The 11 habits of an effective teacher were an eye-opener for me as they helped me to

understand the ways I should adopt to become an effective teacher. I always believed that I
had all the qualities of an effective teacher. I thought an effective teacher loves children and
profession, completes the syllabus on time and grades the work of students. This article has
changed my perception and helped me to identify what I need to focus on in becoming a great
and effective teacher. I always believed that an effective teacher enjoys teaching. A person
can become a teacher only if that person loves to be with children and attitude toward
teaching. This is the reason why I took teaching as my profession. Another habit of an
effective teacher is to make the children feel secure and make them feel special. I always
follow this so that they feel safe and they can share anything with me if they are not well.
Spreading positivity through a smile was new learning for me from the article regarding the
effective teacher. Even though I always try to smile every day in class, there are days when I
am in a bad or sad mood and I won’t be able to smile at the students. I have realised that it
may affect the teaching-learning process. By reading the article, I realised that even though I
have bad, I should wear a mask and put a smile on my face to bring positivity to the class. As
a teacher, I always talk to the children during their free time to understand more about them
and also to understand their skills. When I started my teaching career, I always find it
difficult to talk to the parents but when my principal told me that it is always good to have a
rapport with the parents, I understood the importance of communication with parents. It is
also good to have a good to know other colleagues as well because they can always provide
support to us. When I started my teaching profession, I always gave 100% effort whether it
be delivering a lesson or helping any other teacher. Later I realised that I was not giving
100% effort to the work that I am doing. This article helped me to realise that to be an
effective teacher one has to give 100% effort to the work. This article also helped me to learn
that it is important to be organised and keep a planner or a journal. I usually jot down the
ideas in any notebook but to be an effective teacher it is important to jot down the ideas in a
journal or a planner. Classroom observation by other teachers/ HOD/principal is always a
scary moment for me. I always think that why should other teachers need to observe my
classes or why they have to criticise my teaching. The article helped me to learn that it is
always good to receive constructive criticism from other teachers because it helps a teacher to
improve the teaching process and to understand other different ways to learn a topic. Creating
standards for students and myself is also another learning for me. I had never thought about
this when it comes to becoming an effective teacher. Finding inspiration is an essential
quality of an effective teacher. I always look for ideas and inspiration from other websites
and resources as well so that I can plan my lessons in a better way. It is always good to
embrace change. Sometimes the lesson that a teacher plans for that particular day may not go
well as planned. I usually face this issue and will be frightened after thinking about the
completion of the syllabus. As an effective teacher, I learned that it is always important to
accept changes and move forward. An effective teacher should be reflective teaching
professional. An effective teacher should always think about what went wrong, what can be
done to make the class more engaging, etc. Reflection is very important to become an
effective teacher. Another important habitat to becoming an effective teacher is time
management.
