A brief history of education in El Salvador

Education as the greatest practice of freedom in the world, has transcended over the years
and this is the most important tools that the world has and for be more specific, is the most
important thing in El Salvador, the reason is easy, without education there is no progress
and without progress there is no future.

“La educación como práctica de la libertad, al contrario de aquella que es práctica de la

dominación, implica la negación del hombre abstracto, aislado, suelto, desligado del
mundo, así como la negación del mundo como una realidad ausente de los hombres. (Freire,
1965).”

El Salvador has been through many changes in all its history, but it’s necessary to do
emphasis in the things that are good, in the improvements and all the situations that have
had to overcome. As Freire (1964) said “Todos sabemos algo, todos ignoramos algo, por
eso aprendemos siempre.” The author of this phrase pointed out the importance of learning
constantly, in El Salvador we are witness to the importance of this, in the past, when
education was for a minority, when the children of indigenous people and settlers had no
right to be educated, something very important was discovered, that the strength of every
nation will always be society and if society is educated, the great elites fall.

It is necessary to understand and let the new generations know that education in the country
must transcend and continue to evolve, just as in the past, there were people with the
initiative to change and transform the reality of education, now we must continue fighting
For the same purpose, a fair and dignified education must continue to be sought, in order to
have a society free of ignorance. “Una sociedad sin educación es una sociedad sin futuro
(Velazquez, 2017).” In other words, if we do not consider education as the surest path to
liberation, we would be leaving aside the greatest opportunity to be able to overcome the
barriers that have stood in El Salvador for years.

Education is the basis of every society, but it is the most forgotten system in third world
countries, it is not thought that if you had an educated society you could stop investing in
other systems, an example is set, if there were a society educated, there would no longer be
hospitals and streets in poor condition due to the incorrect use of these by the user, and
more could be invested in schools worthy of the children of the country. However, honor is
given to the people who, over the years, fought for the educational rights that are now
enjoyed.

Third world education

The education needs to have more support about the tools and the opportunities,
somethings that allows the students develop the creativity and comprehend the world from
different perspectives, but in the first world countries, there is not just the tools and the
opportunities that have allowed them to have a better education, besides that they have
good habits as reading, this is part of their educations, it has become in entertaining, by the
contrary in the third world countries, people do not tend to read and investigate, which
does not allow to have a good education system.

Many time the public education sector, presents work stoppage, because of the low salary,
because of the environment, equipment, conditions, risk and demands, the result of this is
the bad education or school dropout, what affects the future of the society of the country,
besides that there are more factors such as the unconditional support of parents, work in
childhood because of the insufficient resources to have a integral education, free for non-
school task, comparing with the first world countries that only dedicated to studying,
playing and enjoying.

Educations right

Touching on the issue of national education and how it has evolved to or reaches all people
regardless of their economic condition or race, or can be argued that having access to an
integral education can change the course of a country.
The history tells that around the year 1770 in San Salvador there was not a school that
taught reading or writing; until the beginning of the 18th Century there were only 86
schools and 88 teachers, data that for the number of habitants, were not consistent.
Education was limited for a long Time and was only accessible to the wealthy people of the
country, giving continuity to the differences that already existed, this can be considered as a
stagnation of the direction of the nation, since there was a considerable number of illiterate
people. There Is not progress without education, as Mandela (2002) said: "La educación es

Over the Centuries, reforms were emerging in national education, which favored un aspects
such as: secularization of education, accessibility to all sectors of the country and the
expansion of educational issues, with this, the new educational era began, which has
favored the intellectual development, and consequently, the economic development of the
nation.

"La educación hace a la gente fácil de dirigir, pero difícil de manipular, fácil de gobernar,
pero imposible de esclavizar (Brougham, 1860)."

Education for transform

Education transforms lives, promotes peace, alleviates poverty and promotes sustainable
development. There is no doubt in this sense that education is a human right destined to
improve our lives, and therefore, access to quality education must be universal. Education
is a tool that allows the removal of children and adults from society and the economy to
escape poverty and full participation in the life of society.
Education to transform is an open and continuous social learning process that facilitates the
development of critical, responsible and committed citizens at an individual and collective
level, building a fair and more equitable society in a sustainable environment. “La
educación no cambia el mundo, cambia a las personas que van a cambiar el mundo (Freire,
1965)”
It is developed through full and free lifelong learning, in any educational field, based on the
teaching of human values that promote respect, solidarity and appreciation. It promotes
diversity, multiculturalism and the environment, fosters a spirit of criticism, analysis and
reflection, and is a supportive educational practice that promotes individual autonomy and
social responsibility to generate local action with a global vision.
Education is not and should not only be emancipation, but this emancipation must also be
understood as the ability to "humanize" the person. “El objetivo de la educación es la virtud
y el deseo de convertirse en un buen ser humano (Platon).”
To conclude, it is thought that the traditional vision of education and the role of each
component in the process should be changed. We need to create an educational model that
frees people without changing them. Necessarily, a type of pedagogy would have to be
built on the clear basis of the philosophical conception of reality and of man himself.
