From Walking
to Biking
The bicycle is not the idea of just one persono Over time,
many people contributed to its developrnent.
.The first bicycle was made of wood. lt had two wheels
.: ',' ',:
but no pedals. You didn't ride it-you walked jt! lt was called
a "hobby horse" or "walking machine."
The velocipede came next. Velocipedes had pedals.
Pedals were a good idea. With pedals, people could ride
instead of walk or push their velocipedes. But velocipedes
were hard to ride on cobblestone streets, and so they were
called "boneshakers."
Later, people rode a new kind of bicycle called a "high
wheeler." lt was made of metal and had a high front wheel
and solid rubber tires. lt was more comfortable than a
boneshaker, but people could fall off easily. Women didn't ride
high wheelers because women at the time wore long skirts.
They rode a machine with three wheels, called a tricycle.
The next bicyc1e went back to two wheels of the same size.
lt had metal parts and pneumatic tires, and was called the
"safety bicycle." This design became the standard for modern
bicyc1es. Then companies began to make bicycles for children.
Now everyone enjoys bicycles!

Colorful Corals
When you ñrst see coral s, you may think you are looking at
a colorful underwater garden. But corals are animals, not plants.
Corals are made up of small individual animals called polyps.
Polyps have soft, transparent bodies with no bones inside.
What's for dinner? Polyps have a mouth, stornach, and
tentacles to catch food. How polyps get food depends on where
they live. Polyps lucky enough to live in warm, sunlit zones eat
tiny plants called algae. ln contrast, polyps that live in cold,
dark zones don't eat algae. They must fmd a place to live with
a strong current of moving water. They use their tentacles to
catch tiny anirnals called plankton in the water.
Underwater cornrnunities. Most corals live together in
huge groups called colonies. Some build a protective skeleton
around themselves. As old generations die and new ones
grow on top, polyps slowly build up coral reefs. Some are
mi11ions of years old. These beautiful reefs are home to more
than 4,000 kinds of ñsh and thousands of other organisms.

"Letterboxing" 1S a fun outdoor hobby. Here's

how it works: People hide a box. lnside the box,
they put a rubber starnp and a notebook. They
post clues on websites to help you fmd the box.
Then you look for the letterbox! You need to
have your Internet clues, a pen or pencil, your
notebook, and a rubber stamp. You may need a
map and compass, too.
\,
When you fmd the letterbox, you look for
the notebook inside. Then you write your name,
hometown, and the date. You press your rubber
stamp on the page. Then you take the stamp from
inside the box and stamp it in your own notebook.
Finally, you wrap the box eareful1y. You leave it
where you found it for another person to fmd.
Dorrie and her mom love letterboxing! On their last vaeation, they
used clues to fmd a letterbox. Her mom read one clue: "Pass the apple
tree on your right." Then she read the last c1ue: "Keep your back to the
tree and take four steps." Dorrie took four steps. There it was! lt was a
plastic box, hidden under sorne stones. Dorrie read the notebook to see
who was there before her. She added her name and stamp and then used
the stamp from the letterbox on her notebook.
Dorrie wants to go letterboxing again. She says, "1 love reading
mysteries and solving problerns!"

Origami is a very popular hobby today.
The Japanese invented it in the 17th century,

two Japanese words: "ori," which means
"folding," and "kami:' which meuns "pcper,'
In origami, you always begin with one square
sheet of papero Then you fold the poper
many times to make a shope. Origami is
