Introduction

Agriculture is the backbone of the Kenyan economy and contributes significantly to the GDP of
the country. It contributes approximately 33% of Kenya’s GDP. More than 40% of the workforce
and 70% of the rural population are employed in the agricultural sector. However, over the
recent years we have seen a stagnation in agricultural productivity. Agribusinesses and small
holder farmers still have difficulties expanding their operations and raising the quality of their
produce.

Additionally, goal two in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aims to attain zero
hunger. This goal aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote
sustainable agriculture. It acknowledges the connections between promoting sustainable
agriculture, empowering small farmers, ending rural poverty, promoting healthy lifestyles, and
combating climate change.

Zero Hunger Hydroponics Farm therefore seeks to solve the problem of food insecurity through
the new technology of hydroponics. The produce of the farm will be high quality, nutritious and
fairly priced. The produce will also be accessible throughout the year as it is not dependent on
large tracts of land. Hydroponics is a more sustainable way of farming and will aid in solving
some of the agricultural challenges.

Problem Statement

There are various challenges facing the agricultural sector in Kenya. One of these challenges is
the poor adoption of new technology by the farmers which minimizes the amount of potential
productivity. Another challenge is the climate changes occurring across the globe which has
effect on the land and agricultural productivity. Semi-arid areas are in danger of turning in to arid
areas and those that were arid are so dry that no agricultural practice can be considered. Finally,
another challenge is the soil nutrients are depreciating. Due to the growing populations, there is
less land to be farmed therefore the soil is exploited because there is less downtime in between
new crops being planted.

Additionally, the current drought (2020–2022) has been the worst and longest one yet, resulting
in extensive livelihood losses and significant population displacement. More than 4.2 million
individuals are currently experiencing severe acute food insecurity, with over 2.7 million
individuals living in the Crisis phase and 785,000 individuals in the Emergency state. This is a
10% from 2021.
