FOREWORD

The Punjab Vocational Training Council (PVTC) was established in June 1998.
The objective was to give need based demand driven technical training to enhance
government noble endower of poverty alleviation. For this purpose PVTC has
developed curricula for various courses to cope with the growing demand of
industrial, agriculture, medical and services sector, keeping in view the modern
technology.

Basic health facilities and family planning is the important issue and need of day.
The population explosion is affecting financial resources in one hand and health
problems in the other. So the training in the health sector is vital for creating
cautiousness in public. That is why “Clinical Assistant” course is being introduced
by the PVTC.

These curricula have been prepared with active participation of Board of


Management (BOMs) and instructional staff of VTIs, keeping in view the latest
technological development in the field. It will serve the purposes of providing
guidance and direction to the instructional staff of VTIs to impart uniform and
standardized training.

TRAINING
PROGRAMME
The Clinical Assistant provides day-to-day staff, logistical, and administrative assistance
to a medical clinic, hospital unit, or clinical trials program. Triages patients and schedules
appointments; screens and refers phone calls, and communicates and interacts with
patients; provides clerical and staff support to the unit, and assists with clinical and/or
laboratory procedures as required.

1. Needs / Objectives / Duties

1. Receives, screens, interviews, and registers patients or clinical research subjects;


takes and records vital signs, as appropriate to clinic operations.
2. Answers telephone inquiries from patients and others; screens calls to determine
nature and urgency of inquiry, refers calls as appropriate, and/or schedules
appointments with practitioners; instructs patients as needed regarding
administrative and/or logistical procedures.
3. Obtains patient histories, and insurance approvals as appropriate; prepares and
updates medical charts and associated records.
4. Arranges for prescribed laboratory tests, specialist referrals, and/or diagnostic
procedures; orders, and may transport, drugs and/or other prescribed patient care
aids as directed; performs or assists in the performance of basic clinical and/or
laboratory procedures, as appropriate to the activities of the unit.
5. Collects, verifies, records, and maintains data on clinical activity and/or research;
prepares associated reports as required.
6. Orders and maintains inventories of supplies, as required to support day-to-day
unit clinical and administrative operations.
7. Assists in maintaining the cleanliness and serviceability of unit facilities and
equipment; arranges for maintenance and repair as needed.
8. May supervise and/or lead lower graded staff and/or student employees.
9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
10. Assists lactation consultant with treatments, examinations, and minor procedures.
11. Instructs patients concerning treatment.
12. Records patients’ information on appropriate form.
13. Makes presentations to groups.
14. Participates in health fairs for the program.

2. Skill Requirements

After completing this course the students will learn these skills:

1. Able to exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperature, dirt, dust,


fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and / or loud noises.
2. Able to do light physical efforts, handling of average weight objects upto 10 kg or
some standing or walking.
3. Carry out doctor’s instructions regarding comfort, environment and cleanliness of
the patient.
4. Take and record body temperature, pulse and blood pressure.
5. Give medicines and diet to the patients as advised.
6. Dress minor wounds.
7. Give intravenous and intramuscular injections.
8. Give first aid in emergencies.
9. Sterilize instruments and other materials used in medical practice.
10. Perform basic laboratory tests and assist in conducting special diagnostic
procedures.
11. Prepare and dispense the prescriptions.

inventory control.

7. Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques.
8. Receptionist skills.
9. Ability to interact and communicate with people over the telephone, often in
stressful situations.
10. Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures.
11. Ability to supervise and train assigned staff.
12. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
13. Elementary structure of human body and function of its various organs and
systems.
14. Nursing procedures.
