Finite
resources
• non-renewable
resources that cannot
be created or produced
once the original stores
are depleted, or those
that are used up at a
greater rate than nature
can replenish

• usually mined inorganic

substances with definite
chemical composition and
distinct physical properties
that are essential in the
production of products
required by humans

• presence in a particular
area is dependent on the
geological and
meteorological history of
that particular area

C&B Analysis of mining minerals

Area Benefits Cost
Social Local employment Loss of the cultural value of ancestral lands;
Locals do not have share of profit

Economic Additional revenues; Once minerals are depleted - no more

maintains national additional revenues
reserves
Environmental Loss of biodiversity; animal migration; heavy
metal/groundwater/soil pollution; soil
erosion; ecological imbalance;
deforestation; displacement of indigenous
people

• made from decomposing

plants and animals. These
fuels are found in the Earth's
crust and contain carbon and
hydrogen, which can be
burned for energy.

• Coal, crude oil, and natural

gas are all considered fossil
fuels because they were
formed from the fossilized,
buried remains of plants and
animals that lived millions of
years ago. Because of their
origins, fossil fuels have a
high carbon content.

Economic Additional revenues Loss of ecosystem services
Environmental Loss of biodiversity; increased soil

• It is among the most

traded food commodities,
and in the Philippines,
fisheries make an
important contribution to
sustainable incomes and
employment
opportunities.

• Fish represents around

20% of the animal protein
consumed worldwide.

SE&E Impact of overfishing

Area Impact
Social The unsustainable fishing practices and consequently
overfishing, collapse the aquatic resources. Without fish
production, fisheries are gone and fishermen loss their
livelihood.
Economic Overfishing leads to a decline in the population of productive
fish, which results in lesser stocking of the fish. Most often, it
would take years to revive the declining marine population.
Environmental Overfishing can destroy the environment and marine ecology
and completely disrupt the food chain.

• Not all resources are abundantly available in

the environment. Some of the resources are
finite and should be sustainably utilized.

• Essential finite resources in the Philippines

include mineral deposits, fossil fuels,
forests and fish supplies.

Key takeaways…..

• Unsustainable and unwise utilization of

available finite resources lead to resources
depletion that have detrimental social,
economic, and environmental effects.

• Food insecurity is measurable by global hunger

index that looks into the factors influencing it.
COVID19 illustrates how food security could be
crucial in addressing health issues.
