V. ATTENDANCE

The BCBP is a registered Catholic organization offering the BCLP to all businessmen and professionals.
This BCLP is also open not only to Catholics but also to other Christian denominations as well. Participants
need not have any specific religious or spiritual background but should have had exposure to some form
of evangelism from their sponsors.

Note: See memo on sponsorship of candidates regarding restrictions, found in the latter part of
this section.

Every participant is expected to attend all sessions since the BCLP is offered as a unified package for
spiritual renewal. However, there will be times when absence is unavoidable. In such cases, the participant
should be given a make-up session by his / her Discussion Group Leader. In cases wherein either
husband or wife plans to drop out for any reason, his or her spouse should still be encouraged to attend.

Participants will be allowed no more than one (1) absence in Module One and Two, and not more than an
overall total of three (3) absences for the whole program. Any exception will be only upon approval of the
team leader.

Note: It is best that all participants be present during the Orientation Session.

In order for them to be witnesses, they have to be able to share the truth in a simple but convincing way. The
participants should not only see the life in them but also learn about it from them.

They have to be persons who are committed and can be counted on. They need to do their best to care for the

become firmly established in Christ and the BCBP.

• He has to be committed to his assigned work in the Brotherhood Christian Life Program.

• He has to be spiritually and emotionally sound. He must be faithful in complying with the BCBP
Commitment (White Card).

The Basic Requirements in selecting the members of the BCLP Service Team are:

• They must live out the basic BCBP commitments.

• They must be willing to serve.

• They must have good order in their family life.

• They must have demonstrated leadership and management capabilities.

03. For Session Speaker

“Everyone who calls out to the Lord for help will be saved.”
But how can they call to him for help if they have not believed?
And how can they can believeif they have not heard the message?
And how can they hear the message if the message is not proclaimed ?
And how can the message be proclaimed if the messengers are not sent out?
“How wonderful is the coming of the messengers who bring good news!”
So then, faith comes from hearing the message,
And the message comes through preaching CHRIST.

01. Invitation Letter

10 June 1999

Dear

As our friend, we would like to share a wonderful gift with you. We invite you to attend our chapter’s
next Brotherhood Christian Life Program (BCLP 29) which will start on August 21.

Discover the Lord’s loving and perfect plan for you and your loved ones by spending a few hours to
meet Him in a special way every Saturday from 3:00 to 6:00 in the afternoon at the Parish Hall of
Christ the King at Green Meadows Avenue.

We have nothing but cherished memories of our own BCLP; we both feel that it was one of the most
rewarding and enriching programs we had attended. Our family life has improved as we got a clearer
understanding of God’s plan for us and our family. We learned valuable insights which gave us a
deeper appreciation of God’s love for us. It can do no less for you.

We are all eagerly looking forward to having you share this meaningful, unforgettable and Spirit-filled
program with us because we know that the BCLP will offer you the opportunity to listen with your heart
and respond to our Lord’s gracious invitation. Until then, we pray that our He will continue to embrace
you and your loved ones with His protection.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Bobby & Marite Laviña

The BCLP Manual 1.8. The Discussion Group Leader

1.8.1. Roles and Responsibilities of the

Discussion Group Leader
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus,
Who will judge the living and the dead,
And because He is coming to rule as King,
I solemnly urge you to preach the message,
To insist upon proclaiming it (whether the time is right or not),
To convince, reproach, and encourage, as you teach with all patience.
The time will come when people will not listen to sound doctrine,
But will follow their own desires and will collect for themselves
More and more teachers who will tell them that they are itching to hear.
They will turn away from listening to the truth
And give their attention to legends.
But you must keep control of yourself in all circumstances;
Endure suffering, do the work of a preacher of the good news,
And perform your whole duty as a servant of God.
2 TIMOTHY 4: 1-5

Paul’s exhortation to Timothy in the above-mentioned passage is also applicable to the Discussion
Group Leaders:
A. Put up with hardships.
B. Perform your work as an evangelist.
C. Fulfill your ministry.

The BCLP Discussion Group Leaders assume responsibility for the overall care of each candidate in their groups.
They personally oversee and bring to issue each person’s relationship and commitment to Christ. In line with
this, they can tailor the discussions to meet the needs of their group.

They report to the BCLP Course Director in all spiritual matters and administratively, they report to the BCLP
Assistant Course Director.

The roles / duties of a Discussion Group Leader are divided into five (5) areas:

I. TO CONTRIBUTE LIFE TO THE PROGRAM

A. Participate enthusiastically in prayer and song.

B. Be joyful at all times.

C. Be warm and friendly, even if people are a bit stiff at first. People will warm up as we warmup to
them. Take special care to establish an atmosphere of love and interest in the group.

D. Establish a relaxed atmosphere. Don’t be overly serious, but maintain control of the situation.

Page 46 The Service Team Handbook August 2000 The BCLP Manual

The BCLP Manual 1.8. The Discussion Group Leader

1.8.1. Roles and Responsibilities of the Discussion Group Leader

(continued)

E. Inspire confidence by knowing exactly what is expected of you.

F. Remember that some of the participants have never been in this type of discussion groups. When
giving instruction, make sure they understand clearly what is said.

G. Study well the subject of the talk before hand so explanations can be made when required. Discussion
Guides of the talks will be given to you before the start of the seminar.

