AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT
M
it against ApSandard
YFind out the strength of supplied solution of hydrochloric acid by titrating

solution of sodium carbonate.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
M standard solution of sodium
Burette. pipette, funnel, stand, wash bottle, conical flask, HCl solution,
carbonate.

THEORY
Chemical Reaction
Na,CO,(oq) + 2HCI() 2NaCI(aq) + H,0(|) + CO,(e)
Indicator to be used: Methyl orange.
Type of titration: Acid-base titration
End point: Light yellow to pink colour
PROCEDURE

1. Rinse

the burette with unknown solution of hydrochloric acid and fill it with HCl above the zero
2. Placea beaker under the nozzle of burette. Open the stopcock and allow the solution to flow out
rapidly into the beaker to remove the air bubbles. Bring the lower meniscus of HCI solution to
zero mark. Use antiparallax card to illuminate the surface of HCl solution.
3. Clean and rinse the pipette with sodium carbonate solution. Pipette out 10 mL
solution of sodium
carbonate solution to the titration flask. Add 1-2 drops of methyl orange indicator.
4. Fix up antiparallax card with burette to illuminate the surface of HCl
solution drop-by-drop in the titration flask and shake it continuously. solution. Start adding HCI
