Stimulants are a class of drugs that
speed up the messages
between the brain and the
body. can make a person
They feel more awake,
alert, confident or
energetic.

15
Depressants substances reduce arousal
and stimulation. They do
not necessarily make a
person feel depressed.
They affect the central
nervous system, slowing
down the messages
between the brain and the
body. They can affect
concentration and
coordination
16
Hallucinogens are a diverse group of
drugs that alter perception,
thoughts, and feelings.
They cause hallucinations,
or sensations and images
that seem real, but they are
not. Hallucinogens are split
into two categories:
classic hallucinogens and
dissociative drugs

17
(also referred to as
'dissociative anaesthetics')
Dissociatives are a class of psychedelic
drug. This class of drug is
characterised by distorted
sensory perceptions and
feelings of disconnection or
detachment from the
environment and self. The
word dissociative means
detached from reality

18
A substance used to treat
Opiods moderate to severe
pain. Opioids are like opiates,
such as morphine and codeine,
but are not made from
opium. Opioids bind
to opioid receptors in the central
nervous system. Opioids used to
be called narcotics. An opioid is
a type of alkaloid.

Inhalants household and industrial
chemicals whose volatile
vapors or pressurized gases
can be concentrated and

What is drug addiction?
Drug addiction is a chronic disease
that changes the brain circuits,
including those responsible for
governing self-control and other
behaviors. Quitting drugs, even with
the best intentions and strongest
will is very difficult, since drugs
change the brain in ways that foster
compulsive drug abuse.

56
What is alcoholism?

Alcoholism is when you have

trouble controlling your
drinking, you are preoccupied
with alcohol, you continue to
use alcohol even when it
causes problems in your life
(job, relationships, health)

57
Why do drug-addicted persons
keep using drugs?

Drug addiction is a biological

problem that causes changes
in the brain after long term drug
abuse, making it difficult to
abstain from drugs without
getting treatment.

58
What is drug addiction treatment?
The best drug addiction
treatment is based on the
individual and the type of
addiction. Addiction treatment
can include a combination of
detoxification, medication and
behavioral therapy. Because drug
addiction is typically a chronic
disorder, it is usually a long-term
process in order to avoid relapse.
59
Can alcoholism and addiction be cured?
Alcoholism and addiction are
chronic diseases that can be
managed successfully with
ongoing treatment. Treatment
has helped millions of people
stop drinking and drugging,
rebuild their lives and live a life
in long-term recovery. Like
other diseases, it is not always
cured.
60
Will treatment work or will I relapse?
Treatment works and has helped millions
of people rebuild their lives. Addiction has
physiological and behavioral components,
thus successful treatment involves
changing deeply rooted behaviors. There
are times when there is an underlying
mental health issue that does not get
treated and thus the person may turn to
drugs again, causing a relapse. Relapse
means the treatment needs to be either
reactivated or another type of treatment
needs to be utilized.

73
How do I know if someone is addicted
to drugs or alcohol?
When the person keeps using
drugs even after the negative
affects upon their life, such as loss
of job, relationship issues, debt, or
physical problems. When their
addiction is impeding their life and it
doesn’t matter what you say or how
bad the situation gets. When drugs
are more important than anything
else in their life. 74
Why do some people become addicted
to drugs or alcohol, while others don’t?
Like other diseases, conditions differ from
person to person. Common risk factors
for addiction and alcoholism include
genetics, the age when you began using
alcohol or drugs, your family situation
(such as abuse, trauma, neglect), your
social environment (where you live, who
you hang out with, ease of access to
alcohol or drugs) and the type of drugs
that are used.
75
What is dual diagnosis about drugs?
Dual diagnosis, also referred to as co-occurring disorder, is
when someone experiences a mental illness (bipolar, anxiety,
depression, PTSD) and a substance abuse problem
simultaneously. Either substance abuse or mental illness can
develop first. Someone with a mental health condition may turn
to drugs and alcohol to self medicate and try to alleviate their
mental health symptoms, making the condition even worse.
Substance abuse can also lead to mental health problems
because of the effects drugs have on a person’s moods,
thoughts, brain chemistry and behavior. People with co-
occurring disorders need a specialized form of treatment,
referred to as integrated services or dual diagnosis treatment.
76
Is Marijuana really dangerous?
People think marijuana is not
harmful but it can lead to drug
addiction and studies are showing
that it can also cause health
issues, just like cigarettes. There
are more teens in treatment with a
primary diagnosis of marijuana
dependence than for all other
illegal drugs combined. Marijuana
is often considered a gateway
drug, leading to more illicit drugs
such as heroin.
77
Can prescription drugs really lead to
addiction?
Prescription drugs are no safer than
alcohol or illegal drugs. Just
because a doctor prescribes a
medication, doesn’t mean you can’t
become addicted. Taking someone
else’s prescription medication is
dangerous and can lead to abuse or
even death. According to a Drug-
Free World, more than 15 million
people abuse prescription drugs, in
the US alone. 78
What is detoxification, or “detox”?

Detox is the process whereby the

body rids itself of the drug while
managing the withdrawal
symptoms. It is only the first step
in drug or alcohol treatment and
must be followed up with
behavioral therapy.

79
What is withdrawal and how long does
it last?

Withdrawal is the symptoms after

long-term drug or alcohol abuse
stops and can last for several
days but the emotional or mental
state can last for weeks.
Medication can help but the
addiction still needs to be treated

80
What is the connection between
CRIME and DRUGS?
There is a definitive link between crime and drug addictions
that is mainly contributed to the illegal status of commonly
abused drugs. Not only is it illegal to carry many of these drugs
but an individual’s lowered inhibitions when under the influence
can encourage them to commit other crimes. The types of
crime that an individual may commit when on drugs is
extensive and dependent on a variety of sub-factors, but
regardless, drug users are more likely than nonusers to
commit crime. Petty theft in order to obtain drugs and satiate
their cravings when desperate is another way in which drugs
influence individuals to commit crimes.
81
Why drug addiction is a social problem?
A common misconception surrounding
drug addiction is that it solely affects
the life of the user. However, the idea
that they aren’t hurting anyone except
for themselves is an excuse that many
individuals who abuse drugs use in
order to justify their addiction. Drug
addiction is not a one-person
phenomenon, and it creates a domino
effect on the lives of those around
them. It is a social problem that
normalizes drug use and affects
individuals and their families.

youth on detection
and prevention?

a drug prevention programme
allows them to share their own
experiences with drug abuse in
which they were directly or indirectly
affected. For other young people,
this is greatly effective because they
begin to understand drugs from a
point of view from someone their
