Objective

Provide a clear, easy to read and to follow document that will guide rig crew personnel in performing
the daily well control checks. When completing the well control checklist daily, a level of confidence is
assured because the competency of the well control equipment can be verified.

The well control daily checklists should be:

 Performed every shift by a competent person.
 Verified and signed by the Toolpusher or Rig Manager.
 Acknowledged and signed by the Sonatrach Drilling Supervisor.
 Recorded daily on the OpenWells® DDR.

Workflow

The workflow below is suggested since it is the most efficient and effective path to complete the
checklist quickly and thoroughly.

Hydraulic Lines
Start Accumulator BOP’s Wellhead
& Suitcases

Mud Gas
Finish Rig Floor Drillers Cabin Choke Manifold
Separator

Note

This procedure is provided for general information and procedure guidance only and although every
rig is equipped differently the general components are the same. The photos in this document are a
generic representation and are not intended to represent each rig’s equipment exactly. Please refer
to the original OEM documentation.

Procedures

1. Manifold pressure
1500 psi.
2. Accumulator pressure
2700-3000psi.
3. Annular pressure
500-1500psi.

Initial ANNULAR closing pressure

depends on model and pressure
rating. See OEM manual.

 Cameron D/DL 1500psi.

 Shaffer Spherical 1500psi.
 Hydril GK/GL/GX 500-1100psi.

4. Air supply pressure 110-150psi.

5. Accumulator isolation valve(s)

are OPEN.

3|Page March 2021

6. Air supply valves to pumps are
OPEN.

This example shows the location of

the valves only and not correct
position of the valve handles.

7. Discharge/Suction pump valves

OPEN.

8. Active BOP Control Handles in

power position either Open or
Closed – not blocked. Active
BOP’s include Annular, Blind
Rams, Pipe Rams, HCR valves.

4|Page March 2021

9. Extra control handles not in use
are marked clearly.

10. Electric Pump switches in “Auto”

position.

11. Accumulator tank at least ½ full.

5|Page March 2021

12. Shear/Blind ram covers in place.

13. Are all hydraulic connections

leak free including BOP’s and
suitcases?II

14. Snub lines or chains installed on

the BOP.

6|Page March 2021

15. Hand wheels on ram locks.

16. Is the weep hole leaking on Ram

BOP's?

17. Fill up line connected to bell

nipple or RCD.

7|Page March 2021

18. Hand wheels installed on
Manual & Hydraulic valves.

19. Inner choke and kill line

(Manual) valves are OPEN.

20. Outer choke and kill line (HCR)

valves are CLOSED.

21. Choke manifold lined up for

“hard shut-in” against a valve
downstream from the choke.

22. Choke manifold discharge lined

up through Mud Gas Separator
“poor-boy” to shale shaker.

Example Only

23. Fig. 1502 hammer union

installed on side outlet valve on
each casing spool. One side
only.

24. Pressure gauges and needle
valves installed on side outlet
valves for each casing spool to
read annulus pressure.

25. Pressure reading on “A” Section

casing spool. (CHS)

26. Pressure reading on “B” Section

casing spool. (CHS)

27. Pressure reading on “C” Section

casing spool. (CHH)

28. Return Flow alarm set for ± 5%

Hi/Low at the Driller’s console.

29. PVT alarm set for ± 0.8 m3 or

± 5.0 bbls Gain/Loss at the
Driller’s console.

30. Full Opening Safety Valves on rig

floor for all sizes of DP in use.

31. Inside BOP on rig floor for largest

DP size in use.

32. Full Opening Safety Valve

wrench on rig floor.

33. Inside BOPs and Full Opening

Safety Valves in the OPEN
position on the rig floor.

34. Casing X-over made up to safety

valve. (when running casing or
tubing)
