PREFACE
It is categorically stated in Romans 2:14 that the
Law was given only to the Jews. According to
Romans 3:2, it was the Jews who were entrusted
with the oracles of God, His very words; the Old
Testament promises. But God the Son came in the
flesh as Jesus of Nazareth to ratify with His blood a
New Covenant which has been enacted with better
promises – Matthew 26:28; Hebrews 8:6. It was
from Christ Jesus that the Church was birthed. So
the million-dollar question is: What has the Law
go to do with the Church?

What's Law gottta to do, gotta do with it? What's Law

but a second-hand covenant (Hebrews 8:13)! Who
needs the Law which we're sure to have broken
(Romans 3:23; James 2:10)?

According to 1 Corinthians 10:32, when Elohim

looks upon the earth, He sees three groups of
people:
1. Jews – given the Law and governed by it;
2. Gentiles – do not have the Law but guided by
conscience;
3. Church – led by the Holy Spirit.

It is the will of God the Father for all to be reconciled
to Him as His beloved children in the Body of Christ;
the Church, with no distinction between Jews and
Gentiles – John 6:29; Romans 10:12, Galatians
3:26-29; Ephesians 1:4-5.

- Governed by the Law

Church
- Led by the Holy Spirit

Gentiles

Law & Grace
"Grace and truth came in the Person of Jesus Christ"
– John 1:17.

Grace came in the Person of Jesus to make sinners

the righteousness of God; examined by and
approved of God – 2 Corinthians 5:21.

The Law was given to make people conscious of the

sinfulness of sin; revealing sin and demanding
obedience. By this consciousness comes the sense
of condemnation which kills – 2 Corinthians 3:6-9;
Galatians 3:19.

God the Son came in the flesh as Jesus of Nazareth

to fulfill the obedience as demanded by the Law and
also to be cursed under the Law– Matthew 5:17;
Romans 10:4; Galatians 3:13. It is in Christ that the
righteousness of God is granted to those who
believe in Him as Savior – Romans 10:4.

Blessings are on the head of the righteous and the

prayers of the righteous accomplish much –
Proverbs 10:6, James 5:16.

The Righteousness of God
What is the
righteousness of God?
When God examines a “God saw everything that He

believer through the lens had made, and behold, it was

very good and He validated it
of Christ crucified, He
completely. And there was
approves of and validates evening and there was
the same as very good morning, a sixth day.”
just as He did when all
creation was completed –
Genesis 1:31.

The Flesh & Temptation
The Flesh
It refers to the part of the human nature that is
attracted to what appeals to the physical senses
such that seeing is believing.

"And when the woman saw that the tree was good for
food, and that it was delightful to look at, and a tree to be
desired in order to make one wise and insightful, she took
some of its fruit and ate it; and she also gave some to her
husband with her, and he ate."
- Genesis 3:6

When Eve chose, and by her Adam, to go by sight

and not the Word of God, that became an intrinsic
part of the human nature. Instead of living by faith in
the Word of God, mankind degenerated to the level
of living by sight. With that, the human race became
unrighteous - Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11,
Hebrews 10:38.

https://alephtavsermons.blogspot.com/ | 05
Humankind was created to live by every word of God
- Deuteronomy 8:3. That was our right-standing
before God.

God the Son came in the flesh to reveal how far we

have fallen from our rightful state of being - Matthew
4:4. He also demonstrated that the word of God is
gracious:

"And [as He continued on] they all were speaking well of

Him, and were in awe and were wondering about the
words of grace which were coming from His lips; and they
were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”"
- Luke 4:22

God the Father has given God the Son a Body

(soma) to capture the flesh (sarx) so as to nail it
(sarx) to the Cross – Hebrews 10:5-7. The flesh
(sarx) has no power over me unless I give it the time
of day.

Christ crucified epitomized the grace and love of

God the Father!

Temptation
Sinners sin just as cows moo and cats meow.
Hence, sinners need not be tempted to sin because
sinners sin.

Cows are not tempted to moo and neither cats

tempted to meow. That is what they do!

It is the bona fide believer who will be tempted to sin

because sin goes against the very grain of the new
nature. According to James 1:13-15, believers are
tempted when they are attracted to what appeals to
the physical senses; dragged away, enticed and
baited to commit sin by the worldly desire, lust
or passion. When a believer succumbs to sin, the
same is subject to the effects of death (which is a
consequence of sin) that includes inter-alia,
sicknesses, infirmities, stress, worry, anxiety,
frustration, and even premature physical death.

One cannot choose to sin and not bear its

consequence (s).