H. Be interested and listen attentively to the talks. Take notes. You can start teaching them bysetting
good examples. Support the BCLP Director.

I. Develop unity among your group. This can be done by setting up prayer partners.

J. Remember the names and important details of your discussion group members (name of spouse,
their children, where they work, their hobbies, etc.). By this you communicate a great amount of
concern.

II. TO COMMIT HIS / HER TIME

NOTE: ALL THESE ITEMS REQUIRE AN ADDITIONAL COMMITMENT OF YOUR TIME. HIS IS
THE TIME YOU OFFER TO THE LORD.

A. Come promptly to each session at the time indicated by the BCLP Director so that there will be
enough time for you to greet the participants as they come in and to get to know them, especially
the members of your discussion group. Ensure that the name tags and handouts of your group are
ready.

B. Stay after the session for the team meeting.

C. Contact those who were absent in the last session. Show them you are concerned. (A directory
will be completed on the first session.)

D. Schedule make-up sessions for those who were absent and ensure that these are done immediately
within the week after the session missed and completed before the Baptism session. A make-up
session consists of listening to a tape of the missed talk and having a short discussion with the DGL.
The purpose of this session is to ensure that the participant understands the talk and to give him an
opportunity to discuss the same.

E. Call your group 3 to 4 days before the next session to remind them of the forthcoming session.

F. Schedule and conduct the one-on-one dialogue meetings after the 4th talk (Repentance and Faith)
and the 8th talk (Life in the Holy Spirit).

(continued)

III. TO BE SPIRITUALLY PREPARED

A. Pray and intercede for the participants and the staff, and in particular for your own group.
B. At times there is a need for some extraordinary efforts to help you with a problem. Sacrifices like
fasting, abstaining from smoking or drinking can be a powerful weapon to help solve or overcome
the problem.
C. Partake of the sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist (as often as you can during the entire
BCLP period), and if required, the sacrament of Reconciliation.

IV. TO LEAD A DISCUSSION PERIOD

IMPORTANT: A STUDY MADE BY A PROFESSIONAL SPEAKERS’ BUREAU IN THE UNITED

STATES CAME UP WITH THESE STARTLING RESULTS. ON A GENERAL AVERAGE, ONLY
30% TO 35% OF A 40 TO 50 MINUTE TALK IS ASSIMILATED BY THE AUDIENCE. THAT IS
WHY THE DISCUSSION PERIOD IS SO IMPORTANT.

SINCE NO TWO PERSONS ASSIMILATE THE SAME 30% TO 35% OF THE SUBJECT, IT IS
SAFE TO ASSUME THAT EACH MEMBER HAS ASSIMILATED DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE
TALK. AS THEY DISCUSS THE TALK DURING THE DISCUSSION PERIOD, THERE IS AN
ASSURANCE THAT MORE OF THE TALK WILL SURFACE AND BE ASSIMILATED BY THE
GROUP.

A. Study the discussion guide of the talk ahead of time and plan how you will handle your discussion
period.

B. Start and end the discussion with a prayer.

C. Stay within the topic of the talk and the discussion questions.

D. Do not allow anyone to dominate the discussion.

E. Be firm but gentle in the handling of situations.

F. Do not allow impertinent questions, or theological questions that need long explanations. Long
explanations are better left until after the session is over.

G. Don’t be intimidated by anyone, but be prudent about it.

H. If the group is shy and there is no participation in the discussion, we suggest you break the ice by
starting with your own sharing. (This problem arises only during the first and second talk.)

I. As you listen to the talk, discern which points need to be taken up or repeated during the discussion
period.

1.8. The Discussion Group Leader

1.8.1. Roles and Responsibilities of the Discussion Group Leader

(continued)

J. Do not out-talk or out-share the participants. The idea is for them to participate. You only share to
get them involved.

K. If confronted with a question and you do not know the answer, admit ignorance and tell them you
will find out and let them know.

L. Exhort members to come on time.

M. If you learn of a moral problem involving one of your participants, refer the matter immediately to
your BCLP Director. This should be done privately.

N. Everything that is discussed or may surface at any time during the BCLP must be kept in strict
confidence. (Exceptions are when you have to advise the BCLP Director of the matter.)

O. Do not compare notes with your spouse on confidential matters of your group.

P. Prepare a confidential profile of each member of your group — their strengths and their weaknesses.
This will help you know what to pray for during the Baptism.

Q. Begin and end on time.

V. TO DISCIPLINE A PARTICIPANT OR THE WHOLE GROUP

A. Lead the group. Do not allow the group to lead you.

B. Do not allow pockets of conversation while the talks are going on, or while one of them is sharing
during the discussion period.
C. Correct any wrong speech: gossip, slander, negative humor or ridiculing someone or someone’s
defect or mistakes.
D. When there is need to correct someone for a serious indiscretion, avoid doing it publicly. Use
prudence and discretion and do it privately.

1.8.2. The Discussion Group

I. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR LEADING A DISCUSSION GROUP

A. Avoid Christian jargon. They may not be aware or comfortable with its use.

B. Encourage shy people who don’t speak much by asking them questions. Don’t put them on the
spot. Start with easy general questions at first, and then work your way up to more specific things
about themselves. Make sure everyone gets to talk during the discussion. Don’t allow anyone,
including yourself, to take too much time and dominate the discussion.

