EXPERIMENT 4: TITRIMETRIC ANALYSIS

DETERMINATION OF ACID CONTENT IN

SODA AND VINEGAR
PRELAB REPORT

Name:
Section:
Date:

I. Objectives
 Find the quantity of acidic substance in soda and vinegar using acid-based
titrimetric analysis.

II. Reagents and Equipment

 potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP)
 1 mL volumetric pipette
 0.1 M NaOH
 20 mL volumetric pipette
 1% phenolphthalein
 250 mL Erlenmeyer flasks
 white vinegar
 50 mL base burette
 colorless soda sample
 burette clamp
 iron stand

IV. Special Notes

1. Waste Disposal

 Collect the excessed NaOH into a beaker, dilute with plenty of water, and
flush with abundant running water directly down the drain.
 With plenty of water, dilute all titrated solutions and wash straight into the
drain with ample running water.

2. Safety Precautions

Proper handling of NaOH

 Always wear goggles, gloves, and protective clothing (PPE)

when handling NaOH.
 Do not wear short sleeved shirts, short pants, or sandals.
 Work in a well ventilated area.
 Remove contaminated clothing immediately.
 Clean up spills immediately.
