Title: … Second Grade Math Collaboration Lesson

Relevant SC Standards: …

2.NSBT.1 Understand place value through 999 by demonstrating that: a. 100 can be thought of
as a bundle (group) of 10 tens called a “hundred”; b. the hundreds digit in a three-digit number
represents the number of hundreds, the tens digit represents the number of tens, and the ones
digit represents the number of ones; c. three-digit numbers can be decomposed in multiple ways
(e.g., 524 can be decomposed as 5 hundreds, 2 tens and 4 ones or 4 hundreds, 12 tens, and 4
ones, etc.).

2.NSBT.2 Count by tens and hundreds to 1,000 starting with any number.

2.NSBT.3 Read, write and represent numbers through 999 using concrete models, standard
form, and equations in expanded form.

2.NSBT.4 Compare two numbers with up to three digits using words and symbols (i.e., >, =, or
<).

2.NSBT.5 Add and subtract fluently through 99 using knowledge of place value and properties
of operations.

2.NSBT.6 Add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on knowledge of place value
and properties of operations.

2.NSBT.7 Add and subtract through 999 using concrete models, drawings, and symbols which
convey strategies connected to place value understanding.

Description: During this lesson that is provided for students at the second grade mathematical
level, they will use digital technology in order to practice the standards given by the state of
South Carolina. Students will be able to create a diagram, infographic or poster as well as a video
of themselves showing how they would solve a mathematical problem. This lesson will provide a
fun and engaging way for students to practice and participate in solving mathematical problems
based on the state standards of their grade level.

Instructional Objective: Students will be able to identify numbers between one and one
thousand as well as practice counting by tens and hundreds. Students will also solve subtraction
and addition questions up to the number 999 and differentiate between numbers using greater
than as well as lesser than symbols. Students will be able to strategize to solve mathematical
problems regarding these ideals and use digital technology through apps that will allow each
student to practice their mathematical skills while using technology that allows them to further
their understanding of the standards given to them while also enjoying their participation in
class and have the largest takeaway from the lesson and content as possible.

Step 1: Educreations Whiteboard: Students will use the Educreations Whiteboard

to show a model of how they would subtract a two digit number from a three digit
number and add a four digit number to any number of their choosing that is larger
than 10. This will allow students to study the place values of the number that they
chose when they are designing and setting up their math problem. Students will
show the teacher and submit their whiteboard in order to create a solid artifact
from this assignment.

Step 2: ThingLink: Students will make a project using the timeline feature that is
provided within the app. Students will use the timeline to start at 10 and increase
the number on the time by ten each time. This will allow for students to create a
project that includes the topic of counting by tens. Students will also include an
image in their timeline that displays the ideas of greater than and equal to. They
will make three images to attach to the area of the timeline that shows three sets of
problems that include a greater than and lesser than problem. To do this, they will
only use the problems that are shown on the timeline. Students would submit a
screenshot of this assignment to create the artifact for the teacher to see the the
progress the students are making.

Step 3: IMovie: Students will be able to create a movie focused on a subject of their
choosing that is stated within the standards. For example, they could choose
counting by tens, subtraction or greater than and less than problems. They would
be required to record four separate clips of themselves explaining how they would
solve two different mathematical problems. This will allow for the students to
practice the skills that they feel they need the most practice on. Students will
submit their videos of the two math problems that they have created and chosen to
solve.
