Wearable devices
Introduction:
Wearable technology is any technology that is designed to be used while worn. Common types of
wearable technology include smartwatches and smartglasses. Wearable electronic devices are often close
to or on the surface of the skin, where they detect, analyze, and transmit information such as vital signs,
and/or ambient data and which allow in some cases immediate biofeedback to the wearer.

Theoretical Background:
Wearable devices such as activity trackers are an example of the Internet of Things, since "things"
such as electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity are effectors that enable objects to exchange data
(including data quality) through the internet with a manufacturer, operator, and/or other connected
devices, without requiring human intervention.
Wearable technology has a variety of use cases which is growing as the technology is developed and
the market expands. Wearables are popular in consumer electronics, most commonly in the form factors of
smartwatches, smart rings, and implants. A popular smartwatch in the market is the Apple Watch. A
popular smart ring is the McLear Ring, and a popular implant is the Dangerous Things NExT RFID + NFC Chip
Implant. Apart from commercial uses, wearable technology is being incorporated into navigation systems,
advanced textiles, and healthcare. As wearable technology is being proposed for use in critical applications,
like other technology, it is vetted for its reliability and security properties.
Many tech companies, especially wearable technology companies, have spent the last two years
focusing on using their skills to address issues created by the worldwide pandemic. Simultaneously, many
healthcare firms that would not have been called tech companies in the past have shifted their focus to
technology and its potential to revolutionize how their products and services are delivered. It’s apparent
that the pandemic has hastened the healthcare industry’s digitalization. Because of technological
advancements in wearable technology in healthcare, we can now track useful information more quickly,
making our lives more fluid and simple.

Literature Survey:
In the consumer space, sales of smart wristbands (aka activity trackers such as the Jawbone UP and
Fitbit Flex) started accelerating in 2013. One in five American adults have a wearable device, according to
the 2014 PriceWaterhouseCoopers Wearable Future Report. As of 2009, decreasing cost of processing
power and other components was facilitating widespread adoption and availability.
In professional sports, wearable technology has applications in monitoring and real-time feedback
for athletes. Examples of wearable technology in sport include accelerometers, pedometers, and GPS's
which can be used to measure an athlete's energy expenditure and movement pattern.

In cybersecurity and financial technology, secure wearable devices have captured part of the
physical security key market. McLear, also known as NFC Ring, and VivoKey developed products with
one-time pass secure access control.

In health informatics, wearable devices have enabled better capturing of human health statics for
data driven analysis. This has facilitated data-driven machine learning algorithms to analyse the health
condition of users.

Current Trends:
Wearable technology or wearables are the electronic devices that are worn on a person’s body
(typically close to the skin) to send vital medical, biochemical correctly, and exercise data to a database.
The Apple Watch and Fitbit are iconic examples of wearable technology, but they’re not the only ones
being produced today. Smartwatches, VR and AR technologies, smart coats, and a plethora of other
wearable devices, in addition to smartwatches, are guiding us toward a more connected existence.
The primary function of each device is to capture millions of data points ranging from counting the
steps to monitoring heart rate. Wearing mini wearable devices can improve the user’s working capacity
and modify the way they function in this fast-paced environment.

Future Scope:
One of the key growth areas for wearable healthcare devices integration is implantable medical
technology. Wearable devices for vital signs monitoring will reach USD$980M market by 2024, growing at
21.7% CAGR. Areas of concern that will need addressing are data security, privacy as well as opportunities
for advanced data analytics. Remote data collection solutions will substantially enhance the operational
efficiency of healthcare services. Wearable devices and IoT will reduce human intervention in healthcare,
enabling context-based automation.
The future of wearable technology will include successes and failures. It’s also safe to say that
wearable tech will probably follow the same minimalist trend cellphones took when they started ramping
up. As popularity increases, the visibility of such devices will decrease, meaning that visual elements will
change over time, and wearables will start looking as mundane or extravagant as jewelry or clothing.

Conclusion:
Patients suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, neurological
disorders, and diabetes require real-time monitoring.

Wearable devices are made of transducers and target receptors and are worn on the human body
or on clothing. The function of wearable technology is to detect changes in the body and provide real-time
updates, helping physicians understand the changes in the human body. Wearable technology and smart
technology in the healthcare sector is not new concept. Glucose monitors for diabetics are common, while
pacemakers and defibrillators, classified as implanted devices, provide life support to patients.

One of the first devices used int he healthcare technology is biosensors. In 1956, biosensors were
used for the very first time to detect blood-oxygen levels through electrodes. The device was designed for
detecting blood oxygen levels in real-time in operating room settings during cardiovascular surgery.

Based on this electrochemical biosensor and the use of electrodes, the first glucose analyzer was
created in 1975. Further advancements in material sciences lead to the invention of integrated HWDs that
consist of electronic devices designed to process and share data. Ever since integrated HWDs came into
existence, further advancements in healthcare wearables technology took place.

Communication modules and Bluetooth technology have further developed in recent years and with
HWDs visualization and transmitting data have become possible. Wearable devices have experienced
significant advancements, especially in recent years, and have simplified therapeutic procedures. In
addition to this, the latest advancements have also minimized the risk of infections.
