Procedures for Slick line Gas lift Operations.

Running and Pulling Gas Lift Valves

1.0 Scope
Many wells are produced using gas lift to lighten the fluid column. Slickline is often used to service (run
and pull) Gas Lift Valves (GLV’s) from these wells.

2.0 General Information

There are two different types of gas lift systems: continuous and intermittent.
Continuous-lift type systems inject gas continuously into the fluid column.
With intermittent gas lift the fluid column in the tubing is allowed to rise before gas is injected into the well.
Intermittent gas lift systems will include a standing valve set in the tubing below the lowest Side Pocket
Mandrel (SPM).
Caution must be used when performing Slickline runs into flowing wells, an unstable flow regime can
create slugging in the wellbore which can result in Slickline tools being blown up hole.
Important: Under no circumstances should Slickline tools be run into a flowing intermittent gas lift system
due to the violent flow regime created by this system.

GLVs have a check valve (back check) to prevent flow from tubing into the annulus.

A Kick-Over Tool (KOT) is required to run and pull gas lift valves from Side Pocket Mandrels (SPM’s).
Some SPM’s contain orientating slots or guides and some are non-orienting.
The orienting-type SPM has a key slot built into it that aligns the KOT with the GLV pocket to ease in
setting and pulling. It is primarily used in deviated wells.
Often flowing wells are completed with SPM’s loaded with dummy GLV’s. These are later replaced with
live GLV’s.

3.0 Procedure
1. Record the Flowing Tubing Head Pressure (FTHP) and Flowing Casing Head Pressure (FCHP).
Important Note: At all times when pressures are recorded it must be performed with a digital
pressure gauge or by using the same gauge to record both pressures. Faulty gauge readings
could result in pressure differential not being detected.

2. Close gas lift supply valve on the gas lift manifold up stream of Merla Choke (in order to allow
SCADA to continue recording casing pressure) and tag out the valve. The casing annulus wing
valve must remain open to record actual casing pressure. In the event that manifold valves are
passing, the casing annulus wing valve should be closed during operations but will need to be re
opened whenever pressures are recorded. Report fault to Field Engineer.

3. Shut in the Production wing valve and rig up the Slickline equipment.

4. Record the Shut in Tubing Head Pressure (SITHP) and Shut in Casing Head Pressure (SICHP).

5. RIH with appropriate sized gauge ring and drift the tubing clear to the maximum OD of the valve
catcher and the KOT’s to be run. Record the tubing fluid level during Slickline runs.

6. If the KOT does not have a catcher on the tray, set an appropriate valve catcher in the tubing
below the lowest SPM, ensure the valve catcher will either hold the dropped valve above the
catcher fish neck or is long enough to swallow the GLV and allow the catcher to be recovered with
the valve inside the catcher, including sufficient travel for the pulling tool core to enable shearing
of the pulling tool.

Important note: When using KOT with catcher trays always ensure that the correct spacers are used
to allow the pulled valve to retract back into the tray above the catcher.

7. Calculate the Bottom Hole Pressure (BHP) of both the tubing and casing at the deepest GLV to be
pulled.
Record SITHP and SICHP again.
Note: equalization should be based on BHP, not surface pressures. When pulling GLV’s the
tubing BHP must be equal to or greater than the casing BHP same depth. (use TVD depths only
and call Field Engineer if help is needed).

8. Equalize the tubing and casing by one of the following options.

A. Bleed down casing pressure via the sea line or jumper line to the sump tank.
B. Equalize pressure from the casing to tubing via jumper hose.
C. Inject gas into the tubing to SITHP greater than SICHP. This is the least desired method
as injecting gas into the tubing will force the fluid level down the tubing into the reservoir.
If this method is used the hydrostatic pressure for the tubing must be recalculated,
another Slickline run will be required to tag the fluid level.

9. After equalizing record SITHP and SICHP.

10. As determined in Slickline program, commence changing the GLV’s always starting with the
deepest valve.
A. Pull one / run one GLV from the bottom up.
B. Pull all GLV’s from the bottom up and run all GLV’s from the top down.

Select the correct KOT, extension, pulling tools and running tools from the GLV Running and
Pulling Tool Table (inserted below).
A knuckle joint should always be placed in the tool string above the KOT.
Note: Do not run 2 arm L-type KOT when running GLV’s into side pockets mandrels with
positioning sleeves. The arms may hang up in the positioning sleeves key slot.

11. Record GLV Test Rack Opening Pressure (TRO) engraved on the valve, confirm the SPM # and
depth are correctly engraved on the valve. (Note: Dummy valves are not commonly engraved).

Important Note: If the well is returned to production at any time before the job is completed,
hydrostatic BHP’s will need to be recalculated and pressure equalized before recommencing
Slickline work.

12. Pull the catcher sub.

13. Return the well to production

Calculations.

How to calculate bottom hole pressure.

BHP = Surface pressure + hydrostatic pressure.
Hydrostatic Pressure = Depth TVD ft x gradient in PSI per foot.

Rule of thumb – Malongo / Takula

Gas gradient .026 psi / ft
Fresh water .433 psi / ft
Produced water .467 psi / ft
Diesel & Crude oil .370 psi / ft

How to calculate fluid gradient if weight / gall of fluid is known

lb/gal x .052 = PSI / ft

How to calculate differential pressure.

Calculate BHP at the required depth in the tubing.
Calculate BHP at the required depth in the casing.

Determine the pressure differential and direction of flow from highest pressure to lowest pressure.

How to calculate TVD at any depth in the wellbore.

Information required from an existing deviation survey of the well.

Example
Deep MD – known depth below where you want to calculate. 4500’ md
Shallow MD – Know depth above where you want to calculate. 3500’ md
Deep TVD – corresponding to Deep MD. 3719’ tvd
Shallow TVD – corresponding to Shallow MD. 2997’ tvd
Depth MD you want to calculate TVD for. 4200’ md
Deep MD - Depth MD = A 4500’ md – 4200’ md - A = 300
Deep MD – Shallow MD = B 4500’ md – 3500‘ md - B = 1000
A divided by B = C 300/1000 – C= .3
Deep TVD – Shallow TVD = D 3719 – 2997 – D = 722
CxD=E .3 x 722 – E = 216.6
Deep TVD – E = TVD depth for 4000’ MD 3719 – 216.6 = 3502.4’ tvd @ 4200’ md

To calculate the well deviation between 2 known points.

Deep TVD – Shallow TVD / Deep MD – Shallow MD 4500 – 3500 / 3719 – 2997 = .722
Inverse of Cos .722 = Deviation Angle 43.78 Degrees

Assumption – well angle is constant between the 2 known points.