C. Open up the discussion only after you are sure they have understood the question and the main
points of the talk.

D. Don’t let the discussion get off the subject. Gently but authoritatively tell them that it is time to stop
this line of conversation. Suggest another time or place to the people involved.

E. When answering questions you don’t need to offer everything on the subject, but only what will help
the person most at this time. On the other hand, be willing to say “I don’t know” and/ or “I’ll find out.”

F. Don’t take up serious theological issues in the discussions.

G. Don’t talk down to people or appear to be an expert in something you are not.

H. One way to control dominant people in discussion groups is to speak to the person before the
session begins. Encourage their sharing but impress them with the limited amount of time and the
need for everyone to share.

I. Take notes and write down significant details of conversations in your group so that you can keep
tract of your people’s progress and if relevant, as a basis for the team meeting afterwards.

J. As you listen to the talk, discern which points your people especially need to hear and try to bring
those out in your sharing or in theirs. Read the outline of the talk ahead of time and think of what
you might say or do in the discussion group.

K. Follow-up regularly with your people during the week, especially during Module One of the BCLP, to
ensure that they understood the material and move ahead. If necessary, meet with them for further
discussions. Encourage them to be open, to persevere and to turn to the Lord to seek out His will
for them. Contact those who miss talks and get together with them for make-up sessions

L. Intercede for them and do spiritual warfare on their behalf. Fast and pray for them.

M. Do whatever is appropriate to bring to issue each one’s relationship with Christ. It is your
responsibility to help them personally and bring them to commitment to Christ.

N. Read and study the Team Manual.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All information received in confidence which relate to matters of

conscience must be kept in strict confidence, unless there is need for the BCLP Director to have
access to it.

(continued)

II. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A DISCUSSION GROUP?

The Discussion Group:

A. Helps people to open up and respond to God’s invitation.

B. Helps them to understand and digest the talks given.

C. Gives them a chance to ask questions.

D. Allows them to express their thoughts and feelings.

E. Provides an opportunity to deal with particular misconceptions and problems.

F. Supports them in their efforts to find the truth.

G. Provides a place for them to begin to experience Christian community.

III. DYNAMICS OF THE DISCUSSION GROUP

How does the Discussion Group work?

A. The discussion group forms and begins right after the talk. The men meet separately from the
women.

B. For the first session, start with introductions and let everyone get to know each other.

C. Start and end with a short prayer. Moving into Module II and Module III, you may ask others in your
group to lead the prayer if they are ready, but don’t put them on the spot.

D. Assure the participants that the principle of confidentiality is in force during your discussions.
Whatever is shared remains only within the group.

E. Let the group know that they are free to ask relevant questions or bring up relevant problems.

F. For Module I, if the participants are still not very open or are still shy, you may have to begin the
sharing yourself. This is also a good way of showing them how the discussion/ sharing is to be
handled.

G. Encourage the group to take down notes in the notebooks which will be provided for them.

H. If the group is eager to respond to the talk, allow them to, without bothering with the discussion
starter.

(continued)

I. Keep your eye on the time. Make sure that there is enough time for everyone to share.

NOTE: A discussion starter has already been provided in the handout. Use your own judgement,
considering where your participants are, or what you are more comfortable with.

IV. MAKE-UP SESSIONS

Participants who have missed a talk will have to take a make-up session.

The purpose of the make-up session is to ensure that the participant understands the talk and to give him
/ her an opportunity to discuss the same. It is also necessary because all the talks flow from one to the
other and missing one talk would break the continuity between the talks.

This make-up session consists of listening to a tape of the talk and having a short discussion with his / her
Discussion Group Leader.

It is the Discussion Group Leader’s responsibility to personally ensure that his / her participant takes the
make-up session. This should be done immediately within the week after the missed session.

After Module I, Session 4: Repentance and Faith

GOAL
The primary purpose of this individual meeting is to see whether the participant is willing
to go on to Module II and, more importantly, to see whether they are ready to continue
with the BCLP.

Readiness to go on consists in being willing to repent and turn away from serious
wrongdoing. Has the person repented for serious sin? You need to ask them directly
and get a direct response. If they are unclear of what serious sin includes, go through
the list.

After the talk on Repentance and Faith ending Module 1, the Discussion Group Leaders must meet individually
with each of the members of their group. These meetings should be held within the week prior to the start of
Module II.

The purpose of this meeting is to see whether the participants are willing to go on to Module II and more
importantly, to see whether they are ready to continue with the BCLP.

Readiness to go on consists in being willing to repent and turn away from serious wrongdoing. Has the person
repented for serious sin? You need to ask them directly and get a direct response. If they are unclear of what
serious sin includes, go through the list.

Note that what is important is willingness to turn away from sin. Sometimes, the actual turning away may not be
accomplished in a single, immediate act (e.g., breaking off with a mistress or giving up addiction to liquor). But if
they are willing to repent and continue with the BCLP, they may be allowed to go on.

Work out with them a timetable for finally setting their lives right and follow up on them through the succeeding
weeks. NO ONE SHOULD BE INVITED TO TAKE MODULE TWO IF THERE ARE SERIOUS THINGS THAT THE
PERSON IS NOT WILLING TO TAKE STEPS TO AMEND.

Readiness also involves a willingness to follow Jesus and to learn more about Him.

These individual meetings may be held at any place convenient to both DGL and participant. It may be in their
home, in their office, in a church, in a restaurant, at a park, etc. The only requirements are privacy and a
peaceful atmosphere.

