PandaGlobal’s Tweet

On May 22, 2022, PandaGlobal, a community dedicated to fighting games, tweeted about

how they were partnering with Nintendo of America to host the first officially licensed Super

Smash Bros Ultimate and Super Smash Bros Melee circuits. The post features all of the standard

components a tweet has and some of the not-so-common parts. For the common components, it

has the username, profile picture, their @, some text, the number of RTs, QTs, and likes.

However, Panda makes use of non-common components, such as the mention of a verified user,

a quoted tweet, and a formal tone, to demonstrate that this event is a sign of Nintendo finally

acknowledging its fanbase.

When announcing a collaboration, it's best to mention everyone that is involved in the

project, and Panda delivers on that front by mentioning the company they are working together

with. Nintendo has a reputation for destroying anything fans make related to their franchises, so

Panda announcing to the world that they would be partnering with Nintendo to host a tournament

is something no one expected. “Through our partnership with @NintendoAmerica, we are proud

to welcome the inaugural @PandaCup” (Panda). That is why they made sure to mention the

verified account of Nintendo of America. For a series as big as Smash Bros, mentioning the

company behind the series not only gives Panda credibility, but it ensures that the community

can confirm that the account mentioned is indeed the real account of Nintendo of America.

Quoting tweets is something not a lot of Twitter users utilize, the reason being that

Twitter offers other options that are much simpler. Retweets allow people to share things in the

app and replies allow them to share what they think within the tweet. The only reason to quote

tweets is to share the tweet along with what users think of it; that is why Panda decided to quote

the tweet Panda Cup made. “The first officially licensed North American circuit for Super Smash

Bros. Ultimate and Super Smash Bros. Melee is here.” (Panda Cup) “Through our partnership

with @NintendoAmerica…” (Panda). By quoting the tweet, not only do they show that this is the

first officially licensed Smash circuit, but they also mention that they are partnering with

Nintendo to make it happen. If Panda had only retweeted the post, they wouldn’t be able to tell

the community that they are joining up with Nintendo. Using a reply to mention Nintendo was

not the answer either because within a few hours the reply would have gotten lost among other

replies.

Announcing a partnership with a big company to make something that has not been done

before is something that can get people under some pressure, so it is important to remain formal

in how things are announced. “Through our partnership with @NintendoAmerica, we are proud

to welcome the inaugural @PandaCup” (Panda). The way PandaGlobal communicates the

message is in a perfectly formal manner; they did not add any unnecessary words or tried to hype

up the event more than it needs to. The quoted tweet is also written formally; “The first officially

licensed North American circuit for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Smash Bros. Melee

is here. Introducing the Panda Cup, starting June 2022. #PandaCup” (Panda Cup). By remaining

formal, they show that they are taking this seriously and make sure not to make a fool of

themselves in front of a big company. Twitter is an app where people attack others for the

smallest of reasons, so if they had not remained formal or made some kind of typo, it is most

likely that someone would have made fun of them.

In conclusion, Panda makes use of non-common components of Twitter to inform its

audience about the big collaboration that they are having with Nintendo. First, by mentioning the

verified account of Nintendo of America; they can demonstrate that they are working with the

company behind the game series. Next, by making use of the quote tweet function; they are able

to further share the original announcement of the tournament, and mention who they are working

with. Finally, by using a formal tone; they not only show how serious they are about the event

but make sure they are not making a fool of themselves in front of a big company. In the end,

Panda is able to bring these three components together to deliver an announcement that doesn’t

say any unnecessary comments or leaves out important information; making sure the audience

knows all there is to know.
