Measuring anti-freeze content

Calibration of tool 588 572

1. Switch on the gauge. It has to be switched on


for at least 5 minutes before calibrating.

2. Pour out a little Calibration fluid 588 573


into a mug or similar receptacle.

3. Remove the cover from the probe electrodes.

4. Clean the probe electrodes with distilled
water or denatured alcohol. Wipe off the
electrodes.

5. Place the storage box in an upright position


and place the gauge 588 572 in the box
brackets.

6. Place the container with calibration fluid


under Corrosion inhibitor gauge 588 572 so
that each probe electrode is covered in
calibration fluid.

7. Turn the gauge so that the fluid is agitated
and read the measurement in the gauge
display window.
The reading should be 13.50 mS / cm. The
conductivity of Calibration fluid 588 573 is
12.88 mS / cm. The gauge is adjusted to 13.50
to provide a better measurement range.

8. If the value is not 13.50 mS / cm, unscrew the


cover on the top of gauge 588 572.

9. Calibrate 588 572 using the potentiometer


screw. The reading should be 13.50 mS / cm.
Some models may have two buttons to
calibrate the value up or down.

Important! Turn the gauge so that the cali-


bration fluid is agitated after each
adjustment of the reading.

10. Wait for the reading to stabilise.
• Check that the reading in the gauge display
window is 13.50 mS.
• If the value is incorrect, the gauge must be
recalibrated starting from step 9.

now calibrated and ready to check the content
of corrosion inhibitor in the coolant.

Measuring corrosion inhibitor

! WARNING!

Hot coolant can cause burns. Wear


protective gloves.
Scania corrosion inhibitor is dangerous if
ingested.

Important! A mixture of different corrosion


inhibitors could result in an accumulation
of sludge and poorer protection against
corrosion.

1. Extract some coolant from the expansion


tank and pour it into a mug or similar
receptacle.
2. Switch on Corrosion inhibitor gauge
588 572. It has to be switched on for at least
5 minutes before measuring.
3. Allow the coolant to cool down to 20 - 30°C.

4. Remove the protection cover from the probe
electrodes on Corrosion inhibitor gauge
588 572.

5. Clean the probe electrodes with distilled


water and denatured alcohol. Wipe off the
electrodes.

6. When checking different coolants, rinse the


probe electrodes in distilled water and
denatured alcohol before each measurement.
7. Place the gauge in the upright container.

8. Place a mug or similar container with coolant
under the gauge and dip the probe electrodes
completely in the coolant.

9. Wait a couple of minutes for the value in the


gauge display window to stabilise.
10. Read and note the value.

11. Check the level of corrosion inhibitor in the


diagram. Refer to the Corrosion inhibitor
diagram on the next page.
12. The corrosion inhibitor content in the coolant
must be 8-12% by volume. The normal
content is 10% by volume.
13. After use the gauge should be cleaned in
distilled water and denatured alcohol.
14. Do not forget to fit the protection cover and
switch off the gauge.

Corrosion inhibitor diagram

- After measuring the conductivity value using

current corrosion protection in percent by
volume as a function of the measured
conductivity value in mS in the diagram below.
- The corrosion protection should be 8-12% by
volume which is equivalent to the range
between min and max in the diagram. A
normal corrosion inhibitor content in the
coolant is 10% by volume.
