Milling machine:
Milling machine is another most important machine tool after the lathe
machine tool and drilling machine.
In this machine, a multipoint cutter is rotating against the workpiece and
material removed from the workpiece accordingly.
The milling is a process of metal-removing by feeding the workpiece passes
through the rotating multipoint cutter.

Milling machine parts:
A milling machine consists of the following parts:
•Base-carries the entire load .
•Column-supports the knee, table.
•Knee-supports the saddle and table.
•Saddle-provides motion in a horizontal direction to the
workpiece.
•Table-creates the base for the work to be performed.
•Overhanging Arm- used to fastened arbor support.
•Spindle-Job is attached to it.
•Arbor-used as an extension part of the spindle.
•Arbor Supports-used in horizontal types of milling machine.
•Milling Head-creates the drive.
•Ram-initiates and maintains the cutting of the job.
Parts of milling machine
Milling cutter fixing process:
i)Horizontal milling machine:
Here the spindle is in horizontal position and is supported the arbor. Spindle carries t
tool and has a hole similar to the milling cutter.

Vertical milling machine:
Here the spindle is in vertical position and the milling cutter is
inserted to it.

Milling operations:
i)Plain milling:
Plain milling is performed to produce a plain,
flat, horizontal surface parallel to the axis of
rotation of a plain milling cutter.

ii)Face milling:
This operation is performed by a face milling cutter
rotated about an axis perpendicular to the work
surface.
iii) Straddle Milling :
The straddle milling is the operation of producing a
flat vertical surface on both sides of a workpiece by
using two side milling cutters mounted on the same
arbor.

iv)Angular Milling:
The angular milling is the operation of
producing an angular surface on a
workpiece other than at right angles of
the axis of the milling machine spindle.
v)Gang Milling:
The gang milling is the operation of
machining several surfaces of a workpiece
simultaneously by feeding the table against a
number of cutters having the same or
different diameters mounted on the arbor of
the machine.

vi)Form Milling:
The form milling is the operation of
producing the irregular contour by using form
cutters.

Chemical milling:
Chemical milling or industrial etching is
the subtractive manufacturing process of using baths
of temperature-regulated etching chemicals to
remove material to create an object with the desired
shape.Other names for chemical etching include
photo etching, chemical etching, photo chemical
etching and photochemical machining. It is mostly
used on metals, though other materials are
increasingly important.
