other coloring materials

III. LEARN

Some nail diseases are contagious to the next client who is going to use the
same tools and equipment. Indeed, it is vital for beauty care therapists to
decontaminate tools and equipment in prevention of cross infection. In addition, the
salon or work environment must be always clean and germ free in order to provide
safe, quality, and professional nail care services.

Hygiene is defined as conditions or practices conducive to maintaining health and

preventing disease, especially through cleanliness. Everybody in the beauty care
industry must practice good hygiene and sanitation all the times. This is possible
through decontamination of the tools and equipment used in manicure and
pedicure.

Decontamination is the procedure of removal of all disease-causing

pathogens on tools and equipment for another usage. There are three ways to
decontaminate and clean the salon environment. These are Sanitation,
Disinfection, and Sterilization.

What is Sanitation?
2|Page

Sanitation is referred to the lowest level of

decontamination and cleaning. The methods of
sanitation include wiping, washing, sweeping,
or

dusting on tools and surfaces. The purpose of sanitation is to remove the bacteria
and germs on tools, surfaces, and equipment before disinfection and sterilization.
However, sanitized tools and surfaces may still have pathogens and other
microorganisms on them.

There are two ways to sanitize the clients’ hands before manicure procedure:

1. Washing the hands. Washing is the best way to sanitize and clean the
hands with soap and warm water. However, make sure that the towel for drying is
also sanitized and disinfected. Avoid reusing towel to different clients. One towel
must be used per client. Moreover, it is better to use liquid soap in a pump-action
bottle than the bar soaps to avoid being contaminated with bacteria that can even
grow on it.

2. Using Antiseptic. An antiseptic is a chemical that inhibits the growth of

bacteria. You may use antiseptic to cleanse the skin before executing
manicure/pedicure. Present of wounds near the nail area, may also be sanitized
using antiseptic to prevent the wound for being septic. Antiseptic may come in the
form of crystals, liquids, stick and powders.

Preparation of Equipment to be Sanitized

a. Read carefully the directions on disinfectant found in its container.
b. Measure and mix disinfectant as directed.
c. Use cloth with disinfectant solution and wipe entire surface area of
equipment.
d. Dry the surface by wiping with paper towels.
e. Dispose of sanitizing solution and used towels properly.

Preparation of the Sanitizing Jar

a. Cleanse sanitizing jar with disinfectant.
b. Put thin layer of sterile cotton at the bottom of jar.
c. Remove implements from wet or dry sanitizer and place them into the jar,
handles up, except for metal nail files.
d. Fill jar with 70% to 90% alcohol solution to cover cutting edges and tips of
orangewood sticks.

Disinfection is the second

What is Disinfection ? level of decontamination. This involves
chemical process that kills most of the bacteria
and germs on tools,
surfaces, and equipment. A disinfectant is a
substance used to control micro-organisms on non-living surfaces such as tools,
equipment, and furniture/ fixtures.

A high quality of disinfectant is a fast-acting eliminator of most pathogenic

bacteria.

Disinfection is the most used form of decontamination in salons.

An effective disinfectant possesses the following characteristics:

• Convenient to Prepare
• Fast-Acting
• Odorless
• Non-Corrosive
• Economical
• Non-irritating to the skin

The most commonly used disinfectants are:

Sodium Hypochlorite Alcohol Quaternary

Ammonium Compounds (Household bleach)
(QUATS)

How to use the Disinfectants?

Disinfectants are chemicals which kills most (not all) bacteria and viruses.
Disinfectant solution is wiped on salon surfaces, trolleys, and equipment for
reduction of germs and bacteria growth. Any item or supplies used on clients

should be disinfected after use or thrown away (if disposable). For example, of
disposable supplies are orange sticks, cottons, tissue, and the likes.

Here are the steps in Disinfection:

• Put your nail clippers, glass nail files and callus removing tool into a
clean bowl
• Using the Isopropyl Alcohol, cover your tools completely.
• Allow them to soak in the solution for 30 minutes. If you do not have
Isopropyl Alcohol, you can boil your metal tools in water for 20
minutes.
• Be sure to wash your hands before picking up the disinfected tools.
• When soaking is complete, allow them to dry on a clean paper towel.

Tools Method of Disinfection

Pre-clean by Washing
Remove Debris, Wash with hot water and liquid soap.

Nail Brushes

Nippers, Scissors, Small

Tools
Remove Debris and place in container submerged in
disinfectant solution.
You must be very careful when using these chemicals
as they can harm your skin if it is touched.

Towels

Use one towel per client then machine wash after use.
Use household bleach for washing.

Electrical Equipment Never get the electrical equipment wet.

Spray and wipe the surface of electrical equipment
with disinfectant.
Work Surfaces Wipe with clean cloth and disinfectant regularly.

Sterilization is the highest level of

What is Sterilization ? decontamination. In this process, all
microorganisms on objects are completely
eliminated. Sterilization is used for tools and
equipment. The nail care tools are placed in a
container at very high temperature to
completely remove all germs and bacteria.
Only hard, non-porous tools and equipment
can be sterilized. Only metal tools can be
sterilized like nippers, scissors, and tweezers.
But plastic and wooden tools can only be
disinfected.

Equipment used for Sterilization

Equipment Method of Sterilization

Autoclave machine

An autoclave machine heats water to 121 - 134°C

under high pressure. It is the most common form and
effective method of sterilization in the salon.

Glass Bead Sterilizer

The glass bead sterilizer is a small electrically-heated

unit which contains glass beads. The beads are
heated and the heat is transferred to objects placed
inside the unit. It is only really suitable for small
objects like nippers and scissors.

Ultra-Violet Light Cabinet It is a special cabinet which contains a lamp which

gives off ultra-violet light. The rays of light destroy
micro-organisms. Not all micro-organisms are
destroyed so the ultra-violet cabinet is best used for
storing equipment which has previously been
sterilized by the autoclave or disinfected by chemical
method.

Preparation of Metals Tools for Sterilization

a. Soak the tools in hot, soapy water solution to remove any debris and oil
residue. Rinse them thoroughly.
b. Place the tools in a 70% to 90% alcohol solution for 20-30 minutes.
c. Remove the tools from the solution.
d. Dry the surface and place it in a sterilizing equipment.

Proper Waste Disposal

It is important that waste matter is disposed of correctly in the salon. The
trash bins used in salon are self-closed lid. Beauty care therapists must practice
proper waste segregation. Sharp items must be disposed in a separate trash bin to
avoid injuries. Empty chemical containers should be wrapped in plastic before
putting them in the dustbin to ensure there are no leakages.

The salon must adapt the concept of “green and sustainable environment”.
This pertains to the 3Rs: Reduce, reuse, and recycle. You can do these by
reducing products used

in the salon, for example, measure correct quantities of product; separate waste,
such as plastics from glass and biodegradable materials; by using natural products;
and reducing the use of chemicals. Empty bottles and cans could be re-used for
storage of manicure implements, but ensure that the empty bottle and cans are not
container of harmful chemicals that might damage supplies in reusing. Separating
waste is an efficient way of identifying material that could be recycled, for example
plastic bags.
