Social Stratification

Structural-functionalism, social conflict and symbolic-interactionism are the main theoretical


approaches in Sociology.

1. What is social stratification according to the structural-functionalism, social conflict and symbolic
interactionism approach?

2. What are the reasons for the social positions according to the structural-functionalism, social
conflict and symbolic interactionism approach?

3. Provide examples of Karl Marx’s claim of social stratification using the social conflict approach.

4. Provide examples of Max Weber’s three distinct dimensions of social stratifications.

5. Provide explanation and examples of David Moore’s opinion of the social stratification found
within today’s society.

6. Provide two examples of the caste system.

7. What are the characteristics of the class system IN PRESENT DAY INDONESIA?

1. Global Stratification
Two theories (Modernization Theory and Dependency Theory) are portrayed and discussed in the
chapter to explain the causes of global stratification.

a. What are the differences between Modernization Theory and Dependency Theory?

b. What are your critiques towards Modernization Theory and Dependency Theory?
Provide examples to strengthen your critiques!

2. The Economy and Work


Economic Systems (paths to justice) can be categorized into capitalism, socialism, welfare capitalism
and state capitalism.

a. Analyze ALL of the above economic systems by discussing the forms of ownership they adopt, the
forms of government interventions they incorporate, the levels of productivity they generate, the
resulting standards of living they derive, the income inequalities they perpetuate and the freedom
they offer to their citizens.

b. What do modernization theorists and dependency theorists say about multinational corporations
and (in) equalities in the global economy? Do you agree with the modernization theorists or the
dependency theorists? Why?

3. Politics and Government


Political systems in global perspective can be categorized into democracy, monarchy,
authoritarianism and totalitarianism.

a. Provide examples for ALL of the above political systems, taking into account the forms of
authority their political leader display, the sources which legitimize their power and authority, the
methods by which the citizens are ruled, the political spectrum which they encompass, the social
transformations which are likely to take place, and the vehicles available for social transformations.

b. How do C Wright Mills and Karl Marx imagine power in society? What do you think about their
analyses of power in society? Do they reflect your society? Why or why not?

4. Traditional, Modern and Postmodern Societies


Certainly you have experienced social change during your lifetime in the city which you live in.
Choose a medium or large size city which you are very familiar with and do the following:

a. Provide examples of gesellschaft and organic solidarity you experienced in the city you chose.

b. How would Max Weber perceive the life in the city which you chose? (please discuss it in relation
to the dehumanizing effects of modern rationality, capitalism, social conflict and social change)

c. How would Karl Marx perceive the life in the city which you chose? (please discuss it in relation
to the dehumanizing effects of modern rationality, capitalism, social conflict and social change)

d. Provide examples of problems of identity and problems of powerlessness in that city.

5. Education
Structural-functionalism, social conflict and symbolic-interactionism are the main theoretical
approaches in Sociology.

a. What is schooling and its implications (effects) according to the structural-functionalism, social
conflict and symbolic interactionism approach?
b. How are problems in schools similar or different when comparing schooling in advanced and
developing countries? Why?

6. Population and Environment


Population and the environment has become one of our foci in the class due to the rate of
uncontrollable population growth capable of leading to social and environmental challenges.
a) Discuss the factors which can cause the dynamics in population within a certain region
and explain their causes and effects.

b) What would you do to ensure a fairer land use within the city landscape?
