Brief History
• The Faculty of Education was founded in 1963 by next year the faculty will be 60 years anniversary.
• Firstly offered the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (DPP) to graduates who chose to enter the teaching profession.
• Upgraded to the status of faculty in July 1965. The Master of Education (M.Ed) programme was introduced for the first time
two years later and this was followed by the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programme in 1969.
• Since its establishment, the Faculty of Education has successfully trained almost 20,000 graduates. From among them, more
than 15,000 have graduated with the Diploma in Education (DPP), more than 2,282 with a Masters degree and about 3,500
with a Bachelor in Education degree.
• 1970, the structure of the Faculty comprised five divisions. However, because of new developments and
paradigm shifts in the educational system.
• The latest organizational restructuring was carried out in 2001 until 2020 resulting in the formation of the
following departments;
• Department of Educational Foundations and Humanities
• Department of Language and Literacy Education
• Department of Educational Psychology and Counselling
• Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology
• Department of Mathematics and Science Education
• Department of Educational Management, Planning and Policy with Institute of Educational Leadership join
in 2020.
Undergraduate Program
• 1975 – Bachelor of Science with Education joint program with Faculty of Science
• 1982 - Bachelor of Education Islamic Education joint program with Academy of Islamic Studies
• 1985 – Bachelor of Education Teaching English as Second Language (TESL)
• 1997 – Bachelor of Early Childhood Education
• 1998 – Bachelor of Counselling
• 2000 - Bachelor of Education (Teaching of Tamil Language) the program closed in 2004.
Post-Graduate Program: Overview
• The Faculty of Education has embarked on a mission to enhance its role as a centre for higher degrees in education. The
Faculty aims to produce more postgraduate educators to meet the demands of a dynamic education system.
• With the present academic staff strength of nearly 100 members compared to only five in 1963, the Faculty can proudly claim
to have a pool of talented expertise with the ability to make greater contributions to development in the field of education.
• The Faculty of Education has one of the largest number of postgraduate students pursuing either the Master or PhD degrees
at the Universiti Malaya.
• While most of these graduate students are Malaysians, there are also postgraduate students who come from foreign
countries like Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Algeria, Libya, Thailand, Brunei, Fiji, Sri Lanka, the Cook Islands, Samoa, China and several
African countries.
• With the presence of international students, the exposure and training received is enriching as students are able to share their
diverse experiences and views.
The Faculty of Education offers many fields of study for the
Post-Graduate Diploma in Education that been taught in coursework.

7. Mathematics Education 1. Only open to those who has Bachelor Degree
8. Computer Science Education not related to Education/Teaching.
