child. God
created only men and women, spread that fact when the moment they understand things that
surrounds them. But the moment they turned their selves on what or who they truly are, respect
them because they are also human.
2. What is your stand about the "third gender"?
Third gender is also a human being. I am raised in a religious family and I understand
what third gender in a bible is, it is a sin. The moment when a child is born, it already has its
gender based on its genitalia and then third gender arises because of an individual own desires. I
cannot blame them because that is what they are. They are just born in a different body and I
respected them and equally treat them.
3. What are culture bound "gendered" practices that you observe in our country?
 Women take less dominating roles.
 Bakla were referring to soft men and men that acts like women.
 Women are tied to traditional roles as wife, mother and housekeeper.
 There are more men than women employed in forest based industries as well as fish sectors (JICA
reports).
 In dating, males usually pay the bills.
 Household chores are only for girls.
 Philippines is a Christian country, thus strongly believes that women are for men. Not men to
men and women to women.
 The image of a Filipino man is brave and strong, therefore strength and power are its expected
abilities.
 Men get more respect.
 In school system, males must have short hair and females wear skirt under their knees.
