Restaurant Evaluation & Critique (50 points + 20 points for discussion)

You are expected to visit, dine at, and evaluate a full service or quick service restaurant and to
write up your observations and perceptions in a short paper.

You may go to a quick service or a full service restaurant.

Your critique must be of a complete meal.

The critique should be written as a paper with headings and in paragraph form. Generally it
should be approximately two to three pages in length, but there is not a length limitation. The
restaurant’s appearance, service, and atmosphere should be described in detail. Every food item
ordered should be evaluated for appearance and taste and presentation. Your critique must be
typed in 12 point font and double spaced. Have some fun with this paper, but be sure to answer
all of the following:

Use the following as headings, write in complete sentences, and include the following items.

Specifically your evaluation should include a description each of the following:


1. The name and location of the restaurant
2. The date and time of your visit
3. The type of restaurant
4. The theme of the restaurant (you decide and tell why)

And a description and an evaluation of each of the following:


5. The outside appearance of the restaurant
6. The parking facilities
7. The greeting area/entrance
8. The inside appearance of the restaurant
9. The restrooms
10. The overall atmosphere (the ambiance)
11. The appearance of the table
12. Staffing—Who is working where? How does it appear to be working?
13. Cleanliness of:
Restaurant, facilities, table, dishes, employees, utensils
14. The food:
Describe the menu—its appearance and offerings in detail
What does the menu look like? What meals do they offer? What are the food items
available? What are their specialty items?
What is innovative or standard fare? (And why?)
Describe the food ordered in detail--Appearance, taste, presentation, etc.
Tell exactly what you ordered and if dining with a companion describe his
or her dishes, too
15. The service: When you enter--When you are first seated--While you are eating--
After your meal
16. Overall comments:
Your recommendation//would you go again? Why or why not?

Would you tell others to go? Why or Why not? Do you see evidence of sustainability—
such as the use of locally, grown foods, and other “green” practices? If so, what are they? If
not what practices might you recommend and why?
