Reflection:

This semester, English Writing and Rhetoric has taught me many new things like
how to probably use Citations in an article, APA format, how to analyze and summarize
the articles properly, time management, and in general made my understanding for how
I write and think to be better and more specific. This is my first actual English Writing and
Rhetoric class since before covid which made it a lot harder to get in the groove and
remember the techniques of writing. There are two pieces of writing that we worked on
this semester that tremendously helped me. The first piece of work we did was a
Synthesis Essay over Concept two of “Naming what we know”. As a group we then
worked on a Literature Review with a science based topic of our choice.
The first piece of writing that was assigned to me in English Writing and Rhetoric
was the Synthesis Project/Essay. The purpose of this essay was to write about a
concept from the book of “Naming what we know” which we had to use 5 sources then
use APA format for citations and in text citations. This assignment taught me how to do
in text citations and APA format, it also introduced me to what a synthesis essay is and
how it is correctly written. When writing this essay I definitely had some doubts and did
not do the best. I also waited until the last minute to finish it which taught me real quickly
that writing informative essays tend to be more precise and take time. After reading
what I had done wrong, I had a way better understanding of how to write a synthesis
essay.
The second piece of writing I was assigned was my group Literature review. This
assignment was a paper of our topic choice of any science base topic using 12 peer
reviewed articles. Working in a group definitely helped me understand the work more
clearly and it came in handy to be able to ask my group questions when I was unsure of
something. We also got this done in a timely manner and had time to be able to make
corrections to make our grade higher. This taught me that using your resources and
asking questions when you do not completely understand is good. I also learned the
difference between a peer reviewed article and how it is different from just a regular
website, and how when you prepare more and give yourself more time to work on the
essay your work is a lot better.
In conclusion, English Writing and Rhetoric has taught me many different things
to help me achieve my goals this first semester of becoming a better and more
informative writer. As well as teaching me that time management plays a big role in the
outcome of how you write. I will use all these skills in my future classes and in my future
career.
