EXPLAIN
ACTIVITY 1: DECIPHERING NATIONALISTIC LINES
1. You review your understanding about the concepts of nation, nationalism and patriotism.

2. You interpret the selected lines of the characters of the Noli and Fili; and expound whether the
characters manifest nationalism or just mere patriotism. Explain why.

a. “... So they refuse to integrate you into the Spanish nation. So much the better! Take the lead in
forming your own individuality, try to lay the foundations of a Filipino nation... If they refuse to teach
you their language, then cultivate your own. Make it more widely known, keep alive our native culture
for our people, and instead of aspiring to be a mere province, aspire to be a nation...”

-According to this passage of the book, the Filipino people is recognized as a nation severally of the
Spanish Empire. With its own language and culture, the Filipino country will stand alone. Even within the
absence of the Spanish government, it's still a nation. I believe that this line exemplifies nationalism. The
message is that the Filipinos ought to rise for his or her rights as a nation, fight for them, and never bend
for acceptance as a spanish people.

b. “Ah, he too would like to die, to become nothing, to leave to his country a glorious name, to die for
her, defending her against foreign invaders, and let the sun afterwards shine on his dead body, an
immovable sentinel on the rocks of the seal”

- This sentence refers to giving one's life in service to the nation. This, in my opinion, suggests
nationalism. By definition, patriotism entails a readiness to provide one's life in defense of the nation, as
illustrated during this specific sentence from the book.

c. "O yes, I yield to no one in my love of country and in my progressive ideas, but... I cannot commit
myself. I do not know whether or not you realize my position; it is very delicate… I have may interest…”

- I notice as I work to completely comprehend the statement that this remark could be a conflict
between one's objectives and people of his country. He cannot merely quit his aspirations for that,
regardless of how much he loves his nation. This illustrates patriotism.
