Must Do Bulletin

Originator: Sridharan Vaithianathan Bulletin#:1448

Date: July 8, 2015 InTouch Content ID#: 6642706

CPS-361, CPS-679, CPS-763 Displacement Tank Calibration (for BP only)

Aim of Bulletin:

Following a request by our client BP, this must-do bulletin requires only the (9) CPS units working for BP
to install a new barrel marker and perform recalibration of the displacement tanks (2x10 BBL). This MB is
applicable for units currently operating or will operate in the near future for British Petroleum only. No
other units require any action on this Must Do.

Safety Considerations: Follow all applicable QHSE standards

Schlumberger Private
Compliance Reporting: All work performed on equipment for this Bulletin must be recorded as a Work Order in Maximo.
The work order campaign for this bulletin is Must-Do MB1448 Displacement Tank Calibration-BP.
Compliance can be found in the Maximo program in the SLB MB Compliance Detail report. Access
the report in the program by following the menus: Reports>Work Orders>SLB Campaigns.

Maximo Equipment Assignment of this MB to the affected equipment will be done WSHQ.

Implementation Deadline:

30-October, 2015

Responsibility: It is Line Management’s responsibility to ensure that this Must-Do bulletin is effectively
implemented.

Description:

In cement pumper skids previously produced in Singapore, the barrel markers in the displacement tanks
(2x10 BBL) are not always tested and verified to be accurate to within 1-2%. At the request of BP, newly
designed barrel markers have been developed which can be calibrated using a volumetric flow meter. ID
plates with volume and accuracy details are then to be installed on the displacement tank.

Note: For all production from the US (and all future production from Singapore), the displacement tanks
are calibrated tested, and labeled during manufacture.

Corrective Action:

Order the required parts from SWPS. All the remote control (RC) units will have the volumetric meter
assembly (shown in Figure 1) included in the unit package. If your rig/location already has this volume
meter, then you are not required to order “Item 1”. However item 2 and 3 are mandatory for each unit.

After receiving the parts required, follow the instructions below to calibrate the displacement tank.

Schlumberger Private
Calibration setup:

Step 1: Mount the new barrel markers on to the displacement tank.

Step 2: Ensure that the displacement tank is levelled, using a level gauge.

Step 3: Drain the left and right displacement tanks simultaneously by opening the drain valves and also
the suction valves.

Step 4: Mount the volumetric meter on the displacement tank using the mounting bracket, as shown in
Figure 2.

Step 5: Connect the inlet line of the volumetric meter to a water supply, usually a 1” water hose line.

Page: 3 of 6

Step 6: Open the volumetric meter and let water flow through it into the tank.

Step 7: Check for any leaks in the suction side of the volumetric meter. Any leaks will induce air
bubbles into the volumetric meter which might affect the accuracy of the meter. Ensure the
water flow is steady without any air bubbles. Correct any leaks before proceeding. As a best
practice, only open the 1” supply line valve about half way to achieve a steady flow. A low and
steady flow rate will give the most accurate metering.

Step 8: After the setup procedure is complete, close the volumetric meter and stop the water flow.
Ensure the displacement tanks are fully drained and empty.

Calibration Process:

Step 9: Close both the left and right drain lines and suction lines of the displacement tanks. If not
closed, the water from one tank may escape to the other tank. This may result in inaccurate
level in the tank(s).

Step 10: Write down the initial reading of the volumetric meter. Since the volumetric meter does not have
a “reset” option, the initial reading from the volumetric meter will be the base while doing
calibration. In the rest of this procedure, this initial volume reading will be referred to as “X” m3.

Step 11: Open the volumetric meter (using the ball valve) and fill the displacement tank up to the level

“10” marker. Write down the reading of the volumetric meter. Stop filling when the water level
touches the bottom surface of the marker, as shown in Figure 3. Write down this volume as
“X10” m3.

level

Step 12: Next fill the water level up to Level marker “9” and note down the volumetric reading. This will
be X9.

Step 13: Repeat Step 12 for each barrel marker up to marker “1” while noting down the reading from the
volumetric meter. X8, X7, ….. X1. Each reading can be written down in Table 1.

Step 14: After filing up to the 1 barrel mark, stopping, and writing down the X1 volume, then fill the last
barrel (i.e. up to the “F” level) as follows:
 Calculate the flowmeter reading for 10 barrels total (XF) by calculating XF = X10 + 1.589 m3
 Open the volumetric meter and flow water until the meter reads exactly the X F volume
calculated above.
 Stop immediately when you reach XF. Note, do not attempt to use the adjustable “Full”
marker, since it has not yet been properly positioned.

Step 15: Once the displacement tank is filled with exactly 10 barrels, adjust the movable “F” level marker
to touch the water level and tighten the bolts.