Holiness & Sanctification
Sanctification is the process of walking out the
holiness that Christ Jesus has died to give us.

In this fallen world where Satan is god, death reigns

– Romans 5:17; 2 Corinthians 4:4. Death is
common. It refers to the decaying process of wear-
and-tear, fatigue, stress, worry, anxiety, sicknesses,
infirmities and finally physical death and eternal
separation from God.

To be holy is to be separated from what is common.

The indwelling Holy Spirit will lead the believer into
separation from what is common.

When I realize how damaging sin is to me, what
incentives are there for me to continue in it? Then I
consider the benefits that God has given me in
Christ Jesus. The choice becomes a no-brainer! In
the words of Romans 6:20-21:

“When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to

righteousness [you had no desire to conform to God’s
will]. So what benefit did you get at that time from the
things of which you are now ashamed? [None!] For the
outcome of those things is death!”

Nip sin in the bud and let it not fester!

Why be like Pharaoh who asked to stay one more

day with the plague of the frogs (Exodus 8:9-10)?

The War
It is emphatically mentioned in Galatians 5:17 that
the flesh (sarx) and the Holy Spirit are in direct
opposition to each other. In other words, a bona fide
believer will be engaged in a war! When that believer
falls into sin, the same is caught as if in an ambush –
Galatians 6:1.

The way to not satisfy the cravings of the flesh is to

walk by the Spirit Who bears witness to the Word of
God, which is God-breathed – Galatians 5:16; 2
Timothy 3:16.

What makes sin tantalizing is the pleasures it offers.

However, it produces no benefit but death –
Romans 6:20-23. When we focus our thoughts on
the sensual pleasures that come with sin, we fall
headlong into it. However, when we consider the
harm it does to us, sin loses its appeal – Romans
6:20-21.

Sometimes, true repentance can only come when a

person gets badly burnt by sin - 1 Corinthians 5:5.

https://alephtavsermons.blogspot.com/ | 10
We are called to resist sin and the devil – Hebrews
12:4; James 4:7. This is to spare us from the
unnecessary heartaches from giving in to sin.

When we chose to sin not, it is for our own benefit,

not God's. For this reason, God is pleased when we
sin not because sin is destructive to say the least.
God the Father loves us so much that it grieves Him
when we allow sin to cause us harm.

Hence, we stand our ground firmly rooted in the

Word of God.

AFTERWORD
So what has the Law got to do with the Church?

It:
1. Enables me to appreciate the gift of salvation so
much the more;
2. Helps me to value God the Son crucified in the
flesh as Jesus of Nazareth;
3. Defines sinful behaviors;
4. Reveals the severity of sin in that it requires the
death and blood of God the Son as payment;
5. Evokes gratitude for not being under the Law
but grace.

Love fulfills the Law and love does no harm to its

neighbor – Romans 13:8-10. By and large, sin is
about gratifying self-interests at the expense of
others and self-interests are motivated by the flesh
(sarx); the intrinsic part of human nature that is
attracted to what appeals to the physical senses.

https://alephtavsermons.blogspot.com/ | 12
With the flesh (sarx) having been nailed to the
Cross in and with Christ Jesus, we have the choice
to let it be dead or otherwise.

"Never mind lah, since the blood of Jesus continually

cleanses me from all sins, I will indulge in this sin just one
time – 1 John 1:7."

This one time will lead to a second, third and many

more times. Hence, do not use your freedom as a
pretext to sin – Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 2:16.

We stand firm on the choice to let the flesh (sarx)

be dead and the Holy Spirit will bear witness to it by
signs and wonders. By standing firm on that choice
is to stand firm in faith – Ephesians 6:13.

The Church is made up of Gentiles predominantly. Even
Jews who belong to the Body of Christ realized that
justification is not by the works of the Law but by grace
through faith in Christ. So what is the hype about the Law
in the Church? In other words, what has the Law got to do
with the Church?

As an analogy, the Law as a husband is dead. The

woman (Church) is now married to another husband,
Jesus the Christ, and she belongs to Him, the new
husband – Romans 7:1-4. Why talk about the dead
husband (Old Covenant) when the new loving husband
(New Covenant) is alive and kicking (Ephesians 5:25)?

What's Law gottta to do, gotta do with it? What's Law but
a second-hand covenant (Hebrews 8:13)! Who needs the
Law which we're sure to have broken (Romans 3:23;
James 2:10)?

Is this antinomian? Certainly not! We confirm and

establish and uphold the Law for the reason it was given;
to convicts us all of sin and point to the need for salvation
that is only found in Christ crucified – Acts 4:12; Romans
3:31.

This booklet examines the role of the Law in the Church.
