CONNECTING

Getting Set Up
1. Download HF-Impulse from the HydraForce Electronics Portal at www.hydraforce.com/electronics. This
software communicates via Wi-Fi with the ECAN-

Note: www.hydraforce.com/electronics is a secure portal. Register if you do not already have a user ID and
password. Registration is handled automatically if you use a company e-mail address.

2. Unzip the file after downloading. Run HfImpulse.Installer.msi to install.

Establishing a Connection
3. Using your power supply and harness, power up the ECAN‑1. A CAN connection is not necessary for
setup. You can connect another CAN device on the ECAN‑1 CAN bus now or after configuring the
device.
4. Once the ECAN‑1 is flashing green, you may connect to it using your PC’s Wi-Fi connection. Go to your
wireless settings as if you are changing wireless routers. Select the device that begins with ECAN‑1 and
click connect. No password is necessary. This may take longer than usual because your computer will
try to connect to the internet. Give it an extra minute and it will connect. It will also say no internet even
though you are connected. This is expected. You are now connected to the ECAN‑1.

Note: If you do not have a wired connection, you will lose your connection to the internet. Later in this document,
it will be explained how you can keep your connection to the internet by connecting the ECAN‑1 to your wireless
router that provides internet and connecting your PC to the same wireless router.

Getting Started with the ECAN‑1 and HF-Impulse

5. Start HF-Impulse.
6. From the Welcome screen select New Project, then select the HydraForce ECU or ExDR you plan on
connecting to with the ECAN‑1
7. Select a preset Project Type if necessary.
8. Select Communication to view the Communication Screen. It should look something like:

ECAN‑1 User Manual
9. Under Communication Device|USB to CAN Adapter change the device to ECAN‑1

10. Near the File and Controller tab near the top left, a new tab ECAN‑1 should appear. Select this tab.

Note: If you wish to go online with your controller using the ECAN‑1, you may do so without selecting this tab. This
tab is where you can change the security and other settings of the ECAN‑1 if you wish. If you go this route, you may
skip ahead to section 4 Going Online With Your Controller.

11. In order to change any settings on the ECAN‑1, you must first connect. Select the Connect button.

12. A Log On dialogue box appears. Click Ok to connect. The Connect, Read, and Write buttons should all
become opaque.

Note: You must be connected this way to be able to change any ECAN‑1 settings. When you wish to Log On to the
controller of your choice, you must disconnect from the ECAN‑1 from the same Connect button. Then, switch back
to the controller’s tab with wcich you wish to go online and use the Log On button from that controller

DEVICE SETTINGS
After you have connected to the ECAN‑1 in HF-Impulse, select Device.

Baud Rate
Choose the baud rate your controller is communicating with.

Operating Mode
There are two choices: Mini AP, and Infrastructure. Under each type, the meaning of SSID changes. The
following text explains this.

Mini AP
Mini access point is used when you want to directly connect to the ECAN‑1. If you do not have a wired
connection, you will lose you internet connection with this setup.

SSID
The SSID of the ECAN‑1. That is the access point name you select when choosing a Wi-Fi connection.

Authentication Type
This is the type of security for the ECAN‑1 access point you are creating. By default, the ECAN‑1 has no
security settings. Depending on your application, this may not be desired. Anyone can connect to the
ECAN‑1. If security is an issue, you may choose WPA/WPA2 and use a password.

Infrastructure
Use this when the PC does not have a wired internet connection. This enables you to also access the internet
while connected to the ECAN‑1.

Note: You must have access to your wireless router’s settings to use the ECAN‑1 this way. You must be able to obtain
the IP Address that is assigned to the ECAN‑1. Without this information, it is impossible to connect to the ECAN‑1
through your wireless router.

SSID
The SSID of the network connecting the ECAN‑1 and your PC.

Authentication Type
This is the type of security for the network to which your PC and ECAN‑1 connect. This and the
accompanying security information must be correct for a connection to be established.

Note: There are other settings available to the ECAN‑1 but these are regarded to be advanced parameters. These
should only be used if the user knows a good deal of information about Wireless Networks. Otherwise, this setup
should be enough for general use.

Write Settings
Once you have setup your ECAN‑1 configuration, verify everything is correct. You may now Write your
settings to the ECAN‑1.

After clicking Write, you are prompted to save this configuration. It is best do so in case you forget
the password, IP address, or port number used with your device. After a successful Write, you will be
disconnected from the controller. You must power cycle the ECAN‑1 for the new settings to take effect.
Next, reconnect the ECAN‑1 through your wireless settings as if you are selecting another router. Depending
on the configuration you have chosen, you can connect to the configured router or directly to the ECAN‑1.
Use the Connect button to check your connection. If it fails to connect, check your wireless settings. If you
can’t reconnect, reset your ECAN‑1 as explained in RESET (CONNECTION LOST) on page 10.

GOING ONLINE WITH YOUR CONTROLLER
To go online with your ExDR or ECU, you should proceed as you normally do. That is, you click the button
when you are viewing the controller with HF-impulse and the ECAN‑1 selected as your communication
device on the communication screen.
If your ECAN‑1 has already been configured and you wish to go online with your controller after closing
down HF-Impulse or using a different computer, you need to go to the ECAN‑1 tab. From there you should
connect on the ECAN‑1 screens and modify the IP Address and Port Number. Or you can open the ICF file you
created when configuring the ECAN‑1.

Note: We do not reccommend connecting to the ECAN‑1 while trying to log on to your controller.

CODESYS COMMUNICATION
If you wish to use the ECAN‑1 with CoDeSys, you must have the latest gateway installer for CoDeSys installed
from the HydraForce Electronics Portal.
On the HF-Impulse ribbon under the ECAN‑1 module there is a button labelled Configure CoDeSys Gateway
(shown below). You must connect to the ECAN‑1 before configuring the CoDeSys gateway. This ensures you
have set up the correct IP Address and Port Number. Once you have connected to the ECAN‑1, you may click
the Configure CoDeSys Gateway button. Disconnect from the ECAN‑1 after you have done this.

Note: If you are using the ECAN‑1’s default settings for its IP Address and Port Number, you don’t need to use the
Configure CoDeSys Gateway button

Next you can open up your CoDeSys project and navigate to the Communication Parameters. This can be
found under Online|Communication Parameters. Change CAN card driver to ECAN1 as shown below. The you
may ignore the other settings in this window. Once this is done, you may go online with your ECU as you
normally would with CoDeSys.