(continued)

I. GUIDE QUESTIONS FOR THE MEETING

A. We have been talking and discussing basics of our faith. Are there any questions that I have not
answered? Is there anything that needs further clarification?

B. The first step to a full and committed life with the Lord is repentance, i.e., turning away from serious
wrongdoing and turning toward the Lord. If there is serious wrongdoing in your life, are you willing
to make a definite break with it? Serious wrongdoing includes but are not limited to the following:

1. Non-Christian religions and non-Christian practices like TM, SOM, etc.

2. All forms of the occult, spiritualism, witchcraft.
3. Sexual wrongdoing (adultery, masturbation, active homosexuality, perversity)
4. Murder, stealing, cheating.
5. Lying, slander, gossip.
6. Drunkenness, drugs.

FOR CATHOLICS: To make repentance full and effective, go to sacramental confession and make
a firm resolution to lead a new life acceptable to Jesus Christ.

C. Is there anything you wish to share or discuss with me? Is there any other way I can help you?

D. Are you ready to turn away from sin, confess (if there is serious wrongdoing) and commit your
life to the Lord? Will you accept Him as your Lord and Savior?

II. If the participant says YES. invite him to Module II.

III. If there are any issues on wrong doing that you cannot resolve, refer them to the BCLP Director.
Also inform the BCLP Assistant Leader of any participant who cannot be allowed to go on,
prior to the start of Module II.

After Module II, Session 8 : Life in the Holy Spirit

GOAL
The primary purpose of this individual meeting is to help the participant prepare for the prayer
session where each one receives the power of the Holy Spirit in a new way. Often called the
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, this session sometimes causes some queries in the mind of
the participant. The Discussion Leader will try to clear up any question concerning this. The
meeting also serves to give encouragement and support to the participant and to find out specific
areas where he / she needs to be strengthened and cared for.

After Module II, the Discussion Group Leaders once again meet individually with each of the members of their
group. These meetings should be held within the week prior to the prayer session for receiving the Power of the
Holy Spirit, which is the start of Module III.

The primary purpose of this individual meeting is to help the participant prepare for the prayer session where
each one receives the power of the Holy Spirit in a new way. Often called “Baptism in the Holy Spirit”, this session
sometimes causes some confusion in the mind of the participant. The Discussion Group Leader should try to
clear up any question concerning this.

This meeting also serves to give encouragement and support to the participant and to find out specific areas
where he/she needs to be strengthened and prayed for.

These individual meetings should be held as early as possible during the week so that the participant may have
enough time after this meeting to adequately prepare himself / herself for the prayer session. Don’t wait till the last
minute!

I. GUIDELINES FOR THE MEETING

A. Start with a prayer. Foster an atmosphere of concern, friendliness and informality.

B. Find out if there are any questions regarding what has transpired in the program or if there are any
problem areas. Discuss these.

C. Check the participant’s understanding of Baptism in the Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues. Explain
the concepts again. If there is any hang-up or fear in any of these areas, help the participant to get
over them.

D. If the participant has any involvement in the occult and the like (fortune telling, card reading, spirit of
the glass, etc.) which may or may not have been brought out in previous discussions, lead the
participant to verbally renounce this involvement.

E. Make sure that any serious wrongdoing, which the participant disclosed during your first one-on-
one, is no longer present in his / her life. Check if there are other areas of wrong doing which the
participant has not yet disclosed.

(continued)

F. Check if there are other barriers or other obstacles to the full release of the Spirit in his/her life. Are
there areas of unforgiveness, resentments, hatred, bitterness, etc. Lead the participant to forgive
the cause(s) of all these negative emotions. Pray for a repentant and forgiving heart.

G. Find out if the participant has had traumatic experiences so that you can pray for healing of
memories during the prayer session.

H. Find out if there are other areas of concern or difficulties that the participant would like to share with
you.

I. Ask if the participant has any prayer intentions or any specific concerns or problems that he/she
would like to be prayed for during the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

J. Remind the participant to go to confession, to go to Mass, receive Holy Communion, pray and fast
prior to the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

K. End the one-on-one by praying together after the meeting.

II. REMINDERS

A. The principle of confidentiality is still very much in force. Keep to yourself whatever information is
brought out, except what you cannot handle, in which case you should bring the same to the BCLP
Director. Any discussion of serious problems should be taken up only with the BCLP Director and
should not be specifically taken up during the team meeting. The team meeting is a time of sharing
in general, to see where people are at.

Always avoid gossip, slander or any wrong way of speaking about any participant.

B. Inform the BCLP Director immediately of any problem you cannot handle, or if there are any
obstacles to being prayed with for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Don’t wait until prior to the baptism
prayer session itself.

After Module IV, Session 16: Submission to Authority

GOAL
The primary purpose of this meeting is to help the participant understand the BCBP way of life
and discern if he or she will commit to this way of living. The Discussion Leaders should clear up
any questions concerning this. The meeting also serves to give encouragement and support to
the participant and to find out specific instanceswhere he or she may have difficulty living out the
commitment. Remember, there is no such thing as a private Christian (you cannot cover a
lamppost — it must shine out). The participants must be made to understand that we all need a
group or community in order for our faith to grow. It is easy to backslide if there is no support
group.

