Lecture Title: James Webb Telescope Presentation

Name Of Presenter: Laura Sparks

Date: 10/13/22

Summary Of Presentation:

The main idea of this presentation was to explain the James Webb Telescope.

Laura Sparks of the Santa Rosa Junior College came and gave us an in depth

presentation that explained the James Webb Telescope as well as giving us a good idea

of how the telescope worked and what it is used for. She first explained that every

object in the solar system has a gravitational pull and that gravitational pull affects the

light which affects our view in the telescope. Gravitational lensing is when the light is

affected by gravity, light will wrap around large objects with a big gravitational pull. This

can mess up scientists and people who study using the telescope because this can

cause a planet that is behind the large object to appear as adjacent to it.

Different types of lights can be viewed using the telescope that our bare naked

eye can not see, an example of these lights are the infrared lights. Another thing that

was mentioned in the presentation was that if you look back at the planet from very far

away, you would be able to see back in time as if it were the present. The further away

you look from the planet, the more back in time you would be able to see since light

from that era of time would be the same light you would be seeing.
Reflection:

The presentation of the James Webb Telescope was very interesting to me because I

had never known that gravity can affect the way we view things and that gravity can pull light

itself, gravitational lensing had me very shocked because I had thought that what if all the things

we are seeing and learned about are all altered due to gravity? As the presentation continued I

had learned that the people had already taken this information and taken it into consideration. I

had particularly been fascinated by the fact that we could look directly back in time if we went

back far enough and looked back at Earth. Laura had mentioned that the telescope had also

allowed us to see past certain lights coming from objects, this means the things that we were

not able to see due to the light were now filtered out from the infrared.

NASA had released some new images from the new powerful space telescope called the

“James Webb Space Telescope”. The photo was released on July 11 at the White House, the

photos were of distant galaxies deeper in the cosmos than humanity has ever seen. Four

additional photos were later revealed on July 12, with one exception, the photos that were

shown could have been seen previously with other telescopes. What was special about the

photos that were shown was that the James Webb Space Telescope had revealed them in a

new way, the Webb Space Telescope used its distance away from the Earth, its sheer power,

and the use of infrared light spectrum to show the images in a way that was never before seen.

NASA Administrator says, “Every image is a new discovery and each will give humanity a view

of humanity that we’ve never seen before.” The Webb Space Telescope uses a new technology

called, “Infrared light spectrum”, to see through the cosmic dust to take better pictures of our

universe. Europe and Canada space agencies had joined NASA to help create the Telescope.
