AI and entertainment

Can AI enhance entertainment discovery?

In recent decade, as computing power was growing exponentially, AI (artificial intelligence)

has become viable and popular topic. AI as a tool can be implemented in every field – from scientific
studies to commercial product success. As research conducted by Giuseppe Amato et al (2019)
states that creative industries, such as music or movie production, would generally be acceptant of
better discoverability as it would directly corelate with higher sales. In this case, AI can be used to
enhance entertainment discovery mechanism. It can be achieved by gathering huge amounts of user
data (e.g., past movie or song searches, genres of entertainment etc.) and then passing it to
algorithm which analyses large chunks of data uses this analysis to recommend specific
entertainment options. However, no previous research has been conducted to identify specific ways
how artificial intelligence could influence entertainment discovery.
In order to analyse current AI capabilities in entertainment field, the following research
questions will be raised:
1) Is AI capable of recommending entertainment options to humans?
2) Which categories of entertainment would mostly benefit from AI advancements?
3) How costly would AI recommendation algorithm implementation would be?
The research data will consist of (1) public database of movies from IMDB and (2) publicly
available reviews from TMDB (themoviedatabase.org). At the first stage, data will only be collected
from movies that are at least 10 years old and will be analysed for one month.
The obtained data will be merged and analysed in three intersecting ways. First, basic movie
data from IMDB such as genre, duration, actors, descriptions etc. will be merged with public reviews
from the TMDB to create complete so-called movie information card. Second, the generated movie
information card will be fed to AI algorithm which will analyze reviewer data (age, gender, movie
preferences) and provide theoretical human profile who would like the movie. Third, to find if
algorithm provided data is viable, set of students from Vilnius University will be invited and required
to fill out data sheets with what type of movies they prefer to analyze if the algorithm correctly
guessed what people would like.
Overall, this study will contribute to deployment of AI powered entertainment discovery
options, by providing actual data which methods of customer data analysis is the most efficient in
returning the best recommendations. It is also expected that this research will provide exact amount
of capital that would be required to implement this solution in real world.