Before the end of Module IV, after the talk on Submission to Authority, the Discussion Group Leaders once again
meet individually with each of the members of their group. These meetings should be held within the week prior to
the session on Commitment, which is the end of Module IV.

The primary purpose of this individual meeting is to help the participants understand the BCBP Way of Life and
help them discern if they can commit to this way of living.

I. GUIDELINES FOR THE MEETING

A. Remember to bring a copy of the BCBP Commitment Card.

B. Start with a prayer. Foster an atmosphere of concern, friendliness and informality.

C. Find out if there are any questions regarding what has transpired in the program or if there are any
problem areas. Discuss these.

D. Explain the three sections of the BCBP Commitment Card:

1. I will live as a follower of Christ.
2. I will make myself available to the Lord for service.
3. I will be a Christian Businessman and Professional.

E. Find out if there are still areas of their life that needs to be addressed or worked out or if there are
any obstacles in meeting their commitment. (Inform the BCLP Course Leader if there are still
issues of wrongdoing or issues which contradict or go against our Catholic doctrine.)

F. For married participants, after the one-on-one discussions, proceed with a two-on-two meeting in
order to encourage and enhance commitment from both parties.

G. If there are no major problems, invite participants to commit. Make sure you get firm commitments
on their participation in all BCBP activities.

1.9. The Session Speaker

1.9.1. The Roles and Responsibilities of the

Session Speaker

“Everyone who calls out to the Lord for help will be saved.”
But how they can call to him for help if they have not believed?
And how can they believe if they have not heard the message?
And how can they hear the message if the message is not proclaimed?
And how can the message be proclaimed if the messengers are not sent?
“How wonderful is the coming of messengers who bring good news!”
So then, faith comes from hearing the message,
and the message comes through preaching Christ.
ROMANS 10: 13-15, 17

BCLP Session Speakers should be carefully chosen from among BCBP members who are actively involved and
comply with the BCBP commitment (White Card). There are many qualified members within the Brotherhood who
can serve in this capacity.

Spiritual preparation for the presentation of the talk is important. Session Speakers must remember that we are
weak instruments of the Lord, and we need His Holy Spirit to guide us during the preparation and presentation of
the talk. Prayers, the sacraments and fasting are sure ways of assuring ourselves of the Lord’s help and
guidance.

All Session Speakers are provided with an expanded outline of the talk. They should adhere to the outline and
comply with the time allotted for the talk.

In preparing and delivering the presentation, the Session Speaker should take into account the following
considerations:

• The average retention of a 30 to 40 minute talk is about 30 to 35% of its content. This is the reason
why the talk should be concise and direct to the topic.
• The BCLP talks are basically directed to the mind and anything emotional should be avoided as
much as possible because it tends to blur the topic or message of the talk. Keep the goals of the
session foremost in mind and exclude extraneous subjects that may deviate from the topic.
• The Speaker’s main purpose is to teach and not to entertain the participants.
• Points must be made simply and clearly, avoiding complexities. Main points should be highlighted;
do not bury them with side issues.
• Speakers should strive for a conversational tone, i.e., speak naturally and avoid a “preachy” style in
the delivery of the talk.

Since BCLP Session Speakers are under the supervision of the BCLP Course Director, they should provide the
BCLP Course Director with a copy of the presentation of their talk for his perusal.

1.10.1. Servanthood, Receiving the Power to Serve

and Spiritual Warfare
I. THE SITUATION IN THE WORLD

A. There are two kingdoms opposed to each other — the kingdom of darkness under Satan and the
kingdom of light under Jesus Christ.
The world is in Satan’s grip and his kingdom includes not only those who are evil, but also those
who are uncommitted. By being such, they serve Satan’s purpose.

B. Jesus has mounted a rescue operation, an attack against Satan’s kingdom. It involves bringing
people from darkness to light. It is taking territory from Satan.
Satan does not stand still. His dominion and his power over people is threatened. He undertakes
defensive action. This spiritual battle is continuing.

C. All people are torn in this battle for the hearts, minds and souls of men. More specifically, we in the
BCBP, having joined God’s kingdom, are in the thick of the fight. Because God used Jesus as the
instrument for other men’s redemption, we become a direct threat to Satan’s dominion. As we
evangelize and reach out to other businessmen and professionals, especially through a BCLP, we
actively enter into this battle.
Evangelism is spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6: 12

D. Being combatants, we need weapons and protection. We need means for offense and defense.

II. OUR SPIRITUAL WEAPONS

Always remember that we are waging God’s battle. 2Corinthians 10: 3-5
Because of this, God gives us the following offensive weapons:

A. COMMITMENT (to Christ’s cause).

1. Leading us to lives of righteousness, purity and holiness. 2 Corinthians 6: 7

2. We don’t need to be saints as yet, but we must have a passion for God’s
righteousness and a hatred for evil.
3. Have purity of motives and desires.
a. Serve for the glory of God, not our own.
b. Guard against the dangers of pride.
c. Have humility. Know that without Jesus’ victory on the cross, we can’t succeed.
4. We will be ineffective if we are not righteous. Matthew 7: 3-5

B. ZEAL.
1. Single-mindedness of purpose.
2. Perseverance.
3. Live totally for the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5: 15 Philippians 3: 7-8

1.10.1. Servanthood, Receiving the Power to Serve

and Spiritual Welfare (continued)

C. THE WORD OF GOD.

1. A sword! Ephesians 6: 17 Hebrews 4: 12
2. In the BCLP, we speak God’s word (in the talk and followed up in the discussion group).
God’s word has power. 1Thesalonians 1: 5

D. SPIRITUAL GIFTS
1. Charismatic gifts 1Corinthians 12: 4-10
2. Some applications:
a. Wisdom: to answer questions, to lead discussions
b. Discernment: to know where a person is at
3. Tongues and praise.

