1. Introduction

Solid waste management and cleanliness are a rising issue in today’s time. It is important to find
a feasible solution to this problem as it has adverse effects on the health of the living beings and
the environment. The idea of different technologies and integrating them together can result in a
more smart, feasible and efficient solution.

In this world of environmental issues, people are getting more aware about the issue at hand.
Convectional waste management systems which are currently employed in India have static
routes and schedules where garbage from containers is collected on fixed schedules, regardless if
they are full or not. This type of situation is often seen at dustbins with no covers and no hygiene
control with improper collection methods by the collectors. This severely affects the health and
hygiene of the people.[1]

This problem can be solved using customized Global System for Mobile communication (GSM)
module is designed for wireless radiation monitoring through Short Messaging Service (SMS).
This module is able to receive serial data from radiation monitoring devices such as survey meter
or area monitor and transmit the data as text SMS to a host server.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) which refers to a wireless system that comprised of two
components: tags and readers. The reader is a device that has one or more antennas that emit radio
waves and receive signals back from the RFID tag. Tags, which use radio waves to communicate
their identity and other information to nearby readers, can be passive or active. This technology
can be used for attendance system for attendee who is appointed on duty for collection of garbage.
Thus, problem of garbage and carelessness can be solved with combination of these
technologies.[2]
2. Literature Survey
Many problems with respect to cleanliness are taking place in many countries and different
technologies have been introduced for handling solid waste management system. The researcher
have used ultrasonic sensors to measure the level of the waste in the dustbin which uses the
Arduino Mega microcontroller. Their module is powered by solar energy. The model uses a Wi-
Fi module (ESP8266) which sends data to a web server which is developed by the authors using
Bootstrap. The data sent is sent with a timestamp by the RTC module which also provides the user
with the location of the bin (latitude and longitude) by the use of a GSM module. The proposed
model attempts to provide the notification on a mobile app and to use NodeMCU board to reduce
the need of the Wi-Fi module. The model we propose attempts to send notifications to the
authorities directly without disrupting the peace and quiet of the environment.[3]

The smart bins have equipped with ultrasonic sensors. The level of the dustbin which being filled
up will be measured by these sensors. The container is divided into three levels. The sensors
receive the relevant data regarding levels when every time the garbage crosses a level.
Furthermore, by using GSM module, this data is sent to the garbage analyzer as instant message.
There may be several disadvantages such as increasing cost of the dustbin. Also, rough action and
usage of the user may cause damages to the sensors.[4]
3. Methodology
Flowchart

To design a “Smart Dustbin”, the lid will open automatically whenever it detects object nearby.
Ultrasonic sensor is used to detect the object and person. And for opening of lid Servo motor
is used. This dustbin is a GSM enabled bin which will automatically detects the garbage level
and sends message to respective municipal authorities updating the status of the bin. When
Dustbin gets filled, a message will be sent to the municipal corporation. When any garbage is
thrown outside the dustbin (within certain diameter) proximity sensor will sense the that
garbage. An alarm will ring for throwing that garbage in the dustbin. If someone still don’t
throw it in dustbin then automatically the door will be closed.
4. Advantages and Disadvantages
4(a). Advantages

Benefit to the Villages/Town:

• The overflowing and cleaning of smart bins can be continuously monitored and
effectively managed thus making clean and empty bins available to common
people.

• Cost effective once implemented properly.

• It also intends at building a clean as well as green surroundings.

Benefit to the Institute:

• Such kind of technological advancements in our Institution can promote National
level schemes launched by Government of India, like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,
Digital India etc.

4(b). Disadvantages

1. Costly at initial stage.

2. RFID tags are affected by surrounding metal & liquid.

6. Future Scope
The smart dustbin has made us move towards clean and green environments with hygiene
in surroundings, but in future, this project is successful only when there is coordination
among all dustbins in a locality so that a collection of waste from dustbin can be managed
systematically. When this coordination is established, an average of waste produce can be
monitored on regular basis that will help to find proper waste management techniques and
with this waste management will become easier & convenient. Customization of such kind
of techniques in colleges and schools can motivate students to think about the latest
innovation in technical domains and can boost their innovative mind. With the boost of
this project, movements like Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan will become realistic taking us to
next level.
