Subject: Design Project of A Retaining Wall
Date: 07/17/2020

In this design project, we are assigned to design a gravity retaining wall for a
cohesionless sloped backfill with = 30 , and = 108 lb/f . The backfill i gi en a 20 f high
and has a slope of 10 . The g nd il f i e i a c he i e il i h c = 390 lb/ft² and = 20 .
The unit weight of ground soil is 115 lb/ ft³.

To design this gravity retaining wall, we first to assume and check the dimensions of
various components that can be used in the preliminary design.

Figure 1: Retaining Wall Dimension

Dimension Check:
H = 30
T = 5 = 1.52 m > 0.3 m √
Slope = 2:25 = 0.08 > 0.02 √
Ba e = 21 @ 0.5 H—0.7H √
B ied De h = 10 = 3 m > 0.6m √
Toe Wid h = 5 @ 0.12H—0.17H √
Heel Heigh = 5 @ 0.12H—0.17H √

Next, we will check the factor of safety against overturning about the toe. The FOS
against overturning is 4.62, which is greater than usual minimum criterion 1.5. To check the FOS
against sliding which is 2.41, it is greater than the minimum factor of safety of 1.5. The ultimate
of bearing capacity of the soil can be calculated which is q(u)=11006.3 lb/ft², also the maximum
toe pressure occur at the ends of the toe can be calculated which is q(toe)=3494.25 lb/ft². So we
can find the FOS against bearing capacity failure is 3.15, which is greater than minimum
requirement of 3.0.

Now, we can conclude that the designed gravity retaining wall dimensions and stability
meet the design requirement. The calculation process and detail can be found in the attachment.