III. OUR PROTECTION

The armor of God is our protection. (Ephesians 6: 13-18) It is God’s provision alone which will give us
adequate protection.

Let us consider the points of attack by the devil and how the armor of God can protect us:

A. TRUTH. Protection against lies and errors.

1. Satan is the father of lies.
2. He will try to make us doubt God’s word (e.g. you’re too sinful to serve), or falsely accuse us,
or malign God’s character (e.g. God is not a loving God; He does not love you).
3. Rest on the truths of God’s love, God’s power, etc.

B. JUSTICE or RIGHTEOUSNESS. Protection against evil and sinful desires.

1. If Satan does not succeed by lies, he will try bombarding our minds with evil thoughts.
2. Resist these temptations. Remember that temptations are not sin unless entertained.

C. GOSPEL OF PEACE. Protection against an easy and lazy life.

1. If Satan cannot disturb us, then he will try to make us as comfortable and cozy as possible,
so that we won’t disturb him.
2. Beware of living a “carpet slipper Christianity”, wherein one journeys to heaven in first-class
comfort. Such persons have laid down their arms and are no longer concerned t o
attack and invade enemy-held territory.
3. We need to get our footgear on, leave the comforts of home and go out after Satan’s
captives. Have the zeal to propagate the gospel. (e.g. BCLP involvement)

D. FAITH. Protection against unbelief.

1. Doubts assail us. Fear of failure can cripple our action. The nagging question is: “Can
I do it?”
2. We need to have faith in God’s promises. Have faith that this is God’s work.
Hebrews 13: 5-6
3. We need to realize that we are acting not by our own power, but by God’s power.

1.10.1. Servanthood, Receiving the Power to Serve

and Spiritual Welfare (continued)

E. SALVATION. Protection against calamity and accident.

1. The word used for salvation means both physical as well as spiritual well-being.
2. Satan will try to make you sick, make spouses fight, may even try to get you killed.
3. But we have God’s protection. Before leaving your home, pray. Put on the “crash helmet” of
salvation.

F. WORD OF GOD.
1. The Word of God is both a weapon and a protection.
2. For BCLP participants, stress daily Scripture readings and recommend books.

G. PRAYER.
Pray at every opportunity, using the different kinds of prayer. (Personal prayer, Group prayer —
will be used at various times during the BCLP — Intercessory prayer, Fasting.)

IV. FOUR POINTS TO STRESS

A. Guard against two extremes:

1. That there is no devil, and
2. That all negative happenings are attributed to the devil.

B. Jesus has already won the victory in this fight against Satan.

C. We have the power to rout the devil, but such is premised on our righteousness and submission to
God. SJames 4: 7

D. As good soldiers, we can expect hardships and difficulties. 2 Timothy 2: 3

1.10.3. How to Lead a Discussion Group

I. INTRODUCTION

A. “I charge you to preach the word, to stay with this task whether convenient or inconvenient —
correcting, reproving, appealing — constantly teaching, and never losing patience. For the time will
come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine . . . . They will stop listening to the truth . . . . As
for you, be steady and self-possessed, put up with hardships, perform you work as an evangelist,
fulfill you ministry.” 2 Timothy 4: 2-5

B. Paul’s exhortation to Timothy in the above-mentioned passage is also applicable to the Discussion
Group Leaders:
1. Put up with hardships.
2. Perform your work as an evangelist.
3. Fulfill your ministry.

II. ROLES / DUTIES OF A DISCUSSION GROUP LEADER

The roles / duties of a Discussion Group Leader are divided into five (5) areas:

A. TO CONTRIBUTE LIFE TO THE PROGRAM

1. Participate enthusiastically in prayer and song.

2. Be joyful at all times.
3. Be warm and friendly, even if people are a bit stiff at first. People will warm up as we warm up
to them. Take special care to establish an atmosphere of love and interest in the group.
4. Establish a relaxed atmosphere. Don’t be overly serious, but maintain control of the situa-
tion.
5. Inspire confidence by knowing exactly what is expected of you.
6. Remember that some of the participants have never been in this type of discussion groups.
When giving instruction, make sure they understand clearly what is said.
7. Study well the subject of the talk before hand so explanations can be made when required.
Discussion Guides of the talks will be given to you before the start of the seminar.
8. Be interested and listen attentively to the talks. Take notes. You can start teaching them by
setting good examples. Support the BCLP Director.
9. Develop unity among your group. This can be done by setting up prayer partners.
10. Remember the names and important details of your discussion group members (name of
spouse, their children, where they work, their hobbies, etc.). By this you communicate a
great amount of concern.

1.10.3. How to Lead a Discussion Group

(continued)

B. TO COMMIT HIS / HER TIME

NOTE: ALL THESE ITEMS REQUIRE AN ADDITIONAL COMMITMENT OF YOUR TIME. THIS
IS THE TIME YOU OFFER TO THE LORD.

