MILLING MACHINE
NOVEMBER 4, 2022
JAMON, JAROLD PAUL

1. Two definitions/descriptions of a milling machine.

- A milling machine removes material from a work piece, and it uses a rotating
cutting tool that is inserted into a workpiece. Vertical or horizontal milling
machines are typically used to process flat and uneven surfaces can be used to
drill, bore, and cut into contoured surfaces threads, slots, and gears.

2. Types of milling machines.
- Horizontal or Plain Milling Machine
- Vertical Milling Machine
- Universal Milling Machine
- Simplex Milling Machine
- Duplex Milling Machine
- Triplex Milling Machine
- Rotary Table Milling Machine
- Tracer Controlled Milling Machine
- CNC (computer numerical control) Milling Machine
- Drum Milling Machine
- Turret Milling Machines
- C-Frame Milling Machines
- Tracer Controlled Milling Machines
- Bed Type Milling Machines
- Column Milling Machines
3. Parts of a typical milling machine and their functions. Include labeled picture.

a) Column and base

- Column and base provide supports for the other parts of a milling machine.
b) Knee
- It is a casting that supports the saddle and table. All gearing mechanism is enclosed
within the knee.
c) Saddle and Swivel Table
- The saddle is on the knee and supports the table. Saddle slides on horizontal dovetail
on the knee and dovetail are parallel to the axis of the spindle. Swivel table is
attached to the saddle that swiveled (revolved) horizontally in both directions.
d) Power and Feed Mechanism
- The power feed mechanism is in the knee. The vertical (up and down), transverse (in
and out), and longitudinal (left and right) feeds are all controlled by the power feed
mechanism.
e) Table
- It is a rectangular casting which is present on the top of the saddle.
f) Spindle
- It is the shaft that is used to hold and drives the cutting tools of the milling machine.
It is mounted on the bearings and has the support of the column.
g) Over Arm/ Overhanging Arm
- The overarm, which is located on the upper face of the column, is a horizontal beam.
It may be a single casting which slides on the dovetail ways present on the top face of
the column.
h) Arbor Support
- Arbor support is casting with a bearing that supports the outer end of a arbor. It also
helps to align the outer end of the arbor with the spindle. Arbor support prevents the
springing of the outer end of arbor in cutting operations.
i) Ram
- It is an overhanging arm in a vertical milling machine. The one end of the ram is
mounted on the top of the column and the milling head is attached to another.

4. Inventor of milling machine.
- The inventor of milling machine is Eli Whitney.

5. Operations done on milling machines.

a) Plain Milling Operation - Plain milling is performed to produce a plain, flat,

horizontal surface parallel to the axis of rotation of a plain milling cutter.
b) Face Milling Operation - This operation is performed by a face milling cutter rotated
about an axis perpendicular to the work surface
c) Side Milling Operation - The side milling is the operation of producing a flat vertical
surface on the side of a workpiece by using a side milling cutter.
d) Straddle Milling Operation - The straddle milling is commonly used to design a
square or hexagonal surfaces.
e) Angular Milling Operation - The angular milling is the operation of producing an
angular surface on a workpiece other than at right angles of the axis of the milling
machine spindle.
f) Gang Milling Operation - The gang milling is the operation of machining several
surfaces of a workpiece simultaneously by feeding the table against a number of
cutters having the same or different diameters mounted on the arbor of the machine.
g) Form Milling Operation - The form milling is the operation of producing the irregular
contour by using form cutters.
h) Profile Milling Operation - The profile milling is the operation of reproduction an
outline of a template or complex shape of a master dies on a workpiece.
i) End Milling Operation - The end milling is the operation of producing a flat surface
which may be vertical, horizontal or at an angle in reference to the table surface.
j) Saw Milling Operation - Saw-milling is the operation of producing narrow slots or
grooves on a workpiece by using a saw-milling cutter.
k) Milling Keyways, Grooves, and Slot/T-Slot - It is done by using a plain milling
cutter, a metal slitting saw, an end mill or by a side milling cutter. T-slot is
manufactured by using special types of cutters designed to give the required shape on
the workpiece.
l) Gear Milling - The gear cutting operation is performed in a milling machine by using
a form-relieved cutter. The cutter may be a cylindrical type or end mill type.
m) Helical Milling - The helical milling is the operation of producing helical flutes or
grooves around the periphery of a cylindrical or conical workpiece.
n) Cam Milling - The cam milling is the operation of producing cams in a milling
machine by the use of universal dividing head and a vertical milling attachment.
o) Thread Milling - The thread milling machine operations are used to produce threads
by using a single or multiple thread milling cutter. Thread milling operation is
performed in special thread milling machines to produce accurate threads in small or
large quantities.
