Invented the First Telephone


Bell reinvented the field of communications by creating the first
telephone. But years earlier, he struggled in school. Even though he
was gifted at problem solving, it's thought that he had trouble reading
and writing, possibly as a result of dyslexia. He was eventually
homeschooled by his mother. With her help, Bell learned to manage
Alexander Graham Bell
(1847- 1992) his challenges. And he went on to change the world.

The Best Selling Novelist in History


One of the most well-known authors of her time (and still today),
Agatha Christie always found writing and spelling very difficult. She
struggled with dysgraphia, which was so severe that she often couldn’t
read her own writing or balance her own checkbook. However, her
condition never stopped her from achieving anything and she has since

Notable Dutch Post-Impressionist painter


Many have speculated that Vincent van Gogh had Hypergraphia. They
exhibited many of the classic Hypergraphia characteristics.
Hypergraphia is a condition causing one to need to write continuously;
this disorder is commonly linked to mania and epilepsy. Some believe

Vincent Willem van Gogh that the massive collection of over 800 letters Van Gogh wrote during
(1853- 1890) his lifetime could be attributed to this condition. He was a famous artist

hyperfocus on his artwork, changing the way the world sees art.

Hence, The work of Vincent van Gogh exerted a powerful influence on


the development of much modern painting, notably Expressionism, in
particular on the works of the Fauve painters, Chaim Soutine, and the
German Expressionists.

Founder of Charles Schwab & Company

He is a discount brokerage who is now the leader in online trading. He


has dyslexia and still finds reading unbearable but has excelled through
the assistance of computers and dictation. He and his wife, Helen,
founded The Schwab Foundation for Learning to educate teachers
Charles Robert Schwab Sr. and parents on how to help children with learning difficulties.

Lawyer who fought for learning disabled and


dyslexic rights
Marilyn Bartlett Dyslexic woman won her eight-year fight to take the
state bar exam with a computer and other aids to help overcome her
disability. Manhattan federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor ruled that
Marilyn J. bartlett Marilyn Bartlett’s dyslexia qualified her as a disabled person under
LD: Dyslexia federal law – and therefore entitled to “accommodations” in taking the
bar exam.

A prolific author and a Feminist

Perhaps the most well known blind person was Helen Adams Keller (fig.
1), (June 27, 1880 - June 1, 1968), an American author, political activist,
and lecturer.

Helen Keller was the first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor of arts

LD: Hearing and Visual Impairment
A prolific author, Keller was well-traveled and outspoken in her
convictions. She was an advocate for people with disabilities, and
numerous other causes. The Deaf community was widely impacted by
her. She traveled to twenty-five different countries giving motivational
speeches about Deaf people's conditions.

She was a suffragette, pacifist, radical socialist, and birth control


supporter.
The 4th President of Indonesia
Abdurrahman Wahid born Abdurrahman ad-Dakhil; September 1940
– 30 December 2009), though more colloquially known as Gus Dur, was
an Indonesian politician and Islamic religious leader who served as the
4th president of Indonesia, from his election in 1999 until his removal

Abdurrahman Wahid from power in 2001. A long time leader within the Nahdlatul Ulama
LD: Visual Impairment organization, he was the founder of the National Awakening Party
(PKB). He was the son of Minister of Religious Affairs Wahid Hasyim,
and the grandson of Nahdatul Ulama founder Hasyim Asy'ari.

He had a visual impairment caused by glaucoma. He was blind on the


left eye and partially blind on his right eye. He was the first and as of
2022 the only president of Indonesia to have had physical disabilities.