1. Come promptly to each session at the time indicated by the BCLP Director so that there will
be enough time for you to greet the participants as they come in and to get to know them,
especially the members of your discussion group. Ensure that the name tags and handouts
of your group are ready.
2. Stay after the session for the team meeting.
3. Contact those who were absent in the last session. Show them you are concerned. (A
directory will be completed on the first session.)
4. Schedule make-up sessions for those who were absent and ensure that these are done
within the week immediately after the session missed and completed before the Baptism
session. A make-up session consists of listening to a tape of the missed talk and having a
short discussion with the DGL. The purpose of this session is to ensure that the participant
understands the talk and to give him an opportunity to discuss the same.
5. Call your group 3 to 4 days before the next session to remind them of the forthcoming session.
6. Schedule and conduct the one-on-one dialogue meetings after the 4th (Repentance and
Faith) and the 8th (Life in the Holy Spirit) talks.

C. TO BE SPIRITUALLY PREPARED

1. Pray and intercede for the participants and the staff, and in particular for your own group.
2. At times there is a need for some extraordinary efforts to help you with a problem. Sacrifices
like fasting, abstaining from smoking or drinking can be a powerful weapon to help solve or
overcome the problem.
3. Partake of the sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist (as often as you can during the
entire BCLP period), and if required, the sacrament of Reconciliation.

SINCE NO TWO PERSONS ASSIMILATE THE SAME 30% TO 35% OF THE SUBJECT,
IT IS SAFE TO ASSUME THAT EACH MEMBER HAS ASSIMILATED DIFFERENT PARTS
OF THE TALK. AS THEY DISCUSS THE TALK DURING THE DISCUSSION PERIOD,
THERE IS AN ASSURANCE THAT MORE OF THE TALK WILL SURFACE AND BE
ASSIMILATED BY THE GROUP.

2. Start and end the discussion with a prayer.
3. Stay within the topic of the talk and the discussion questions.
4. Do not allow anyone to dominate the discussion.
5. Be firm but gentle in the handling of situations.
6. Do not allow impertinent questions, or theological questions that need long explanations.
Long explanations are better left until after the session is over.
7. Don’t be intimidated by anyone, but be prudent about it.
8. If the group is shy and there is no participation in the discussion, we suggest you break
the ice by starting with your own sharing. (This problem arises only during the first and
second talk.)
9. As you listen to the talk, discern which points need to be taken up or repeated during the
discussion period.
10. Do not out-talk or out-share the participants. The idea is for them to participate. You only
share to get them involved.
11. If confronted with a question and you do not know the answer, admit ignorance and tell them
you will find out and let them know.
12. Exhort members to come on time.
13. If you learn of a moral problem involving one of your participants, refer the matter immediately
to your BCLP Director. This should be done privately.
14. Everything that is discussed or may surface at any time during the BCLP must be kept in
strict confidence. (Exceptions are when you have to advise the BCLP Director of the
matter.)
15. Do not compare notes with your spouse on confidential matters of your group.
16. Prepare a confidential profile of each member of your group — their strengths and their
weaknesses. This will help you know what to pray for during the Baptism.
17. Begin and end on time.

E. TO DISCIPLINE A PARTICIPANT OR THE WHOLE GROUP

1. Lead the group. Do not allow the group to lead you.

2. Do not allow pockets of conversation while the talks are going on, or while one of them is
sharing during the discussion period.
3. Correct any wrong speech: gossip, slander, negative humor or ridiculing someone or
someone’s defect or mistakes.
4. When there is need to correct someone for a serious indiscretion, avoid doing it publicly. Use
prudence and discretion and do it privately.

1.10.4. Fasting
I. INTRODUCTION

The service team is greatly encouraged to engage in fasting during the entire course of the program, not
only as a means of personal spiritual growth, but more so as a personal sacrifice for the intention of the
participants, the people who the Lord has entrusted to our care.

II. HOW DO WE FAST?

The normal means of fasting involves abstaining from all food, solid or liquid, but not from water. However,
one could also engage in a partial fast, which is a restriction of diet but not total abstention. Just consider
what your body can take or how far you yourself want to go.

We can fast on the day of the session itself. We can start our fast after the previous night’s supper or at
midnight and end with supper before the session.
Note: Not all are physically fit to fast. We suggest that you first get your doctor’s consent, especially
if you are a diabetic, an expectant mother or a heart patient. The Church exempts those who
are over sixty years of age.

III. WHY SHOULD WE FAST?

A. Fasting is a means of worshipping God and centering our lives and our existence on the Lord.
1. Like the prophetess Anna we need to be worshipping in fasting and prayer. (Luke 2: 37)
2. As in the case of the apostolic band at Antioch, fasting and prayer go together (Acts 13: 2-3)

B. Fasting is also a weapon for spiritual warfare (Matthew 17: 21). We can expect Satan to beangry at
the work we are doing, and he will be trying to stop us and the BCLP participants from receiving
what God has to offer. We need to fast in our fight against evil forces.

C. Fasting is a way by which we can control our body and the desires of the flesh. In life we crave for
so many things (not just food) which we do not need until we become controlled or enslaved by
them. By fasting we learn to discipline ourselves and to keep our desires in the proper perspective.
Fasting helps us keep our balance in life.

