The current doctoral thesis is a contribution made from psychology, more

specifically from the cognitive neuropsychology framework, which considers
that cognitive decline in third age is the common factor of the main

neurodegenerative disorders linked to age, and that application of programs
that prevent and/or delay its onset and development in elderly people is Preview
increasingly necessary.

Because of that, the main goal of the current research has been the
development and implementation of a cognitive stimulation program (namely,
"Memory Gym") in order to maintain and/or improve cognitive performance of
a series of residentialized age 65 or older elderly people showing symptoms
of cognitive decline. These elderly men and women were living at the
Residence of La Loma, in Samano, Castro-Urdiales (Cantabria), Spain.

Hypotheses for this research state that people with cognitive decline, treated
by means of the cognitive stimulation program known as Memory Gym,
maintain and/or improve their cognitive performance, more than those people
not treated, in their global cognitive functioning and in various specific
cognitive functions.

With this purpose, sample was divided in two groups (Experimental Group
and Waiting List Control Group). After pre-treatment assessment for both
groups, intervention started by means of the implementation of Memory Gym
program with the Experimental Group, and finished with the pertinent
posttreatment assessment for both groups.

Statistical analyses of obtained results show that treated persons improve

their abstract reasoning abilities in a significant way, more than not treated
persons. In addition to this, maintenance and improvement of cognitive
performance is greater in the Experimental Group, from both statistical and
clinical points of view, for the global cognitive functioning, as well as for more
specific functions as Orientation, Perception and Attention, Memory,
Language, Abstract Reasoning and Visual Motor Coordination.
