An investigation into the amount of money spent on food at the canteen by
students of Grade 11.
Introduction
Food is one of the necessities in life, especially for those who will be having CSEC
shortly. Because of this, students will find it convenient to simply buy food from
the canteen as it is a quick meal for studying. Thus, students of Grade 11 spend
most of their allocated money at the canteen on food. The researchers then decided
to investigate how much of their allowance is spent on mouth-watering soft drinks,
burgers and puri and sausage compared to overlooked foods such as Plantain chips
and cassava chips.
This SBA explored how much money these Grade 11 students spent on food and
beverages at the Presidents College Canteen in 2021 daily.
The objectives of this SBA were as follows:
 To determine the average amount of money spent daily on food and
beverage.
 To calculate the percentage of the student’s weekly allowance being used on
food and beverages.
Method of Data Collection
The researchers decided to use a survey instrument; a questionnaire. The
questionnaire consisted of 10 questions asking information relating to Grade 11
students spending money. The researchers put the questions into a Google Form
and distributed it through WhatsApp to 50 Grade 11 students from Presidents
College. This number was chosen because it is more than half of the population of
students from that grade. The Survey was distributed on 30/09/2021 and
recollected the next day, in which the questionnaire was then closed after reaching
50 responses. After the results were collected the researchers compiled a list of the
most common answers and placed them into graphs.
Presentation of Data
After the raw data was collected from the questionnaires, the most suitable
questions relating to the objectives were chosen and the information was then
arranged into charts and tables below:

Analysis of Data
The first pie chart displays how often items are purchased at the canteen. It was
presented that every student questioned buys from the canteen since no one (0%)
answered that they never buy. In contrast, only 16% of students always buy from
the canteen, while the vast majority of the students questioned (58%) purchase
often from the canteen and 26% seldom buy.
The bar chart shows the items bought by the grade eleven students at the canteen.
It was noted that chicken and chips had 66% sale overall and cake and pastries had
no sales among the seven different items sold at the canteen. Additionally, the sale
of fried rice was eleven times (6%) that of chicken and chips. The chart
demonstrates the same number of sales (2%) for chowmein and hotdog likewise it
also demonstrates the same number of sales (10%) for cheese plantain and egg and
other. Finally, it was observed that only 4% of the students purchased puri and
sausage at the canteen.
According to the bar graph, $2100-$3000 is the most allowance allocated or given
to the grade 11 students weekly with a total of 13 students (26%). The amount of
$1000-$2000 is the second-highest allowance allocated to grade 11 with 12
persons (24%), one less than the highest. The allowances of $3100-$4000 and
$4100-$5000 were both given to 7 students (14%). The allowance of over $5000 is
allocated to 6 (12%) students which means that it is 1 less than the standard
amount. Last but not least, under $1000 is the least amount given to students in
grade 11 with a total of 5 students (10%).
The fourth figure presents how much money is being spent on this weekly
allowance. It was apparent that 30% spend below $1000, while most students
(42%) spend from $1000-$2000. 20% of students spend from $2100-$3000 and
there is a drastic decrease in percentage as only 6% of students spend from $3100-
$4000 and 2% spend $4100-$5000. No students spend above $5000 of their
weekly allowance.
Based on the results displayed, it can be concluded that out of the fifty grade 11
students surveyed; 46 of the total students (92%) spend $1000-$2000 daily from
their weekly allowance, 3 of them (6%) spend $2100-$3000 while only one of
them (2%) spend more than $5000 daily on food and beverages at the school’s
canteen. No one spends $3100-$5000 daily.
Discussion of Findings
Fifty fifth form students were given a questionnaire about their spending habits and
preferences at the canteen. Every student interviewed purchases something from
the canteen as most of them go often. They buy a wide range of different products
with the most popular being chicken and chips and no one bought cake and
pastries.
According to the research; it was noticed that most students spend most of, if not
all of their weekly allowance considering the majority receives $2100-$3000
weekly, and they spend that amount. From this amount, students usually spend
from within the range of $1000-$2000 daily. Understandably, students do not
receive more than $5000 weekly as almost no one spends within that range in a
week.
Conclusion
Students on average mostly spend from $1000-$2000 daily of their weekly
allowance. Likewise, it was also observed that the most weekly allowance
allocated to students ranges from $2100-$3000, this is 26% of the students
questioned.

Appendices
Dear Students,
The researchers are currently CSEC students and as a requirement; they have to
complete a research project to aid in the completion of our Mathematics SBA. The
title of our research project is "An investigation into the amount of money spent on
food at the canteen by students of Grade 11."
For the researchers to complete this research they have to collect information about
the prices of food at the canteen and how much money is spent by the Grade 11
students.
If you agree to participate in this process, your participation is completely
voluntary and your responses will remain anonymous and confidential. If you
decline to participate or choose not to complete the questionnaire, the researchers
will not inform anyone of your decision and no foreseeable negative consequences
will result.
Please answer the questions as best as you can. It should take you approximately
five (5) minutes to complete.
Thank you for taking the time to assist the researchers in their
research/investigation.
Yours sincerely,
Shalini Deokumar