D. Fasting reveals the things that control us. We cover up what is inside us with food and other good
things, but in fasting these things surface. If pride controls us, it will be revealed. Anger, bitterness,
jealousy, strife, fear — all these will surface during fasting. And knowing these things within us is a
great benefit to one who longs to be transformed into the image of Christ. We can now come
before the Lord and pray for healing in these areas.

E. Fasting is a way by which we grasp the reality that we live not by bread alone, but more importantly
by the Word of God (Matthew 4: 4). We are totally dependent on the Lord for our existence, and
our spiritual life is of much more importance than our physical life.

F. Fasting is a way by which we can relate, though admittedly in a very small way, to the sufferings of
people who don’t have adequate food or other necessities of life. By actually experiencing doing
without, we can empathize more with their plight.

G. Other values of fasting are increased effectiveness in intercessory prayer, guidance in decisions,
increased concentration, deliverance for those in bondage, physical well being, etc.

1.10.5. Team Meetings

I. The team meeting is almost always the only opportunity that the Service Team Members have
to discuss their work. It should be time used for support and encouragement, a time that builds
unity, faith and love.

II. Aside from these, the team meetings also help to:
• Create a spiritual unity among the team members,
• Help the team members learn how to better serve the Lord,
• Communicate what is happening in the seminar as a whole.

III. The service team should spend time not only in talking about administrative details but in
having a concrete discussion of the problems and situations they are facing. They must limit
their discussions to situations and avoid mentioning names.

IV. Team meetings are usually held after the session itself in order to evaluate what happened in
the session. Use these meetings to:
• Review the participant’s reaction to the day’s session,
• Get the views of the service team on how the session turned out,
• Take up any salient issues that are pertinent for the next session.

Remember, however, that it has been a long day for the entire service team, so the meeting
should be brief and limited strictly to the important issues.

SUBJECT: Sponsorship of Candidates

Application forms for distribution to potential candidates should start being distributed no later than 45
days before the scheduled BCLP opening. This will give sponsors ample time to begin the evangelization process
of their candidates. Reminders and follow-ups should periodically be made during BCBP activities like the
breakfasts and assemblies.

All efforts must be directed towards ensuring that the application is the result of a personal decision. We
must avoid having any candidate apply because of sponsor pressure. Arm twisting methods should be avoided.
The acceptance of the invitation must be one of free choice.

The purpose of the sponsor’s evangelistic efforts is to awaken the candidates need and desire to live and
grow into a more meaningful relationship with Jesus, before signing the application. If the sponsor is aware of
any serious impediments the applicant may be involved in, he assumes responsibility to inform the candidate
that such practices are not tolerated in the Brotherhood. Should the applicant show at this stage that he or she is
unwilling to give up said practices or affairs, the sponsor should not pursue further the sponsorship.

The BCLP is not a reformatory where people are invited to attend in the hope that they will change for the
better. The following persons will not be permitted to attend the BCLP:

1. An alcoholic
2. A drug addict
3. One who is emotionally disturbed
4. A sex pervert.

The interest of this rule is not being uncharitable, but rather the opposite. True charity demands that we
exercise caution for the benefit of those who may be influenced while relating to this person. The bad examples
and influence this person can have over the others may be prejudicial to their spiritual formation. Our experience
in previous BCLPs is what influenced the BCBP to implement this ruling. We request all sponsors to abide by
these directives.

The maximum number of candidates to be accepted in a CLP is not to exceed eighty (80). The reason
for this ruling is as follows:

1. Larger groups are unmanageable and do not foster close ties among the candidates who eventually
will form part of a single Chapter unit.

2. The limited number of trained discussion group leaders to handle larger groups.

The discussion groups should at no time be larger than six. A larger number will prevent full participation
during the question period or prevent some of the members from sharing.

Acceptance of applications will close one week before the scheduled BCLP opening date to give the
BCLP staff sufficient time to prepare their groupings, etc.

No last minute applications will be entertained on a chance basis.

The number of discussion group leaders trained will be limited to accommodate a maximum of eighty
candidates. In previous BCLPs, untrained Chapter members were chosen at random on the opening day of the
BCLP to accommodate the influx of unexpected candidates. This was totally unfair to those candidates who
were handled by inexperienced and untrained discussion group leaders.

The BCLP Course Director will assume responsibility and see that these directives are complied with.

The Chapter Head, the Mission director and BCLP Course Director are requested to transmit these
information to their members to avoid misunderstandings and embarrassment.

SUBJECT: Supervision over the BCLP Speakers

Your Chapter has selected you to lead this forthcoming BCLP/ You have been given the privilege and
opportunity to serve God and your brothers in this capacity. Congratulations are in order.

You are requested to comply with the directions of this revised manual and avoid making any adapta-
tions or changes in its format. This directive is made to sure that all BCLPs are administered in the same way by
all Chapters.

You are also to assume supervision over the speakers to assure adherence to the outline of the talk and
compliance with the time schedules allocated to each talk. The speakers are there to teach and not to entertain
the candidates. We want the candidates to assimilate the essence of the talk. The more frill that are added, the
less they will retain.

A recent study made by the speaker’s bureau group concluded that the average retention of a 30 to 40
minute talk is about 30 to 35% of its content. This is the reason why the talk should be concise and direct to the
topics.

The BCLP is basically directed to reach the mind, and anything emotional should be avoided as much as
possible. Emotions tend to blur the topic or message of the talk being delivered.

God bless you and your staff in this endeavor.
