TYPES OF THESIS STATEMENTS

The kind of thesis statements you write will depend on the type of paper you are writi ng.
ARGUMENTATIVE THESIS STATEMENT

Making a claim

An argumentati ve thesis states the topic of your paper, your positi on on the topic, and
the reasons you have for taking that positi on.

Example: Technology has decreased our level of connecti ons to others because it allows
us to disconnect from the people in our physical environment and it does not foster the
social skills needed in order to help us connect to those around us.

ANALYTICAL THESIS STATEMENT

Analyzing an issue

An analyti cal thesis states the topic of your paper, what specifi cally you analysed, and the
conclusion(s) your reached as a result of that analysis.

Example: An analysis of alternati ves to fossil fuel energies indicates that a bett er opti on
us the use of solar and wind power.

EXPOSITORY THESIS STATEMENT

Explaining a topic

An expository thesis statement states the topic of your paper and lists the key aspects of
your topic that will be discussed in the paper.

Example: Factors related to student success include eff ecti ve ti me management,


moti vati on, and family support.

NARRATIVE THESIS STATEMENT

Narrati ng the overall theme

A narrati ve’s thesis statement is not exactly like the thesis statements used in the
previously menti oned ones.

The thesis statement for a narrati ve essay does not outline the whole essay. Instead, it
should convey the overall theme of the narrati ve or a lesson learned.

Example: Our family vacati on within which we went to Boracay was dull and, most
notably, painful.

Structure of an Academic Text

In the introducti on, you present to the reader what the text will be about. You can do this
with phrases such as The purpose is to discuss… or  In the text I will argue for….  Such
formulati ons prepare the reader for what the text will be about and makes it easier to
read.

In the main body of the text, you do what you say you will do in the introducti on. For
example, you can present your arguments and develop your reasoning around them. The
main body of a text consists of paragraphs that describe and develop the topic introduced
in the introducti on. Here you weave in references to your course literature and other
relevant sources that substanti ate and support your statements and any discussion that
you may have.

In the conclusion, summarize what you have done in the text. Remind the reader what
the purpose of the text was by using phrases such as  The purpose was to ... or In this text
I have described and discussed.

Topic Sentence

A topic sentence is a sentence, someti mes at the beginning of a paragraph, that states or
suggests the main idea (or topic) of a paragraph.

The topic sentence acts as a kind of summary, and off ers the reader an insightf ul view of
the writer’s main idea. However, a topic sentence oft en provides a claim or an insight
directly related to the thesis.

What is a patt ern of development?

Are strategies in writi ng that aids the writer in organizing their ideas in order for the text
to be understood easily by the readers.

Why do we need it?

As we have known that eff ecti ve communicati on begins with a clearly organized set of
ideas following a logical consistent patt ern, it is important to identi fy the author's
perspecti ve and discover the way the message is being sent.

What is a graphic organizer?

A graphic organizer is a visual and graphic display that depicts the relati onships between
facts, terms, and or ideas.

Why is a graphic organizer essenti al?

It is essenti al because the more you understand them the easier for you to write diff erent
patt erns of development in determining the patt erns of development.

Graphic organizers can help to visualize and construct ideas, organize and/or sequence
informati on, plan what to write, increase reading comprehension, brainstorm, organize
problems and soluti ons, compare and contrast ideas, show cause and eff ect, and more.

In a text you should consider the SIGNALING WORDS

- are specifi c words that you can use to transiti on between the diff erent ideas in your
paper clearly and organically.

- Signal words are used in determining the patt erns of development of ideas in a text.
These signal words are also known as transiti onal devices that help identi fy the patt ern
but it is more important that the reader understands the meaning of the text.
