Reform and Revolution
Crisostomo Ibarra is the one who
wants reformation because he was
planning to open a school for the
town’s people awareness to the
friar’s wrongdoings.
Crisostomo Ibarra also wants to
address the corruption of the friars,
and that’s the reason why Padre
Damaso wants him to be arrested.
Elias, on the other hand, is a
member of the revolutionary group
in the town of San Diego. He wants
to stop the abuses of the Frias and
the Spanish Government among
his fellow countrymen.

Padre Damaso is against to
Ibarra’s plan to open a school in
San Diego because he was afraid
of town’s people becoming liberate
from the church’s authority.
Educational System during the

Philippines is limited to Spanish or
rich Filipinos who can afford to pay
for the matriculas.
Padre Damaso is restraining
school master’s to teach Spanish
to Indios, which might make them
understand the context of the
Church’s corruptions.
