Four Skinny Trees

RL 10.2: Determine a theme of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of
the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details.

Directions: After finishing “Four Skinny Trees” (74), read the poem “The Rose That Grew From
Concrete” below by Tupac Shakur. There are several connections between Esperanza’s
telling of vignette and this poem. Can you find them? Answer each question in complete
sentences.

1) The word “autobiographical” appears underneath the title of the poem. Why
do you think Shakur (poet) added the word autobiographical to the title of
the poem?

the author used the word “autobiographical” because they have seen something
similar to a rose between concrete. the used this word so readers understand that
they dealt with something like this.

this?

it learned how to walk without having feet and learned how to breathe fresh air.

the same thing?
the “rose” in the “four skinny trees” are the trees themselves. they represent her
hopefulness.

4) What does the concrete symbolize? Find the sentence in “Four Skinny Trees”
that connects to this same idea.
the concrete symbolizes something holding it down and not letting it move. in the
passage of “four skinny trees” the roots are the concrete holding the trees down.

5) Lastly, create a theme statement that could apply to both pieces. Support it
by using a direct quote from both “The Rose That Grew From Concrete” and
“Four Skinny Trees”.

the theme statement is ''objects can bring warmth in people hearts.'' the texts say
"long live the rose that grew from concrete when no one else ever cared''."they
are the only ones who understand me. i am the ones that understands them four
skinny trees.'' this shows that these two object fascinates and brings warmth to
these authors.
