ABSTRACTION: Do we need to preserve or just promote the following:

Rituals and ceremonies

Of course, preserving cultures with their traditions, rituals and ceremonies is entirely
voluntary, but there are several good reasons to do so. Cultures is how we, as human
beings, adapt to the world around us. Old cultures and their traditions are these
adaptations preserved. Cultures also change over time as new conditions and new
ideas come into the culture and the people adapt to the changes the face. Cultures are
not stagnant things that never change, but living and adaptive systems. Old traditions
carry artifacts of adaptations to conditions of the past that form the foundations for new
changes in the future. Cultures, traditions and rituals bind people together and allow
them to act together in the face of adversity. Large modern states would like everyone
to conform to the dominant culture and just, “fit in.” But large dominant cultures regularly
push minority and non-mainstream groups to the fringes of society where they have no
influence and power. This is usually because they are divided and the dominant culture
either denigrates or ignores them. Cultures, traditions, and rituals bring minority people
together because of their shared identity and common traditions. This can allow them to
act together against being overrun and disregarded by the dominant culture.

Landmarks and shrines

The reason for preserving them, aside from their architectural value, is that they
embody our values, our cultural identity and historic continuity. Protecting
our patrimony helps remind people of their historical roots and identity and can serve
to bind the nation together.
